AGREE! We did PATH to 33rd, walked 2 blocks to LIRR right to Air train, it was a breeze.

A bit off point but for interest, we took a Uber XL as we had massive luggage from EWR to Grove Street area this past Sunday night, it was about 29$ and like 4AM when we landed, it took the driver about 10 minutes to get to EWR. It was perfect, no beef with any of it.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I am traveling with an infant and luggage so train (which I personally like) is not an option. I was just wondering between the price options of taking Uber, hailing a cab, any shuttle that goes from here to JFK vs. pre-booked taxi service.

It seems Id just go with Uber/Lyft and hope that the surge pricing doesnt kill me. Other options too add to ~$120 or so.

Yeah true. If money were my concern, I'd take PATH to WTC, then the E train to Jamaica, then the Airtrain. I've done that and the transfers are fairly painless.

Agreed, but the guy did point out that they were trying to save money, and even pooh-poohed the idea of an Uber by relating the story of his friend who ended up paying $150 for the same ride some time ago. It seems like he is looking for a way to complete that ride without spending the extra money an Uber ride would entail.

This would be a bit more challenging with an infant, but feasible. I did it this past Sunday:

1. PATH from Newport to 33rd
2. Walk 1 block to 33rd & 7th
3. NYC Airporter bus from that corner to JFK

It was not fast. From Newport to JFK it was about 2 hours (partly due to a lane closure at the Qns Midtown Tunnel that backed up 2nd Ave.)

But it was inexpensive - under $20.

A longer but less hassle way may be to Uber to EWR, and get one of the EWR-JFK shuttles. Probably do if for ~$75.

Anyone has experience going to JFK from DT JC. Train (which I usually free) is not an option because we are family of three including an infant (and luggage) so would love to know what have worked out the best for you, and the $$ - Uber all the way, some shuttle that goes from DTJC(?), pre booked taxi, cab, etc?

We are planning to fly on Sunday evening and not really for reaching the fastest so anyway we can save $ would work. I heard from a friend that his Uber to DTJC from JFK was around $150 the last time he took it (including tolls)!

If your goal is to save money, but avoid many transfers, consider taking the PATH to WTC and then hop on a cab. The ride to JFK is a flat rate of $52, plus applicable tolls, if any. There's also super shuttle, but for two adults it will likely be more expensive. There are the PABT airport buses, but you will save very little compared to the cab, since you would have to take the subway to get to the terminal, and that means two transfers, some walking and more hassle.

OK as a frequent flyer out of JFK, EWR and sometimes LGA, heres what I recommend:

EWR--UBER. If too cheap, PATH to Newark Penn and #62 bus to your specific airport terminal. No need for NJT/Airtrain which is frequently broken. #62 is an urban experience but never had any issues.

JFK--PATH to WTC, up and down to the E Train. Although it takes a few more minutes, you get on when its empty. If you are hungry get your food at the deli just inside the entrance to the Airtrain/Jamaica station. It does not have airport pricing so you can get a good sandwich for $6. IMPORTANT: on weekends and late nights check the mta for changes as often the A and E are undergoing activities that might make you want to take the other one. Also, on the A to the airport be sure you end up on the Far Rockaway train, not the Lefferts Blvd train.

LGA. E Train to Roosevelt/Jackson Heights and UBER/Taxi to LGA. NEVER take the train to 125th and then use the bus, its the worst ever. Alternative is the blue shuttle service, best taken from Grand Central. You can take it from Penn, but you will have to change buses at GCT.

Final Tip: Spend the $85 and get TSA Pre-Check. Good for 5 years and eliminates alot of stress. If you do get it, you have to be sure the number gets on your tickets at the time of purchase.

I concur that the A train to Howard beach is a pain and not too predictable. I once gave up in Brooklyn (they were rerouting people uptown to catch a downtown train, all in the middle of Friday rush hours, genius), and took a cab to JFK to barely make it there. After all the comments below I will give another try to that airport. I avoid it as well as Heathrow like the plague.

Least hassle wins over cost every time for me. That means one of:
1. Fly from EWR
2. Uber
3. Drive and park
4. Zipcar
That way I get to where I'm going ready to work or play.

There are mini vans that do the hotel route around Newport and also from points near JSQ - ask the hotels about their pick up schedule.

The train to the ass end of Queens takes time but cheap as chips and plenty of broke ass nigas using that system.

It's been YEARS since I last took the A train to Howard Beach. It used to be you could take the A train all the way to the end and take a free shuttle from that terminus to JFK. Once the AirTrain was in operation, they took the free shuttle away. But, I hear you can still take a free shuttle from the Long Term parking lots if you are willing to schlep from the A train terminus to the lot.

Your mistake was taking the E train! The PATH to LIRR to AirTrain to JFK trip is consistently between 75 and 90 minutes. The last time I took this trip, I made it to the security line at the Delta terminal, from Grove St, in exactly 90 minutes.

I just did the trip on Monday, Memorial Day....it was a long ass almost 2 hour trip each way from JSQ Path Station to WTC then the E train to Sutphin Blvd., and lastly the Airtrain to Terminal 4. It's a bit faster, but more expensive to take the Path to 33rd and then the LIRR @ Penn Station to the Jamaica stop then the Airtrain.

When my sister or other family member comes to town I have them take the Supershuttle from JFK to The Millenium Hilton across the street from the WTC Path Station which costs $21.78
in either direction.

Call me a wuss, but I have an innate fear of getting lost or confused with connecting to the airtrain or messing with busses. It's been 2 forevers since I lived in NYC and am no longer familiar with mass transit except for subways and some busses. My fear is that I'll miss the flight.

Otoh, I like the idea of taking the PATH to the city and then a taxi. Then again, the fare is fixed to JFK at $52 which means about $60 with tip.

I was hoping to find a convenient shuttle. Anyway, I think I'll book the best flight regardless of airports and hope to figure out the best way to get there without getting lost.

I could take EWR, but that means connecting flights and a minimum of 13 hours from A to B.

I mean, if you have a "fear" of connecting from the PATH train to the LIRR, I don't understand how you live your life on a day to day basis.

Also, if you're worried about missing your flight, trains and subways are far more reliable (even if they take longer on average) than traffic through the East River crossings, which can throw an hour or more randomly into your trip due to an accident, not to mention the BQE.

bodipooh's suggestions are exactly right, although personally, I prefer to grab an $8 Uber at the Roosevelt St stop to avoid dealing with the Q70, but that's just due to an illogical aversion to buses.

JcDevil's suggestion to use Uber (instead of the Q70) is definitely spot on. I have never done it because 1) there's usually a Q70 waiting or loading when you come out of the station, 2) it is a free transfer from the subway to the bus, and 3) the time saved by taking Uber is likely around 5 minutes, depending on wait times for pick up. For someone wanting to save money and time, as the OP originally stated as his goal, the "all mass transit" solutions I posted are incredibly effective, reliable, and affordable.

The remark about the risk of delays and traffic on East River crossings and the BQE are also equally spot on. Traffic there can be risky and unpredictable.

Interestingly, some Q70 busses get on the highway, while others take the local roads. I have never bothered to look up the difference in route designations, but I believe the highway route is the Q70x. Regardless, it really doesn't make much of a difference.
