You can head up to Jersey Ave and stop at Marrow deli. A little further from the path but worth it. The owner used to work at A-1 and then opened his own place a really nice guy. He serves the same boarshead cold cuts cheaper and in my opinion fresher bread. He even offers a whole wheat sub roll and a some other harder roll. It always irritated me when A-1 would charge a different price then on the board then tell you it was for pickels or something.

BrooklynBoy,

If you're referring to me, thanks for informing me that it's a DELI. I once was lost, but now am found.

My God
IT IS A DELI
They sell chips and deli sandwiches everywhere. If you do not like it the first time then do not return.

I can not believe this tread popped up again.

They do not sell fine French cheese. They do not sell Frio Gras. They do not sell prosciutto.

IT IS A DELI.

Get your chips and deli sandwich at American Hero. Christopher and Grove. They are great and remember you. Unless you are out at 3:00 AM then sweetie A 1 is your only choice.

Good luck my dear

Funny! Hey I was on the turnpike at the service area and some woman was going on and on to some new Starbucks worker about her whip cream topped drink not being up to snuff - but she wasn't kidding. I told her that they also sold coffee in the Sunoco mini mart - and she just stared at me.

I decided to try the A1 Deli because of good reviews on Yelp. I enjoyed the food but received snotty and rude service on a Friday night. Has anyone received similar experiences or should I give them a second shot? Thanks.

Don't know if it's the same guy, but it seemed like it is from the description? I was in Beechwood Cafe just now and a guy walked in and was causing trouble sounding very similar to the original post, and then sat down at a table and challenged the waitstaff to call the police on him. I don't think there was a dispute over anything sold here, just an angry guy.

you are buying TOMATOES for christ's sake! What's so hard with putting up a "no refunds on produce." sign? Something tells me Ms. Lee is a little paranoid. As a previous poster said, do people really do this to save $2.50? People in this town really need to get a hobby and stop with all this petty crap!

Despite all the tax dollars that go to funding local school security, this is what we hear from common thieves. Someone should debrief this guy and find out where identifiable breaches in security lie - and fix them!

Well look what else is going on at A-1 Deli :

Homeless Jersey City thief was sleeping at school, police say
by Tom Shortell/ The Jersey Journal
Thursday June 11, 2009, 9:09 PM

Rodney VallionA homeless thief was caught early today bunking at St. Peter's Prep by night and selling items he allegedly stole from the Downtown Jersey City school by day, reports said.

According to police, Rodney Vallion, 50 -- who has a long history of burglarizing the high school -- was sneaking into the building every night for about a week through a side door he propped open before a security guard noticed him clambering up a fire escape at around 3:15 a.m. today.

Vallion, who was sleeping on the fourth floor, told police he recently got out of jail and had been sleeping at the school ever since, reports said.

Vallion also told police he had sold property he stole from the school at A-1 Deli on Grove Street, reports said.

Police set up an undercover investigation and caught deli employee Fel Basem, 31, trying to purchase what he thought was a stolen laptop from the school, reports said.

Police searched the deli and found a VCR and a toolbox that Vallion said he sold there and a St. Peter's Prep faculty member identified as school property, reports said.

Vallion was charged with burglary and theft and Basem with fencing stolen property, police said.

Vallion has been caught burglarizing Saint Peter's Prep in 1995, 2002 and 2006, said Police Sgt. Michael Gajewski. "He said schools were his specialty. He found them to be easy targets, easy access," Gajewski said.

School officials, including the president, the Rev. Robert Reiser, didn't return phone calls to comment.

The Rev. John Mullin, a guidance counselor at the school, said tonight that he had only heard that someone was caught breaking into the school early this morning. Mullin said school had ended for the summer on Sunday when graduation was held.

According to the New Jersey Department of Corrections' Web site, Vallion was sentenced to up to five years in prison for two counts of burglary in 2006 in Hudson County. The Web site indicated Vallion was still in custody, but the site is only updated every two weeks.

Marrow's is less, but still too much.

Please read through my posts to see if I said anyone was lying. I merely stated my own opinion and observations and gave some detail about the number of times I go in there so that the reader might decide what weight to give my comments. Same as you giving your opinion and observations.

Please read through my posts and see if there's anything to suggest I have any reason to lie about the smoking. I was there late at night. They were smoking behind the counter. I go there most mornings for a big bottle of water, so it's not like I am boycotting them. But THEY DO smoke behind the counter.

+1 Hudson Hawk

I have bought so many sandwiches from A-1 on so many different occasions, I really can't count them. I have never observed signs of smoking behind the counter, and the guys have always been very polite and quick. I happen to like the egg salad---in fact, last week I had at least 3 egg salad sandwiches, and they were consistently delicious.

Observing an arguement over a few tomatoes is no reason to stop making purchaces at A1-deli.

I have bought avacadoes from Lees a few times over the years when they looked good on the outside and turned out they were rotten on the inside. Mrs. Lee accused me of swaping avacadoes from they competitors on Newark Ave and reluctantly refunded me.

The only problem I have with A1-deli are the bums and junkies that beg for money as you walk in and out of their store.

I can?t believe how easily it is to motivate people on this site to actually hash out punishment to other people based on one side of the incident (not even by the alleged victim) without getting all of the facts from both parties. Is this the way the justice system works on this site?

A recognized purpose for this site is restaurant reviews.

In the thread above I mentioned how I don't like A1's egg salad, and I find the place cruddy. I've also posted in two Taqueria threads about my experiences.

Smoking behind the counter is a legit problem, though as a vegetarian, it's not my problem.

Despite my hyperbole on this thread, it's not personal. The facts are demonstrable, and the opinions are malleable and that's where disagreement sits. Too often that disagreement becomes personal, heated, and unkind. And thus, unhelpful.

Anonymous sniping is very uncool. (And redundant).

I agree! Wow..self loathing..that's strong. If you people keep it up, we are going to see a thread, that says JClist-er Commits Suicide After Remarks From fellow JClist-er

I even read somebody calling someone out for cheating on their wife on JClist by sending PMs to women..hahahhahaha!

But taking potshots at Jaded for (re)presenting her position is silly. That is: psychobabble about "self-loathing" doesn't make any sense here. Nothing Jaded did suggests she lacks confidence or a positive self-regard. And, there is no hatred-of-self by way of another from the same race.

What's "embarrassing" is the anonymity this blog provides to 95% of you punks out there. Everybody's taking pot shots at everybody else: this restaurant sucks, this OP sucks, this egg salad sucks, etc.

What could be a useful forum for information-gathering... no longer. Just in-fighting and sniping, and no reason to believe any OP or comment presents a valuable viewpoint.

Totally agree. People are out of control around here lately. It seems to come in waves.

Maybe it's the economy. It's making people super nasty. Or it's Healy's fault. One or the other. Oh, or it's racism. Probably racism.
