Looking for a current food pantry to donate some spare canned food in Greenville or Bergen Laf. section of the city. I read the thread and looking to donate to those locations vs. downtown ones posted here.

If you're not limiting it to downtown, then please donate to the Sharing Place at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Five Corners.

They feed about 600 families and individuals a month, and they are always in need of volunteers and donations. They've been seeing a steady increase in the guests they've been receiving during their distribution Saturdays, and they could use the extra help.

Looking for updated info on this:

What are some current, in operation downtown JC food pantries? Looking to donate more regularly (not just Thanksgiving and Christmas) to these causes but am having trouble finding any updated info on the web.

Also, besides Grace Van Voorst, are there any other places that serve meals to the hungry?

Thanks!

Nice idea. And if it's your site Abhinav? Just say so.

I've volunteered for years with CityHarvest and have often wished there was something similar on this side of the river. I would note that CityHarvest has extensive procedures in place to ensure food safety, and that the food is going where it's meant to.

Hope you build that in to your new venture as well.

St. Lucy's on Grove Street in JC will always accept cooked and non-cooked foods including leftovers. Just stop by, walk up the steps, and drop off at the front desk. If you have a lot of items, they will come out and help you, too. The items are very much needed.

Description - St. Lucy's Shelter is a supervised 24-hour, 7-day-a-week, year-round emergency shelter facility for single women and men offering emergency housing and food for those in need. Individuals are offered a 45-day stay.

Address - 619 Grove St, Jersey City, New Jersey ( NJ ) 07310-1227
Telephone - (201) 656-7201

Is there a food shelter in the area where I can drop off leftovers? I made too much food for the Super Bowl.

Hi - My office is organizing a holiday food drive and I was looking for a 501c3 charity in Jersey City to give our donation to. Has any one worked with a good one in the past?

Thanks!

They will take any type of food to feed their homeless population - canned, prepared, party/meeting food leftovers, etc. Just drive up and drop off.

Your generosity is very kind!

Hi Folks, My wife just won 25 burritos from Chipotle, and we'd like to donate them to a shelter, food pantry, or homeless center, etc in JC. Any suggestions?

I have some cans of food I want to donate and would like to know if there are any of those drop off bins at grocery stores or at soup kitchens I could take them to.

I have an older neighbor on the block and we were speaking last week. She wants to go to a food pantry but does not know where one is. We live in the Village area of downtown JC. She is in her 90's so I would like something close. I will go with her. Any suggestions.

One time the homeless dude in front of paradise deli asked me for some spare change. So I told him that I went food shopping recently and that I would bring him a sandwich in lieu of any money. He said that he has bad digestion and that he prefers to eat at a specific place that caters to his intestinal problems. I would have loved to know where this health food haven was, but he refused to tell me. So, instead of trying to feed homeless people I now pop in at LHS once in a while and bring food and litter to the homeless cats. Besides, they look cuter and they never ask me for change.

Great, thanks guys! Those both seem like exactly what I was looking for. If there are any places that serve during the week let me know too. I have an unpredictable work schedule and those are sometimes my free times.

Best,
J

Grace Church at 39 Erie does sat and sun 7-9:30am. We serve a big hot breakfast for the hungry. You can cook, serve, help clean up, whatever you feel comfortable with. My husband and i do the third sunday of every month, but you can show up any sat or sun to help out.

Hey all,

I am interested in putting in a few hours a week at a local soup kitchen (preferably downtown JC). Anyone know of a good one with a volunteer program??

Thanks,
J

Well, I guess the best thing I can do for CAUSE is mail them a donation and a couple of gift cards to a supermarket.

Yes, I think the problem with CAUSE is that they're kinda poorly run. The first time I went there I was annoyed because they didn't answer the phone all day, and there were no hours posted on the door. I almost took my stuff elsewhere, but then I remembered the poor people waiting on that line.

I drive by there periodically, and I notice that they are usually open a little after nine a.m. because they're handing out food.

I used to drop stuff off at Cause Center when I went to St. Doms in the 90's. I think they are closed a few days of the week. I live nearby, so I'll try to catch their hours and post them here for you guys when I'm out walking the dog tomorrow.

They open at about nine and close by two=thirty.

Are they closed on Mondays? I kept calling them this morning and no answer. I decided to take a ride over there around 1PM and both the pantry and thrift store were closed. I wound up donating the food at GVV and St. Lucy's.

I'll give CAUSE another try. I'd really like to help them out.

There may be a thread on this already, but I haven't seen one in a while, so feel free to merge this, admin.

Does anyone know of anyplace downtown to donate some spare canned goods I have? There's a ton in my cupboard that I'm never going to use and I'd like to see it all put to good use.

I was driving on Bergen Avenue at about 8:30 Monday morning, and I noticed a line of people waiting for a food pantry to open. I figured they must be low so I went there this morning to drop off some food. Again, there was a line of about 25 people waiting to get in. It was very sad to see young mothers with babies and elderly people there.

While I was dropping off my donation I noticed that there was not a lot of food there, especially considering the line outside the door.

The volunteers there told me that they don't get a lot of donations, and that they buy the food themselves from money they make from the thrift shop next door.

It is in a very poor and needy area, so if you are looking for somewhere to bring food to a pantry they would appreciate it.

It's called the C.A.U.S.E center, 739 Bergen Avenue.

201-432-2824
201-333-5936

It's just south of Montgomery St. and it's near McKinley square. It's not dangerous or scary there during the day.

They open at about nine and close by two=thirty.

And they will give you a letter for tax purposes.

I see people lining up at the basement door of St. Mary's (2/Erie) and leaving with bags of groceries. I think it is Monday.

GCVV does have the ability to store perishable items- a fridge and freezer. Talk to Nick at Grace, i think the number for the office is 201 659 2211.

Also, St. Matthew's on Wayne between Barrow and Erie St. They accept non-perishable items only, not sure if G.V.V. has the capabilities to store perishable items.
