Unfortunately, the landlord is usually standing right there with a threatening scowl on his face.

Whenever the building inspector visits me they only appear to be concerned with the smoke/CO detectors, whether or not there is debris on the fire escape, and if there are any leaks in the roof. If you have ANY issues with your apartment whatsoever, and your landlord isn't the kind of person who can be relied upon, show them to the inspector. It makes a great paper trail and tends to motivate the landlord a bit.

It takes two minutes and gives inspectors an excuse to shake down the landlord.

Every year they have a different issue they make believe they are looking for.

If you want to be nice to your landlord make sure your smoke and NO detectors have batteries and clear crap off the fire escapes and out of the hallways. The rest is up to him.

Your not giving enough information. Who is doing the inspection. What does it state on the notice?

In multi family dwellings there are a few types of inspections. Could be the State doing the inspections which is very routine...they check the fire alarms, doors etc. It could also be an inspection if the owner is refinancing..
