It's not karate, but you might be interested in checking out http://www.doceparesusa.com. It's an escrima school, but they also do empty hands, and ground holds etc. Attended some classes when they were at 440, they're now in Jrnl Sqr area.

Brickhaus Fitness has free karate classes twice a week. Of course, you have to join the gym.

They have an awesome 9th degree black belt instructor.

The class size is so small, it's almost like personalized instruction.

I am in JSQ, but not looking for kickboxing. I prefer tae kwon do, jujitsu, karate...
There is a Shotkan Karate place on Elm St I was thinking about checking out.

I would definitely recommend this place. My son goes there and the instructors are great with him. He looks forward to going to his class.

I've been taking the kickboxing classes on & off for the past two years now. One of the best places around. The instructors (when the usual ones around) are very good & the cost is around 70/month range.

Good luck!

o man that brings back memories.. i used to go there when i was little and when it used to be on the 2nd floor right next to helens pizzeria. i remember my mom and my aunts started going for kickboxing too right after my class was over lol. it was pretty funny to watch them try and kick the bags and do what the instructor told them to do.

I vouch for JC and any of their other dojangs (schools). They have solid instructors and you'll learn more then just TKD. My former school where I was an instructor (Street Survival TKD) were closely affiliated with them.

I've also used it before and found the trainers are very good. Its more personal than going to a huge gym and they offer better classes. You can also get Taekwondo and self defense lessons that come in handy for those late nights from the path.

I have been a member here for about 8 months and love it for the most part. I go around 4-5 times per week to the kickboxing classes. Most of the instructors usually are really good, except there are only 4. One is currently injured, and the other two have not been around much so the classes have been pretty weak lately.

It really depends what kind of workout you are looking for, how in/out of shape you are, and if the class schedule fits your schedule.

The rates are $59 for only weekend classes, $69 for a year membership, and $79 for month to month.

The website is www.jctkd.com, but I would recommend going in to talk to the instructors.

Are there any reviews of the Taekwondo / Kickboxing place on Newark Ave near Grove St? How are the classes, instructors, rates? Thanks!
