If you're using any in-site search feature, you're a lunatic and deserve to end up with nothing.

Follow Bodhipooh's advice and you'll get what you're looking for.

JC Dweller, you're nuts. The "What's going there?" thread is the best thing on the site.

As far as searching this site goes, that means using google rather than the lame onsite search bar.

For those whose with poor, or non existent google fu, skills, here is the best way to search and find anything here:

1. Go to Google.com
2. Click in Search bar
3. Type: site:jclist.com, followed by terms or phrase for which you are searching

Example:
site:jclist.com tankless water system

As far as searching this site goes, that means using google rather than the lame onsite search bar. But the point is more for active threads. There might be someone with interest or knowledge in "heating" who has no interest or something to add in "electric tankless", which is actually a rarity in our area.

Dear Webmaster,

Since you insist on consolidating threads, it would be helpful if you were consistent about changing the thread name to something appropriately generic. While a generic thread about "heating" has a certain logic, putting a question about a specific whole house gas heating system under a thread named "Electric Tankless Hot Water" does not.

Always seems to me, the people who bitch and whine the most about the administrations (both current and past) of any organization, whether it be a website, a condominium, a club, a municipality, or even the Federal Government, are the ones least likely to step up to do the job themselves.
Nothing wrong with making a statement, and perhaps even defending it, but after that, let it rest. Give credit to the guy running the place. And if you don't like the way it's being run, start to do it yourself, start your own website, run for the condo board, or for club president, or for mayor or even President, but stop being a cry baby.

I simply don't see this is as him being a nice guy to please posters of this site. No offense to the guy, but it's entirely in his own self interest to allow bitch fests on JClist. Without it, he gets waaaaay less traffic and loses members/number of posts/overall traffic as a result.

I don't mean to be a douche, but it's a private site run by said webmaster. He can run it however he wants.

He allows this to become a bitch-fest so give they guy slack. I would have told you guys to STFU LONG AGO!

I actually think the most annoying thing is that when you quote somebody, you quote the ENTIRE history of quotes, sometimes making a reply a mile long.

Click on the "Topics" link at the bottom of the topic list on the front page.

Or you can click on the "Message Forum" link on the Main Menu.

No wonder this community is a piece of work.

Using the mouse to scroll and search a page for content is a normal and expected user behavior. Scrolling UP is not and is a jarring experience. Novel, unexpected user experiences = poor usabilty = irate users who don't want to come back and engage with the software.

More than 50% of our traffic comes from search engines:

When I search google.com for: jersey city, nj gun law - I land here:
http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/viewt ... 0&forum=12&post_id=226808
A older topic that I merged today with a new somewhat related topic.

When I search google.com for: savas polish deli; jersey city, nj - I land here:
http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=211894
but here is another Topic that was posted today that was not merged:
http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/viewt ... id=226837#forumpost226837
Merging these will enable people to see all the information without having to do another search. People will be able to read about the type of establishment, proper name or address, reviews, etc all of which today's new topic omitted. Keeping similar information within the same topic provides organization, context, ease of use, brings older topics back to the front page, and makes doing research on Jersey City that much easier.

"The Beacon" topic consists of approximately 6 merges; I think the information from 2005 is useful to some and would be very hard to find if there were 6 Beacon topics.

This is not an exact science, many topics are over or under merged, sorry if anyone is not happy with this practice. I think overall the merging has worked out well. In the rules above the posting box we ask that people Reply to a related topic rather than start a New Topic. If anyone knows of a particular topic that should not have been merged post the link here and I will see if I can UN merge it.

By the way; the best search to use on this site is the "Advanced Search" link at the bottom right of this page; click on it then use that form on the next page for best results.

To give him a little credit (after years of these complaints) recently he actually has renamed threads he's consolidated, like the "old Linens & things" to "Best Buy". But not nearly as frequently as he should.

Threading? That's so Usenet, like 20 years ago! Web 0.5, this is Web2.0! (isn't it?)

The bigger failure is that the post thread is so grossly inappropriately titled.

Part of this is GrovePATH's tenuous grasp of English and then rewriting headlines ("Driver pulls gun on Holland Tunnel Hess gas station attendant -- but still pays for his gas").

But also, when merging post threads, sometimes there are two different topics being discussed and none of them regarding the posted title.

Yup, me too. Threads with hundreds of posts stretching back a year or more are unwieldy. Maybe, at the very least, write up a clear policy (with quantitative thresholds) concerning this (as well as the opposite; thread-forking) and put it in the FAQ section.

Also, are there any plans to upgrade the site to a better messageboard system? Something with the ability to have nested replies, ala reddit/digg/slashdot?
