I think the crooks being afraid of being mauled by a dog is a nice deterrent...

I totally agree. Froto is amazing. Every time I read about him I start to worry that something bad is going to happen to him. He deserves a vacation.

Jersey City police dog Froto chased down and bit the thigh of a Newark felon stopped in a stolen car, officials said.
A Newark felon stopped in a stolen car by Jersey City police punched K-9 Froto as he tried to flee the stolen vehicle, but the police dog chased him down and clamped his jaws on the man's thigh, officials said.

Terence Nelson, 24, was arrested at 1:43 a.m. yesterday on Armstrong Avenue and charged with causing injury to a law enforcement animal, resisting arrest, receiving stolen property and possession of burglary tools, reports said.

Officer Louis Mecka spotted the stolen Volkswagen, and as backup arrived, the Volkswagen got stuck in traffic behind a garbage truck, reports said.

Mecka and Froto approached the Volkswagen and Mecka ordered Nelson out of the vehicle, saying "I have a trained police dog. If you resist, he will bite you," reports said.

Nelson began punching and swatting at Froto and finally punched the dog hard enough to back the dog up and create enough room for him to run away, reports said.

That's when Mecka released Froto and the dog knocked Nelson to the ground, where he continued to resist until he was handcuffed, reports said.

The ex-con was taken to the Jersey City Medical Center for treatment of puncture wounds to his leg, reports said.

Nelson was in state prison from Aug. 8, 2008 to Feb. 4, 2009 for burglary, corrections records say.

This police K-9 is my hero. Week after week he finds his way into the paper. I know he is German, but it would be nice if he could be the Grand Marshal for the Saint Patrick's Day Parade. Instead of some political crony.
