This just blew my mind!

I saw a promo on NBC for America's Got Talent and it featured a contestant that I'm 95% certain was a cashier at the Jersey City A&P (near Target) within the past 6 months.

She was memorable to me because she was unusually subdued and friendly at the A&P.

OMG - I was on the phone last night with my friend who also lives in JC, and while on the phone with him, that commercial aired. I IMMEDIATELY recognized her as the eccentric, articulate, gray-haired cashier from the A & P!!!

Carol Lugo -- a longtime Hamilton Park resident, born and raised in Jersey City -- is our "talented" friend's name. And, yes, she is the nicest cashier ever at the A&P.

Carol is supremely kind and extremely humble, the sweetest of souls. [The auditioning process has been so long, and requiring of absolute discretion. When the TV crew recently visited to shoot her biographical video, Carol was eager, if adorably nervous, because her co-workers and neighbors would finally learn of her top-secret quest.] We are excited for her well-deserved opportunity in the spotlight.

Good luck, Carol!!!

Amazing. I adore this woman, she's been at the A&P for a decade at least and I'm always amazed at how pleasant and collected she is. There's an aura of calm about her (plus she always helps me out when I forget my A&P bonus card.

Yes, we didn't see the promo but watched the show. As soon as Carol came on my hubby said, Hey that's the cashier from A&P. Her performance was cute and energetic and I am glad she is going to Las Vegas!

She is the best. I'm still a little new to the area... 16 months but A&P is the only place to shop and this women stands out as the most plesant cashier thta I have yet to come across. Most cashiers are either talking on their cell phones or the other cashers but this woman blew me awway with how nice and genuine she was. Good for her.

yeah they posted this on hoboken411 a few weeks ago so i've been keeping my eye out for the show.

there are a lot of nice people at A&P. Luis, the produce guy is super nice, as is Mary who works the cashier. Both of them know my children by name. The guy behind the fish case is very nice as well, but I forget his name. And the cheese guy is also super friendly.

It's nice to see a local talent on television but that really doesn't look too impressive at least in my opinion. Just looks like she is wobbling around aimlessly on stage, not a winner in my books.

Carol is one of the nicest people I have ever gotten the chance to meet. No matter what promotion is going on for donations at A&P (MDA-March of Dimes-Children's Hopsital or to help fight childhood cancer) she is always asking for customers to help donate to someone who needs the help. Carol thinks of others before she thinks of herself. Carol is always there when you need her!

When we first met Carol she would talk about how much she loves to dance. WE'RE very glad that she is living out her dream to dance and sharing it with others.

YOU GO CAROL WE LOVE YOU GURL!!!! WE WISH YOU LUCK!!!!! AND WE LOVE YOU!!!!

KEEP MAKING IT HAPPEN CAROL!!! WE'RE VERY PROUD OF YOU!!!! WE HOPE YOUR DREAMS OF CONTINUING YOUR CAREER IN DANCING COME TRUE................. YOU DESERVE IT!!!

LOVE YOUR EXTENDED FAMILY AT A&P JERSEY CITY

Stacy

Management at the A&P seems to think that Carol is probably performing live this Tuesday evening. She seems like a really nice lady. Competition on this show seems to be pretty intense and it is great that she has gotten this far. Good luck to her and I hope she has a blast in Hollywood.

Carol is patient & kind, and she is also the best customer anyone could ever have.

Carol, if you read this, I think you are wonderful. I see now what you were trying to do. I'm glad that I was able to help you.

Was in there today again at their coffee bar and they had a nice note about her at the register. Maybe it would be nice if the local media did a little "feel good" story about her.
From all I've heard her pleasant manner is a welcome change from much of the rude service that many of us seem to encounter all to often.

Thanks for that link. The article says that viewer voting {by phone I think or probably internet also} determines which acts go forward in the competition. If her act is good enough I'll vote for her as much as I can to help her out. I have my doubts about whether her act can win the grand prize but it would be nice to extend her vacation. Maybe she can get a tv commercial or some other gig as a result of her act.

I think whoever set up Carol's strategy tonight made a mistake. They needed to play up her age. She is amazing for her age, not for a 20 year old dancer. Instead, they stripped her down and made her look like an average dancer with nothing special going on. She was fantastic in her interview, but I think the hair extensions and the outfit were a big mistake.

Is her last name Loo or Lugo?

You can cast your vote here.
http://www.nbc.com/americas-got-talent/vote/register.shtml

or text 4803 with the word VOTE.

or you can go ahead and call your vote in at this number.

866-602-4803

10 vote max per method. I got my votes in. With all the bad news we've had the past few weeks, it's nice to see something good coming out of JC. I wish her nothing but the best.

When she first appeared on the show, her name was listed as LUGO. However, last night, they clearly had her name listed as LOO. Not sure why???

I think that the novelty of a 63 year old spinning her head and bopping in a skimpy outfit will not propel her to win the contest. That said, I DO think it'll earn her some notoriety and maybe a couple of minutes of being in the spotlight. If I had no idea who she was and watched her for the first time last night, I'd think "okay, that was mildly entertaining but, in no way worthy of a million dollars". Because I know who she is, I thought "you go, girl!".........

Here's her performance:

Wonder if they changed her name to be more quirky, or if that's actually her name?

Carol is one in a million. Besides being a super nice person, she is a passionate, if a little unpolished, artist who dances from her heart.

As a sixty-something who has maintained her athleticism and flexibility, with coaching, she could definitely have a successful professional dance act.

The time is right. I hope she pursues her dream.

Carol is great! She's so nice and does one hell of a job.

I sent an e-mail out to my friends to vote for her. Too bad it wasn't enough!

BUT she did more than most of us do-- she tried to pursue her dream! BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Supporters, You're the Best
by CAROL LUGO, Jersey City

[from "The Jersey Journal, September 14, 2009, 12:01 a.m.]

Thank you, Jersey City residents.

To all who texted, who voted on my behalf in support of making my childhood dreams of dancing come true, I thank you with all my heart. I want you to know my dreams of dancing are alive as ever. I hope to make your vote count beyond "America's Got Talent" show and into the future.

Lastly, I am privileged to live here in this wonderful city with you. Jersey City is a place of my birth, for me, the warmest place on earth. Thank you once again, and bless you all.
