Thanks Pebble, I'd been by around 3pm both times and ended up at Astor for a fast one. Hopefully they'll expand their hours in the future.

They open about 5 pm until about 2 am on weekdays. On weekends they open earlier, maybe 2 or 3 pm.

I think you'd like the spot. It's very relaxed. I spent a lot of time talking with the owner on Friday and he seems like a good guy.

Yo thirstyquaker, how is the quality of their tap system? Do beers taste like they clean the lines frequently...did the beer have that fresh taste with good carbonation? I ask this because all too many beer boas nowadays are servicing sub par drafts due to neglected taps.
I was just passing through so I only had time for one drink before I had to get back to the shop, but it tasted pretty solid. Had a Great Lakes Dortmunder and it was fresh and well carbed, and that's a pretty light beer that would pick up off flavors.

They only have about 10 taps, and they're obviously focusing on craft beer so I imagine they'll have the sense to keep them clean. But then again, I've been to a craft beer bar or two in the area that either have too many lines or too inexperienced staff and end up with kegs that have gone bad or lines that have gotten funky. So I think we'll have to wait a while longer to get the verdict, since that "flavor" takes some time to build up.

Jersey City bar opens with unique motto: No Wi-Fi...Talk to each other!

By Steven Rodas | For The Jersey Journal The Jersey Journal

JERSEY CITY – The 100-year-old building that houses the recently-opened McGinley Square Pub has a rich history.

In the spirit of this classic style – which is evident from the large antique cash register that sits behind the bar – the owner draws inspiration for one of the pub's mottos: "No Wi-Fi: Talk to each other."

"What I'm trying to create here is a good vibe," said 36 year-old Angelo Hatzipetrou, who opened the pub at the end of May. "As you can see we have no televisions, that's done for a reason. We want to promote the social aspect of going to a pub."

McGinley Square Pub, located at 755 Montgomery St. in Jersey City, was formerly operated under the same name. Prior to that it was named after the Orson Welles' film "Citizen Kane."

and more importantly, looks like they have no TVs which i commend. so hard to find a bar in JC without a millions TVs to distract the patrons. looks like people have to suck it up and talk to other people here. cant wait to check it out!

Just stopped in a little earlier and it's nice cozy space with a decent beer selection. I really like the back lounge, though I'm not sure if making it smell like an old smoking parlour makes sense. A bit more food than just bar pies would be nice too, but maybe that will come in the future as business picks up. Digging the chess too. The whole place does feel a bit like you're going back in time, it's a great addition to the neighborhood.

no food yet, but saw a popcorn machine in the corner.

McGinley Square Pub is open again! Drove by the other day and the door was open and someone was standing at the door. I rolled my window down and asked if they were reopening and he said yes, we're open! I haven't been there yet but will try it this week.

Ah, the old Citizen's Kane Public Alehouse? I remember it well from my St. Peter's days - 7 dollars all you can drink on Tuesdays and Thursdays draught beers. It was the scene a lot of debauchery, underage drinking, fist fights, etc -but it was a heck of a lot of fun while it lasted!

Someone did fix it up nicely since then but it never seemed to pull the high school/college crowd like it did before. I hope I can be proved wrong but I just don't know if a "nice" place can do well there.

that would be great if someone did buy it, but considering that this is JC, i guess that doesn't really guarantee anything until we see it open anyway! That being said I am keeping my fingers crossed, and hoping that if it does open they will have good food!

I've been driving past the defunct McGinley Square Pub (Montgomery btwn Bergen & Kennedy) for years fantasizing about buying it and opening a gastropub - and suddenly, the for sale sign is gone! Has someone purchased it, or did the sign just blow away?
