A memorial event and celebration of Dale's life will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2016 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at Grace Church Van Vorst at 2nd & Erie Streets (enter through red doors on 2nd Street) in the city he loved, Jersey City. We invite all of Dale's friends to come and tell some stories, listen to music, and enjoy each others' company, as he would have wanted.

Dale Hardman, 64, Jersey City activist, poet, writer and inspiration

Ron Zeitlinger
Jersey Journal
May 07, 2016

Dale Hardman lost one leg to illness, then the other. But that never stopped the popular Jersey City activist from pursuing his passions -- whether it be the arts, music, sports or politics.

Hardman, 64, died on May 3. He worked for the Jersey City Recreation Department, but he was not the type of man to ever be defined by his job. He was a poet, writer, musician, story-teller and and activist on both political and civil justice fronts.

"My friend @BrightMoment one of the great community activists in JC," Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop tweeted after learning of Hardman's death. Hardman was an early supporter of the mayor, when Fulop won a City Council seat in 2009.

Ward E Councilwoman Candice Osborne wasn't sure where she first met Hardman, because he was involved in so many causes.

"He was very political," said Osborne, meaning it in a good way, "because he cared a lot and he loved Jersey City. Culturally he also supported so many things -- music, the arts."

Hardman also was one of the founders of the No Gas Pipeline group that tried valiantly to stop the Spectra pipeline from passing through Jersey City.

His efforts failed, but he gained friends and admirers for the tireless fight.

His "efforts against the Spectra pipeline were admirable. ... no matter his health challenges, he always looked forward and that inspired me," Maryanne Kelleher, a supervisor in the city's Department of Health and Human Services, said in a Facebook tribute.

But mostly, Hardman was a friend to all he met, sharing his wit, experiences and wisdom; and an inspiration in the way he didn't let his health issues stop him from the next new experience.

"I was just in awe of his knowledge and passion for life," Gina Ho said in a Facebook post. "He had so many health issues, was a double amputee but nothing kept him down.

"I know you spent way too much time in hospital with a body that couldn't keep up with your spirit, but you made a huge imprint on life and with everyone you met, Dale."

Funeral arrangements have not been made yet, but Osborne said Hardman's friends and colleagues are organizing a memorial service for the man who went by the social media moniker of BrightMoment.
