Lovely map -- but obviously submitted by someone who hasn't got a clue about the actual terrain. I've lived in Jersey City for more than 60 years, I've taught at St. Peter's, I've known people who were born and died at The Beacon when it was The Medical Center -- and I know from actually traveling in all parts of the city that the location is NOT within 4 blocks of St. Peter's. St. Peter's is actually more than three blocks from Bergen -- just traveling along Montgomery St. Factor in the trip down Bergen to Reed -- and that adds even greater distance.

Police Officers should be respected every day. Not just today. Their job redefines the definition of thankless.

I'm somewhat shocked about all the bickering on a thread like this. Well, it is Jclist, so maybe not that shocked.

But today is one of those days to thank a cop. I don't think people realize the sacrifice they go through every day to keep our city safe.

My love and respect goes out not to just the cops involved in the incident last night, BUT to all the police in our city who live the stress of situations like this everyday.

Never mind what I was saying about waiting a day....

http://www.politickernj.com/matt-frie ... 3/healy-shows-obama-rally

What an absolute idiot.

On a tragic day for Jersey City, Healy shows up to Obama/Corzine rally
By Matt Friedman, PolitickerNJ.com Reporter

*Update: President Obama referred to the situation in Jersey City at the beginning of his speech.

?I know many of you heard that five officers in Jersey City were shot in the line of duty this morning. I?ve been in contact with Mayor Healy about this issue, and obviously all the families are in our thoughts and prayers. It?s a reminder of what our law enforcement officials do each and every day to protect us and protect our families. Continue to keep them in mind as we go forward," he said.

HOLMDEL -- With five members of his city?s police force wounded in a gun battle with two suspects this morning, Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy came to see President Obama to push for federal legislation to ?staunch the flow of illegal handguns into our city,? according to spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill.

Healy had long planned to attend the rally, but was faced with grim news early this morning upon learning that two officers were in critical condition. He made it to the Jersey City Medical Center at 7:15am and stayed until 11:15am

When he arrived at the hospital, the life of one officer was in serious jeopardy, but his condition has improved. Healy said that the department has not yet identified the officer.

?It was very gloomy prognostication, but it?s gotten better and better,? said Healy. ?By the time we left, the surgeons, nurses and staff at the JCMC had basically accomplished a miracle and brought this one guy back from the edge? This could be a very happy ending?

Around 2pm, Healy, his wife Maureen and Corporation Counsel Bill Matsikoudis arrived at the pre-rally fundraiser, with Healy sporting a Jersey City baseball cap. He said it would be a short stay.

?I just came down to greet our president and express to him the skill and valor of the JCPD, and make sure we get what we think we deserve,? said Healy as he walked in.

I tried looking him up before but couldn't find that pic you posted until I clicked the alias button and typed the alias. For some reason you can't find him with his real name, or at least when I tried you couldn't.

You have to accept the terms of the site to view it. Type in the name and search.

It is him, looks exactly like the other mugshot from SC.

I wonder if he is related to the Hassan Shakur from Essex County on the NJDOC website doing life for murder?

5 police officers shot in Jersey City, two suspects identified
by The Jersey Journal
Thursday July 16, 2009, 3:15 PM

Here are the names and some information about the five police officers shot this morning in a Jersey City shooting on Reed Street off Bergen Avenue that left two suspects dead:

FRANK MOLINA JR., 35 : A 15-year veteran of the Jersey City police force, Molina is assigned to the Emergency Services Unit. He was shot in the back, saved by his bulletproof vest and remains in the Jersey City Medical Center for observation. He has 11 Excellent Police Service awards, three commendations and a World Trade Center award.

MICHAEL COMACHO, 25: A five-year veteran of the Jersey City police force assigned to the Emergency Services Unit, he was shot in neck and remains in critical condition at the JCMC. He has two Excellent Police Service awards and one commendation.

