A 1 PM explosion occurred in front of the Subway and GNC stores. The explosion shook the ground setting off car alarms. A second later a cloud of smoke emerged from the grate. All the while, people looked aimlessly around for clues and the police. Most were perplexed and waited for the help to arrive.

Five minutes later, we heard the first of five or 6 fire sirens in the distant to arrive at the site. Thank goodness for our Homeland Security ... looks like money well spent.

We think it is most likely a transformer explosion, but it would be nice to know what exactly happened. Any one with information, please post. Thanks.

I was in my car 10 feet from that crate (in the blue Bimmer) when the explosion occurred.

HOLY SMOKE!

There was a car ahead of me right over the crate - I swear the blast must have lifted the poor guy a few inches off the ground.

I felt as if something massive hit my car's undercarriage, but it was just an air blast.

I got out of there as fast as I could.

I thought it must have been a transformer that blew.

It was an transformer explosion at Grove and Columbus.

It was a transformer explosion under the ground - PSE&G, police and fire are all there.

There was just one injury -- but she isn't really hurt just shaken up.

Must have been the lady in the car directly on the crate, just ahead of me.

Scary.

Transformer explodes in Downtown Jersey City

by Charles Hack Sunday February 24, 2008, 2:17 PM

A 4,000-volt underground transformer exploded this afternoon near the Grove Street PATH station, authorities said. PATH service wasn't affected and no outages were reported.

The accident, which occured about 1:15 p.m. at Grove Street and Christopher Columbus Drive, sent debris flying into the air. Some of the debris hit a car waiting at traffic light; a woman in the vehicle received relatively minor injuries, police said.

A PSE&G crew has been called to the scene to make repairs.

Those were the quietest car alaarms in history. My son and I had just come from eating lunch at Sava's Polish Deli and were waiting for the lights at newark and Grove. We hear the bang. Saw to smoke, noted which cars (including the beemer) were so close to the origin of the smoke that we thought at first that it was the cause of the explosion . . .

But there were no - I repeat - no car alarms that went off.

I was in the bimmer - I was startled, but definitely remember at least one car alarm going off to my left.

Maybe two.

Not that it is that important.

It could have been much worse.

I heard at least 2 car alarms coming from the Grassy Knoll although many people were pointing to a window above the Dunkin' Donuts! Oliver Stone where are you?
