Nice find, thanks for posting!

The video only mentioned the effects on slowing traffic while making turns--it didn't even touch on the other advantages for pedestrians and limiting illegal parking into the crosswalk.

Too bad we'll never see any sort of pedestrian-friendly improvements in JC.

They shoveled snow around the crosswalk buttons so that we cannot reach it. Now, we will never get the walk signal to cross the street.

The crosswalk at Columbus and Varick/Coles gets better. Walking by daily I've realized that anyone trying to cross Columbus ONLY gets the crosswalk signal to work if they hit the button AND there must be cars on Coles waiting to head south onto Varick. They must have a sensor to detect cars waiting. Specifically I've walked to the intersection and pushed the crosswalk button - After a bit the crosswalk machine for East/West Columbus will start its countdown making me think I'll be able to cross Columbus momentarily. But a funny thing happens if there are no cars waiting to cross Columbus; the light doesn't change. In other words the whole system is geared for drivers to get in/out of NYC via Columbus with no regard for JC resident pedestrians.

I cannot explain how frustrating it is to have to wait multiple light cycles to cross Columbus with a toddler in tow. What is also amazing is that while the light at Varick will stay green for a double cycle, the light at Jersey does turn red. So for anyone crossing Columbus, your odds of getting a proper crosswalk signal are much higher at Jersey Ave.

I've emailed Fulop's office and received no reply. If others are amazed by this display of disregard for resident pedestrians I encourage you to email Fulop or your local council person...

Heads should roll over this debacle.

Everyone who approved this should face imprisonment or banishment.

My biggest issue is with the new light on the southeast corner of Jersey Ave and Columbus right next to Carolinas Laundry. What geniuses in the planning, engineering, and/or contracting approved putting the new light right at the top of the grade of the sidewalk? I know walking with a stroller is pain with this new setup, but at least I can maneuver around it. I can't imagine how difficult it would be if one was in a wheelchair.

I must say, I am truly sickened and disgusted by the money wasting and corruption that is Jersey City.

You are right, it is stamped asphalt, not stamped concrete.

What they might be planning to do on the corner is use the system that heats up existing asphalt so that it becomes soft enough to imprint a pattern (and I suppose dye?). I've never worked with asphalt aside from small patch jobs, but I'm familiar with the system that works in that fashion.

So I wonder how close the new color will match the old?

Really they should do away with the stamped asphalt on the eastern side of Grove. Honestly, even plain concrete looks much better and is more durable.

I assumed that it was temporary.
And I don't think that walk is brick, but stamped asphalt. I think it was there that I watched workers rolling the brick pattern into the asphalt with a wire grid.

Well, the asphalt comes flush with the existing (ugly) stamped concrete sidewalks, so if brick were to be placed there, then the new surface would be 2-3 inches higher than the old sidewalk, creating a trip hazard.

Not to mention that asphalt is never used as a base for brick.

I dont really pay attention to those crosswalk lights anywhere. I just look to see if the light for oncoming traffic is red. If it is then I walk. If it turns green halfway through then I speed up my crossing. As a driver my pet peeve is people taking their sweet time crossing the street when clearly my light is green. Sometimes I feel people purposely walk slow and take their time and have a look on their face like "you're not rushing me, I do what I want!".

What's weirder is that they just put in the new sidewalks with that red rubber mat stuff at the crosswalks, and then they put the new poles/bases right in front of it. I don't think someone in a wheelchair would have any way of wheeling up the ramp and then around the pole. It's really dumb.

At least part of the reason for the widening of Columbus may be to serve as an emergency evacuation route for the city in the event of a hurricane or other hazard. I know the Hudson County evacuation plan calls for all six lanes of Columbus to be routed west.

I found this quote from New Yorks Sixth:

"The city insists adding a lane of traffic is not an expansion but merely a cosmetic streetscape project"

What a disgrace!

Oy, I've been caught in the middle of Columbus Drive when the lights change too. It's scary. The push-button signals are just stupid. They're not effective. I wish they'd make automobile drivers have to press a button and wait a cycle or two for a green light.

Another bad one is Coles and Newark. The ped signal goes from solid "WALK" to a flashing "WALK" (when it should be flashing "DON'T WALK). Then it goes to solid "DON'T WALK." I've walked out into the intersection seeing "WALK" flashing there and then suddenly it goes solid "DON'T WALK" and the traffic signals change. It doesn't make sense. Who made that "ooops"?

It is incredibly infuriating that, in a time when cities are going greener and placing emphasis on PEDESTRIANS, Jersey City goes in the opposite direction and turns Grand Street and Columbus Drive into super highways.

Really. It's bewildering, the kind of planning that goes on here. Who approves this stuff?

I wouldn't mind, but it's not as if Grand Street and Columbus Drive are bumper to bumper traffic in the mornings and evenings.

Its not just those lights, its the one on Grand and Warren, Montgomery and Warren. Its a joke. And NOBODY realizes it either and yes, somebody is going to get hit.

The drives in the city are rude, stupid, and oblivious to the LAW that says pedestrians have right of way, even if they have a red....

I walk north on Varick daily and cross Columbus. With this new set up, the crosswalk signal does not work if you get to the intersection after the light has changed. Thus you have no way of knowing whether you can safely cross Columbus or not. It's ridiculous, NYC has crosswalks that actually add value 100% of the time. These new ones only help you if you are there before the light changes AND push the button.

Am I missing something here?

I'll forward the situation to Fulop's office and see if there is a chance of getting this right. It seems that it's simply a software fix.

Downtown is a very pedestrian unfriendly area and couple that with the maniac drivers on Columbus (and its questionable condition to even be driving on) for a dangerous scenario...

Isn't it obvious? The city planners are stuck in a 1950's urban planning mentality where cars are king and pedestrians are annoyances.

This is a real pet peeve of mine. All pedestrian signals should be automatic, especially newly installed ones. Around here, some are and some are not. Perhaps Steve Fulop can shed a light on this?
