Called royal. Great guy on the other end talked me through my sightglass issue with ease and is going to come out and have a look at the system.

Good luck! Steam is so freaky compared to simple hot water heat. I don't know anything about 2 pipe, but why should it need a bleed when he condensed steam should flow down the pipe? My experience with valves and controls is that it's much cheaper to replace them if you suspect them rather than call for service where you'll pay a markup and very expensive labor for what's usually pretty simple. Worsts case is you now have a new part that's above suspicion when the pros come. Most recently my fancy Samsung fridge was being wacky again and I replaced the $125 main controller board with ease and success.

Thanks for the suggestion. I dove into all the heating forums and learned a great deal about the two pipe system/Richardson radiators but the problems keep adding up. The radiators I have either have no bleed or they have been painted over so many times that I can't access it any way. The sight glass is currently empty so I think my auto filler isn't malfunctioning and the steam never makes it to some of the radiators at the end of the run. I'm going to call royal and pay close attention so maybe next time I can remedy the problems myself.

It's time to bring in the pros. Does anyone out there have a good steam heat specialist. The yelps and the fix-stuff sites aren't offering enough info so..... why not ask the people. I can't be the only jclister with an old ass house with two pipe steam heat can I? Any responses appreciated.

Royal is good if you really need outside help, but if you want the best advice online see the steam forum on Heating Help, the expertise is tremendous. Most questions I had when I got my 1st steam system could be answered from the archive.
