I had the fortune to be in a cab that broke down in the tunnel. The tow truck basically came up behind us and shunted us out of the tunnel and left on to Marin. I think the no left is to not only to reduce gridlock, but to keep the the exit from the tunnel to Marin as an emergency lane.

Lucky I lived at the Lincoln apts at the time, so I paid my fare, got out and walked the 2 blocks home:)

Could it be they're afraid of the turning traffic (stalled by that gridlock the PA won't touch) backing up to clog the tunnel exit back to where it's only 2 lanes?

Sometimes traffic regs are just not about any logic and reason available to us. Decades ago I got a ticket for making a right from 7th Ave onto 25th St, both a 1 way. The cop waiting for someone to do it had no explanation for it as he wrote me the summons.

that's completely irrelevant. You can still drive on that road in that direction if you are coming from sayyyy A&P. You just can't turn left out of the tunnel. So it's got nothing to do with preventing people from crashing into cars swerving around the people blocking the box.

Does this actually make sense to anybody? Or are JC officials on drugs?

It only makes sense when they choose not to enforce the "box" at the light on 12th street. Traffic going into the tunnel blocks the intersection so traffic trying to go straight toward 14th has to swerve into oncoming traffic. If someone takes the left out of the tunnel there is the potential for a head on at the 12th st light. The real solution should be to enforce the box not the left on to Marin, for all the reasons you mention.

Yeah - I recently noticed that huge sign. Not sure if it has been there forever or not, but the big huge sign is new. I also have always turned there (for 8 years I've been in JC) I'd say it's new within last 3 months or so.

Last week I got pulled over for turning left onto Marin. I have lived in JC for 3 years and have never been pulled over for doing this. Can someone please tell me when these no left turn signs were installed? The cop told me they had been there forever.

Thanks

Back to the topic, each time I have come that way this week I have seen no less than five cars per green light take the left anyway. No enforcement= another "pretend" law.

That's what is so advantageous in turning on jersey, the light for the turn to Coles is always on except when traffic is going straight, so one can always opt for one or the other.

If you're talking about the light to turn right onto the road (12th st?) that leads to the Coles underpass, I don't know if it's ever red. There seems to be a green arrow for right turns all the time.

I also noted traffic backed up on Manila which narrows to a single lane with a stop sign just south of the tunnel. Idiocy. I'm going to Jersey Ave.

BTW--When heading south on Jersey, do you find it is faster to turn right and use the Coles underpass than it is to wait for the light on Jersey?

I came through the Holland Tunnel today (1:00pm) and took a left on Manila/Grove as I often do to get to HP and it was packed with cars. Manila was gridlocked up to the Burger King. In general there was very little traffic, but the PA has managed create it... Job well done.

So the left onto Marin is now going to be blocked off, 24-7?

They close off this turn on the weekends all the time. it is a pain the ass but it is not a big deal. I rarely see anyone turn down that street from the tunnel anyways.

I think they are making it illegal to turn there because of the traffic back up it can create. all the people going into the tunnel block the box and then when there is traffic on marin people coming from the north on marin block the box.

that is how i have always interpreted it. it is closed 90% of the time on the weekends anyways.

My guess would be that people in the right lane cutting across the second the double yellow Holland Tunnel lines break to get to Marin makes the coppers nervous.

Conversely, all the extra traffic on Manila is going to make it absolutely unlivable.

I can't think of any way this could possibly be any worse, nor can I think of anyway to fix it short of blocking turns to both Manila and Marin and forcing the traffic into some sort of rotary that would loop them back into Marin, leaving Manila gloriously free of any traffic, at which point it could be converted into an open-air pedestrian friendly market.

Actually, the rotary would be great.

I doubt that its the city's decision.

Starting Friday.

Why not? Does directing that traffic to Grove/Manilla make sense?
