John has not led the tour for the last three years, though we imagine he will take a more active part again shortly. He has been and remains essential to JCLC.

We've been lucky to have Patrick Shahloub from NJCU join us. He's a fantastic resource.

By the way, Jennifer Furlong and Kevin Berland are historians.

There are always people who are or were from the neighborhood and they are always happy to give background information.

I agree wholeheartedly. I've taken the Greenville and Heights tours, learning quite a bit.

Lafayette History Tour
Sunday, May 15th at 11am

The history of Lafayette is largely untold. While Washington Irving?s legendary visit to the Van Horne?s ?House of the Four Chimneys? is immortalized in such classics as ?A History of New York? and ?Wolfert?s Roost,? Lafayette remains largely forgotten in the annals of Jersey City history. How can a nearly 400-year-old neighborhood remain so overlooked by scholars?

As we walk through the streets of Lafayette under the shadows of landmarks past and present, its fascinating origins emerge, revealing themselves in bricks and cornerstones, steeples and smokestacks, underground waterways. The voices of centuries-old inhabitants emerge, reminding us about transatlantic voyages, Indian villages, ancient trails, Dutch settlements, British Colonials, African-American burial grounds, railroads, ferries, industries, local legends.

Continuing onward, observing more, on our tour we become the historian, capturing what had come before, writing what has never been written, sharing our knowledge.

Join Jennifer Furlong, Kevin Berland, and Rebecca Shapiro on a fascinating tour and discussion of Lafayette?s rich history.