MARC DiNARDO, 37: A 10-year veteran of the Jersey City police force assigned to the Emergency Services Unit, he was shot in the face and is in critical condition at the JCMC. He has seven Excellent Police Service awards, twp commendations and the World Trade Center award.

MARK "SPIKE" LAVELLE, 43: A 20-year veteran of the Jersey City police force assigned to the Major Cases Unit, he was shot in the leg, treated and released. He has 20 Excellent Police Service awards, six commendation, two POBA valor awards, a Distinguished Service Award, a unit citation and a World Trade Center award.

DENNISE MITCHELL: A seven-year veteran of the Port Authority police force, he was appointed to the force in July 2002 and transferred to the Special Operations Division in 2006 where he was trained in special weapons tactics. He was shot in the arm, treated and released. He is married with two children.

The suspects are identified as Hassan A. Shakur, aka Hassan Hosendove, who was born on April 30, 1977, and Amanda Anderson, born on Aug. 30, 1986.

Police have posted a wanted poster in advance of a news conference at the JCMC showing the two and saying they were charged in the shooting of the Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., man on Broadway and were in possession of a car stolen in Charleston, S.C.

You were suggesting they weren't close to either Beacon or SP College... when in reality they are about 4 blocks away. And I was suggesting that whether or not you can *see* the Beacon, or *see* St. Peter's College from the actual street, doesn't mean they aren't close by. So people who were flaming the earlier poster who was asking if the street was close to Beacon were a bit misguided in their attacks when the proof is right there on the map.

I believe greenville said "do you even live in this city" - to which i would reply, "can you even read a map?"

By using the "directions" feature of the mentioned map, walking to either destination is 8-9 minutes (approx. .5 miles) to either point from the crime scene. No attack was intended, only that it is not "right next door." (Its about the same distance from the Medical Center to City Hall.) That way, people can have a better idea of where the event occurred.

What horrible violence.
God bless all the cops that were shot and injured. I hope all the naysayers and cop haters realize what these people face every day.
THANK YOU ALL FOR PUTTING YOUR LIVES ON THE LINE!!!!!!

If it is quiet at the time of the shooting it is. I have heard my share of shootings living in this city and have heard shots from that distance before. When there was that shooting on Merceles (New Houses) a few years ago where an old lady and kid were shot I was on Jersey and Second and heard the shots from there. I have heard shots coming from Hague st while sitting on a stoop in Bleecker in the Heights . I have heard shots on Bidwell all the way from Armstrong.

There has been times shootings were closer and I haven't heard them at all, it just depends how much noise is going on around you. The sound of gunshots travel a good distance and if you have heard gunshots a few times it is hard to confuse the sound with something else.

I believe they said in the conference that the cops observed the suspect with a shotgun under his clothing that's why they went after him and the other bird brain.

STOP BICKERING and stay on the story, you weenies.

---------

Christ, this story is terrible. I don't know anything about protocol. Do we have any idea why the cop in the stake-out walked up to the perps?

I know they're ESU and SWAT. I know they know what they're doing. If they suspected this group did the robbery last month at the oil change place, they know they're violent and ready to throw down.

I'm saying that I don't know what they're doing, so I'm looking for clarification.

The map does not tell the story buddy and apparently your such a weenie that you never walked around their to see the real distance. It's about the 3/4 distance from the Montgomery projects to dixon mills. Close I don't think so.

Trust me that is a short walk. I am sorry but if you consider that a far walk you are in no position to call anyone a weenie.

Greenville, why is someone a "weenie" (your terminology) just because they haven't walked around a certain area of town?? Why do you assume it is because they are scared??? There are plenty of areas of NYC that I haven't walked around and I lived there for more than 10 years.

If I don't have a reason or a desire to go to a certain part of town, I don't.

Also, I would consider 4 or 5 blocks close by.

i think his rationale is that every block in jc is the distance of like 1st street to 2nd street.

let's get it right downtown. not every neighborhood is like your new found/so-called "village" HA!
