I work at newark airport and live off of grove street. I don't have a car here and take the path/bus every day for work. Super easy! The 62 bus runs about every 20mins and even more frequent during peak hours. Once you get off the path, just go down the escalators and exits to the bus lane are your right by mcdonalds. Bus lanes are covered so rain, snow, etc, you'll be ok! The 62 also drops you off directly in front of EACH terminal so you're covered there too! Only about a 20 min bus ride too...

Is there a lot of outside time between the 1) Penn Station PATH and the bus and 2) between the terminal bus drop off and getting to the terminal? Just trying to plan for when it's raining (weather forecast says it's a rainy Friday!).

I have done the bus and it was fine, probably quicker than the airtrain/NJ Tranist and certainly alot cheaper. Plus you save one up/down transfer of your luggage. The one problem i see is that the bus schedule wasnt all that frequent so beware of that.

A-1 taxi is also $25. Worth it to avoid a bus to Grove St. or Journal Square, then PATH, then train or bus, plus monorail. Especially with two people.

I've never taken the 62, but the bus terminal at Newark Penn Station is in the same building as the PATH and it's really well marked. You just take the escalators down to the station and look for Bus Terminal signs. There are several bus lanes on the side of the station.

Looks like taking the bus saves you $7 each way, as opposed to taking the train. I was going to say that it's much easier taking the train -- get to the Airport Station in 5 minutes, but when you add the time it takes to switch to the AirTrain and then get to the terminals, it might not be that different.

You might be onto something here.

I've been doing some research on public transport to EWR and the general consensus on the cheapest fare seems to be this route:

PATH to Newark Penn Station
NJT Bus 62 to EWR terminal

Has anyone taken this and is it a pain to switch to the bus at Newark Penn? I've never been to the Newark Penn Station so not sure how far the walk may be from where the PATH drops off and the bus lane. Same with the bus drop off at EWR?

Thanks!

I had no idea taxis charged $46 from the airport to JC. Last night, I ended up getting in an airport taxi and then promptly exited when I looked at the rate sheet. I hate to think what it costs to go somewhere more distant.

I called Downtown Limo after getting out of the airport taxi and they picked me up in 15 minutes - just like SF said, at the arrival level. It cost $25, the same amount it cost to get there (by Ace). The driver told me that if you give them the flight details at the time you book the taxi to go to the airport, they will automatically pick you up. I have no idea if that works out as planned though.

$46 is highway robbery and they (whoever they are, Port Authority?) shouldn't be allowed to get away with it.

Budget Taxi takes me to the airport from downtown for $25. To me, its worth the extra money to leave home at a reasonable time.

I agree with Jaded that the AirTrain/PATH is pretty painless. I've done it several times and have taken relatives to and from the airport by the same route. Weekdays ARE easier than weekends, but at least the NJ transit usually runs on schedule, so it removes some uncertainty about when you're going to get there. I hate the uncertainty of dealing with airport traffic. Maybe not a big deal when you're coming home, but going there, it kills me. If you coordinate the train schedules properly, especially in the A.M., the whole trip will probably take you less than 40 minutes.

Usually when going to the airport, I take a cab from my house to Journal square, so with the $5 cab figured in, it's less than $15.00 one way.

I've taken the local bus from Newark Penn Station to the airport.

Newark-bound PATH train to Newark Penn Station, take the NJ Transit Northeast Corridor or NJ Coast Line (Make sure the train route says EWR next to it) to the Airport - first stop, transfer to AirTrain, and get off in your terminal. Be sure to save your NJ Transit ticket, as you'll need it to get into the AirTrain

So if I want to get from Exchange Place to Newark Airport by train, how would I do it?

(Sorry, I'm new and my only trip to the airport so far was by car service/taxi and, like others pointed out, it was quite expensive)

It's more like two trains. I don't really count the airport monorail that moves between the terminals, parking lots and train station. I always take the train between Grove Street and Newark Airport. During the week, it's quite convenient. Weekends can be a bit of a drag because there are only two NJ Transit trains an hour that stop at the airport. Otherwise it's pretty easy and painless if you don't have a lot of luggage. Coming from the airport, the transfer at Newark Penn Station to the PATH is very easy - right across the platform.

Thats good to know about the three trains. I was confused if Airtran went right to the Path Train in Newark. Seems easier to take a cab.

Most taxi fares are standardized by the airport dispatch, so I'm not sure that you'll find a better price than that unless you book one prior to your flight (as opposed to booking one curbside). Train might not be bad if you go when they're running often, but then you'll have to tay 3 different trains just to get to JSQ... might not be worth it. NJ Transit is 7.50/pp for the train

Call a local taxi such as A-1 just as you land and they'll instruct you where to meet the cab at the upper level. That's the best deal, and works out best during off hours.

The last time I flew into Newark I paid $45 for a taxi from the airport to Journal Square. I think this charge is quite high for a 10 minute trip.

I am looking for a different way to get home from the airport and wanted some suggestions.

Has anyone taken the Airtran to Newark and then the Path home?

Please let me know your experiences or if you know of a cab company that is cheaper than the $45.

Thanks.

I've used A-1 Taxi & Limo 201.432.3333 many times to get from Hamilton Park to Newark Airport (and back). They have always been on time -- even at 4:30am. They call me when the car is downstairs, so at least I don't have to wait outside. The fare is $25 and I usually ask how much when I make the call. The last time I took it was the end of October and gas prices are much cheaper now, so I can't imagine an increase from the $25. Happy Holidays.

A1 Karma: 201.333.6666. they charged me $28 plus tax and tip from downtown jc to EWR. (i paid $36 total). they were on time for pickups from my home and from the airport. don't know if they're the cheapest, but i was very happy with their service.

I always take King Taxi, and have never had a problem. I think it is $28 from JC.

But that won't get you through the fare gates for the airtrain, and if I recall correctly there are no machines to buy a ticket on that side... and that's an extra $5 anyway...

and, like i paid, NY Penn -> EWR = $15 ($5 airtrain so a $10 fare)

so why do you get hit with an extra $6 penalty? i understand EWR is slightly further down the track, but NY Penn -> Elizabeth comes up as $5.50 and Elizabeth is even further south down the track than the airport.

is this really just a tax for people getting off at the airport?

If you want to take the PATH to Newark Airport then take the Newark bound PATH to the last stop which is Newark Penn Station, then go outside and take the No. 62 NJ Transit Bus to the airport. I think the bus is about $1.75 and they are running on a Sunday schedule on Thanksgiving Day.

I've done this in the middle of the night when there were no NJT trains to EWR (had like a 5 am flight) and it was just me and the airport employees -- and zero traffic. It was an easy, quick ride. Probably the cheapest way to get there, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it during the holiday rush.

You guys hit the nail on the head for the elevated fee to EWR. There are about 26,000 Airport employees that live in NY and NJ. They don't want them to catch that train from Penn Station NY or NJ, the want to persuade them to catch the #62 bus for $1.32 from Penn Station Newark.

the last time i did this we went to Newark Penn on the Path and took the $15 taxi, but that ended up being sort of a disaster because downtown Newark very congested. and if you look at a map, newark airport is sort of inbetween JSQ and newark penn, so you're sort of going out of the way into downtown newark and then throwing yourself into newark traffic to get back out

i like the port authority bus idea i'll look into that next time
