I'd be interested in an oil, acrylic or gouache class, focusing on paint technique, not subject matter. I'm interested in abstracts but a lot of classes are figure and landscape, and mostly I know very little about how to manipulate paint. Great to have you around as a resource -- look forward to seeing what you come up with for classes!

If you would like a taste of the Jersey City Art School.. come and check out this one day workshop from 11am to 3pm this Sat!

Stop Motion: A Drawing Experiment

Rachael Serbinski

The concept for this class is based on the painting "Nude Descending a Staircase No. 2" by Marcel Duchamp.

The class will begin with exercises in layering. As the model assumes a series of brief poses, changing position only slightly each time, students will work continuously on the same piece of paper. Students will observe the dynamics of a figure moving through and merging with time and space and other objects. The resulting drawings will reflect multiple dimensions and each artist's unique perspective.

There will be several different exercises in which the model and the artists both move around the room shifting positions and vantage points. The class will end with a critique in which everyone will hang their drawings on the wall so we can observe the as a group the individual variations on a similar theme.

This is an experimental drawing class, and artists of all skill levels are welcome to participate. Bring your favorite drawing materials as well as something new to try. This class should be both challenging and fun!

April 10th, 2010

11-3 pm (Saturday)

$40 + $15 model fee

take care

Jersey City Art School received a grant; Last Sat night at an event called Art Eat-up ran by Pro Arts. I was applying for a grant to create a sculpture for the new public garden that will be in the school's 1100 foot backyard. This space will be available in the summer and be used for longer poses and botanical drawing and painting. This grant will also bring the school closer towards a sculpture studio in the very back of the property.

here is the proposal:

and this is information about the event:

The Photography class will be $70.00 per student. That will include 3 hours on Sat... and 3 hours on Sunday. You are required to have any kind of camera... however it would be best if you had a digital camera... even better if its an SLR.

As the programs move forward we will also be offering a photograms workshop with artist Glenn Friedel http://www.glennfriedel.com/

as well as a 6-week black and white film class.

take care

The painting class focuses on painting from life and some working from masterworks. We go through a different techniques (imprimatura, grisaille, alla prima) and start with very limited color schemes to full range. The painting section is only 4 of the 6 week class, so you will be getting an introduction.

Screen printing... I'm still looking for an instructor for the spring classes that start in April.

If you want to learn more about the school... I encourage you to check out this interview:

thank you and take care

TJ,

Do you offer screen printing classes (aka "silk screening)?

Or, does anyone know of such classes near Jersey City?

Thanks,

What kind of painting do you do in the painting class? I took a look at the website and I didnt find any information...

I'm definitely going to check out one of your figure drawing sessions.

Also, I talked to you at the Ball about it, but I would love to learn how to do screenprinting someday! :D

I ran this class last year with much success? I will be running it again for adults, and young adults (18 and up) I have a space that I?m working on turning into a dedicated art school on 5th street between Coles and Monmouth. I will run classes in January after the holiday season. Some limited classes workshop might exist in early December.

Introduction to Painting and Drawing

This is a class in drawing and painting designed for those with limited artistic training. A series of weekly exercises will train the student to master the foundation skills needed to continue to more advanced courses. The exercises include rendering the value scale, gradients, using a viewfinder, sight-sizing, composition, various painting techniques (under-painting, glazing and alla prima), and still-life. Classes will contain demonstrations of different classical exercises that will dramatically improve your ability to draw. Students will also be given optional assignments that will expand on the material presented in class.

There will be space provided in which you may store wet paintings, and materials.

The classes will be 3-hour sessions.
In January (6 sessions)

Class Fee: $200
Materials list will be sent you upon reply.
(I?m going to try to work out a deal to bring the costs down on this as it was a complaint last year)
Class limit: 10 (will develop more sections depending on interest)

Email me if interested in the class, or I will be doing a cheap art sale in November to fund-raise? keep in mind art or this class would make an excellent holiday gift.

I hope to ultimately be offering kids classes in the spring, perhaps earlier.

Take care

I would be very interested in that...I would be most interested in late afternoon/evening classes---perhaps a model to draw from, but also specific classes in oil painting, watercolor, etc.

I would prefer someplace that is accessible by the dollar van on Palisade (ie, Grove Street area or thereabouts) or somewhere that is close by the Light Rail, as I don't have a car.

BTW, I am a fan of your work! Beautiful.

I would love a weekly figure drawing class or painting class. I have looked into the local colleges but the prices are a little too high for me.

I would like to take a painting class - oils or acrylics, and my husband might be interested in watercolor.

I have two kids and would definitely be interested in classes for them. They are eight and 5/6 years old, and I and they would love some more serious instruction as opposed to just playing around and having fun. I think you could get a lot of people fof kids classes. Right now a lot of people have to schlepp their kids into Hoboken for art. I would love Saturdays for the kids classes.

Good luck to you. I think you might do well.

I use to teach art classes in Jersey City out of my studio. The time that I did it was very exciting to me and seemed to be popular. I discontinued the classes because I left for an art residency for 6 months. Since I have been back I have been searching for a more prominent space that was larger and that would feel a bit more like a school.

I feel like I'm getting very close to finding that space, so what this post is mainly to ask... what would you want in an private art school in Jersey City, what kind of classes? Who would be interested? Location?

I'm just trying to get some honest feedback... I have been a student of art my whole life, I've taught in different capacities, and I love Jersey City on plan on staying.. But I still feel like this would be a very big step.

thank you
take care
