Jersey City NAACP prez taken to task for knocking Schundler appointment

Michael Meyers, executive director of the New York Civil Rights Coalition took Jersey City NAACP president Kabili Tayari (shown above) to task today for publicly knocking the selection of former Jersey City mayor Bret Schundler to be the new state education boss.

Last week, Kabili Tayari, the president of the Jersey City chapter of the NAACP put out a release characterizing former Jersey City mayor Bret Schundler as unqualified to be the state's next education boss. (Schundler has been appointed by Gov. Chris Christie to take over the education department and his Senate Judiciary confirmation hearing, which began today, is scheduled to resume next Monday.)

Today, Michael Meyers, executive director of the Manhattan-based New York Civil Rights Coalition -- and a former assistant national director of the NAACP -- blasted Tayari, who is also a deputy mayor of Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy, for making public comments about the Schundler appointment.

"It (Tayari's statement) conveys a further erosion of the NAACP's prior pronouncements and policy about its supposed non-partisanship," Meyers stated in his release.

"Indeed, it used to be that spokespersons for the NAACP could only comment on the civil rights records of public officials and nominees for appointed or elective office based on a careful analysis and report on the candidate or nominee's voting record and positions on a range of civil rights issues. No outright 'opposition' to any such nominee or candidate was ever contemplated or permitted by the NAACP's non-partisanship policy," Mayers added.

"What's happened to that overarching and straightforward policy when a local NAACP official -- who himself is a public official -- in Tayari's case the Deputy Mayor of Jersey City -- is allowed to (seemingly on his own) commit the NAACP to opposing Mr. Schundler's confirmation as Education Commissioner?," Meyers went on.

"There appears to be a serious infraction and/or local exception made to the NAACP's strict non-partisanship policy with Tayari's opposition to Schundler, assuming that Tarayi is actually speaking for the NAACP chapter. If he is, as reported, speaking for the Jersey City NAACP, why hasn't the National NAACP spoken up about this apparent policy breach?," Meyers added.

Schundler, who is a Republican, started the Golden Door Charter School while he was mayor of Jersey City. Most recently he has been the chief operating officer at a Christian liberal arts college in Manhattan.

He supports school vouchers and merit pay for teachers.
