Old Rascals Comedy Club - What's going on?

There's been significant cleanup in the past few weeks inside the old Rascal's Comedy Club on Marin, and today it looks like they started some interior construction. I know an artist had his studio in there for about a year, but it looks like he's out as a result of the cleaning/renovation.

I've been waiting for someone to open this up as a music venue or something instead of the developers taking over the lot.

Anyone know what the deal is?

It is going to be a big "Italian Bistro" Bar/Restaurant with the emphasis on BAR. They plan on using the entire space and are putting in big glass doors that look out onto Marin. They are just starting construction and should be open this summer.

Habib, the artist was thrown out and now has a gallery in Hoboken, NJ

artist: Habib Ayat

Not a music venue, but I'll take it. Habib has some great stuff - sad to see him head to the Boke.

Thanks for the info!

I'm having a hard time imagining what a HUGE Italian Bistro w/ emphasis on bar is going to look like. Basically like Michael Anthony's, but without the outdoor space and awesome views? Hmm.

You can not find a better view than that of the auto body shop across the street and those beauitful backyards.

I believe Jeff Favia, the old owner of the York Street Tavern is the person opening it up.

wow, big glass doors that look out onto Marin !! What a view!!! Anyway, hopefully it will turn out decent. I love some Italian. But don't get too excited just yet, if they just STARTED construction then there is pretty much NO WAY they will be open this summer. Nothing in the restaurant business goes THAT fast in the way of an opening. But I wish them luck & speed.

Yesterday I was driving on Marin Blvd and saw the garage doors open at the Rascals Comedy Stop Building. Inside their were people working on the floors and someone working on the roof. Does anyone know what is going on here?

it would be a whole lot cooler if they opened up a comedy club instead of another restaurant/bar...comedy club/music/poetry reading kind of thing-that serves drinks. I am all for lots of diverse places to eat but italian is a little played out, no?

it would be nice to have something different for a change.

I totally agree. If that was a functioning comedy club, I'd definitely be there at least once per month. I'm a huge standup fan, I think that's a great night out. If they could get some decent acts there and charge $15 at the door, I think the place would really work and do well.

or better yet, a non-specific performance space - a la Joe's Pub - where we can get comedy, spoken word, and especially some decent live music.

Walked by a couple days ago while they were putting down patio bricks and it actually looks like there'll be a huge amount of space inside, so who knows? Maybe they'll do some of that if there's demand. They'll have the room.

Agreed, but they tried the comedy club and it failed. Horribly.

It's a big space and a lot could be done with it. If it's true that the York Street people have taken it over then I guess we should probably expect cut-rate food early and a kareoke-type crowd at night. Anything is better than an empty building at that spot though.

Spoken word, poetry, comedy, I'm all for that.

But who in the world would go at that location?

I would. Its quicker than going into Manhattan, but if you mean what acts would perform there? Probably not very good ones considering the proximity to NY.

Oh well, I guess another bar/restaurant is going to have to suffice. Maybe they will have a gimmick or an incredibly menu. It would be nice to see them hire real bartenders and not just the big breasted morons that pass for bartenders.

spoke to friends of the owners.... Lounge - Restaurant will occupy the warehouse side aka MeatPacking District while a Pizza Bistro will be in the front corner .....Jeff Favia will bring his pizza to Downtown Jersey City after being successful in Hoboken for many years with Favia Lite .............We need more options in the heights since everything is downtown

I'm really looking forward to this! I hope that whatever goes in there speaks to the spirit of the neighborhood - something that is relevant to all the creative people who live around the Powerhouse area. I would hate for an artist to have been ousted in favor of a soulless, commercial, run of the mill pizza joint.

I think places like the Warehouse, Deen. and Parlay Studios help in bringing that arts/neighborhood vibe street level. Let's have more of that and not turn into another Hoboken, which has about a much personality as a frat boy (with a few notable exceptions, like La Isla, and Zafra).

They Just put up a cool cement sign - "Powerhouse Lounge" I live right next door and very excited, I'm hoping for a more "powerhouse" artist crowed verses the crowed across the street at the Irish Pub.

Walked by Yesterday with my dog. The place looks like it could open in a couple of weeks. I wonder what type of crowd it will attract. Does anyone know if it will be a resturaunt or just bar?
