I second Sapthigiri ~ the food is clean, beautifully presented, spiced just right. Each dish that I've tried has surpassed my expectations. I will not order Indian at work in Manhattan anymore ~ the food we have here is always way better. I wouldn't necessarily want to dine in at this restaurant ~ but love, love, love their take out.

I've visited many of the Newark Avenue "Little India" places over the years.

Rasoi is an old standby, an a good default choice if you're bringing friends, family, etc who are not familiar with Indian food. If you want meat, a buffet, or alcohol, it's a good choice.

But is you want really good food, you have to try Sapathagiri. I'm not a huge fan of dosa, but theirs are the best I've had. Every dish I've tried (or sampled across the table) has been good to great, visually attractive, and a treat to the nose. Service is good, attentive and not intrusive.

Breads are good, try the bhatura for a nice show. Overall, their south Indian and house specialties are probably a cut above the northern Indian menu. But it's all good.

And they're kosher - or claim to be. I haven't met their rabbi.

My new favorite not located in downtown is Chaska. I only went there because I had a groupon, but the food was delicious. The owner is a little curt and portions were a little smaller when compared to other restaurants but it is worth it to me. Also they are open to midnight!

Disclosure: I have not eaten at Canteen yet

A few years ago, I took friends of mine to Rasoi.....some of them kept Halal. The first time we went no problem...the waiter said yes we are halal. A couple of months later we come back...different friends...some keep Halal...told no we don't keep halal.

I checked with some other people who have gone to Rasoi and some of them said yea its halal...others said...they were told it wasn't.

So the fact that they could act that way....i have never ever gone back. Lying to people who are trying to observe dietary rules for whatever reason is just plain wrong.

I agree on Rasoi and Sapathagiri as favorites in the Newark Ave area, but when I'm eating out I tend to go toward Rasoi for the liquor license. Does anyone know if Sapathagiri is byo, or if it's just dry?

Paratha Junction is running a discount on Amazon Local. $7.00 gets you $15.00 of food. I've never been there, is it any good?

Canteen hands down on Newark ave. in little India. Prices are great, food is spectacular. The only negative the bathroom is in the kitchen. I visit this place at least 15-20 times a year. Good Times.

Thanks Leigh! I started a new post because this thread was pretty old but I'm glad to see that a lot of these places are still there.

I've been to the newly opened Mantra on Washington Street across from the post office. Great decor and great food. Not oily like some other Indian restaurants around here.

We ordered from Dosa Hut on seamless and although it took forever (1hour plus) all the food was delicious. We ordered a bunch of stuff and got way more than what we were expecting and didn't know what was what but it was a feast!

I do remember liking the dosa least. The curry dishes were wonderful and even better for lunch the next day.

Agree completely. My experience with Spirit of Laxmi is that, if you ask, they will give you more rice, naan, etc. without any fuss. I also like to eat in there - it's BYO.

grovedesign: I just called and they answered. I asked if there were closed on Mondays ( as many places in JC are) and they said yes, for the summer they are closed on Monday). Next time, before starting rumors that a business has shut down...call again the next day :)

If you are at the Newport Mall and had the sudden urge to have Indian food, the one in the Food Court is pretty good - don't remember the name offhand(Taste of India?)

Not bad for a lunch place, freshly baked Naan, and most of the basics such as chicken tikka masala and lamb rogan josh. And they have mango lassi too.

Amiya is pretty good but for some odd reason they don't deliver naan on weekends. That prompted us to ordering around - all okay, not fantastic (esp since the wait time on delivery can be 45+ min) - but then we found Spirit of Laxmi (http://www.spiritoflaxmi.webs.com/). The website is not so great but I found them through seamlessweb.com.

I found the cheaper priced dish to be better than say the same dish at Rasoi on newark ave.

One of my neighbors said Mithaas is quite good. It's also featured on http://www.destinationjerseycity.com/.

It's located in Little India, middle of the block.

Sapthagiri rocks ~ I've eaten there for 1+ years and the food is always interesting, tasty and beautifully presented. I've brought leftovers to work on Mondays and (Indian) colleagues have come sniffing in my cubicle to ohh & ahh ~ asking where I ordered from. Portions are huge too and I even have leftovers to share.

One drawback, their phone line's busy all Saturday night. Tried to order from them tonight for 45 minutes, gave up and speed dialed for pizza, instead.

Re Grove Street: any worthwhile options there? I always think not so much but tell me that I'm wrong o that I can support one of them too, thanks.

If you want a Vegetarian meal, I highly recommend Sapthagiri. If you are looking for a non veg, I personally like Taj Mahal also on Newark ave, but it’s up the block near Summit. If you want to stay in little india, Rasoi is not bad either. All I had from Paratha Junction was a Paratha and I thought it was bad.

I have eaten at a few of the Newark ave restaurants and Rasoi is my favorite. I have been there several times, always with a few people and have never been disappointed.

I would highly recommend Paratha Junction. Their menu is smaller but the items they have are all delicious. Their paratha's are a must have.
