They are not going to open until next summer, according to this:

I'm really surprised that there are no development plans for the Old Colony plaza, as there are with the Metro Plaza. It's an outdated, suburban style strip mall, entirely out of place with its urban surroundings and it is prime real estate, on the periphery of the Van Vorst Park neighborhood.

Will Old Colony as it stands today exist in 15 years? My guess would be no.

1. Resale value.
2. Given A&P/Pathmark went bankrupt - it wasn't their money.
3. Mightn't have even owned the facade nor building.

Take your pick.

That mall is all the more depressing without Pathmark foot traffic. Still can't understand why they bothered to redo the facade to only shut it down less than a year later.

Thanks for posting a link to that flyer. If that flyer is indicative of what to expect at the new JC Acme, this will be a total WIN. That A&P was atrociously overpriced, and their seafood was very suspect looking. I never saw a fish fillet in there that I would feel safe bringing back home. Good riddance.

As for the Pathmark on Grand, I know I am in the minority in saying this, but I thought it was good enough. I did most of my shopping there for years and thought their stock had gotten better over the years and their prices were decent compared to other options in the area. The Shoprite on Marin Blvd definitely has the best prices, but... it is a complete shit show, especially during the first few days of the month.

The Pathmark was still over priced, the produce sometimes was over ripe, moldy or rotten. The meat was awful, seafood selection was also terrible. The closing of both of these supermarkets just shows they couldn't compete. Shoprite becomes the mess it is because of the pricing. They are cheaper, double coupons, free turkeys, etc.

Er, the supermarket on Grand was a Pathmark, not an A&P . . .

You're confusing the supermarkets. The Pathmark on Grand has been bought by a Asian market chain.

Yes, I talked to them and they will re-open on Wed as Acme. A&P just closed down there on Sunday.

So it's not becoming an Asian supermarket?

I also wrote them, just recieved a reply. Looks like they will be arriving for sure.

They don't yet know when they will open; follow their social media:

" Thank you for contacting 99 Ranch Market. Unfortunately, we haven't got any further information regarding to our store in Jersey City. Please stay close to our social media platforms or official website. As soon as we have a fix opening date or location of our new branch, we will update the information. "

A little giddy here for some not-gross produce nearby... Can a California grocery chain raise the bar?

West Coast Asian food store is opening -- bought the location. This will be their first East Coast store -- they work with Amazon Prime on the west coast

http://www.99ranch.com/

You can ask the new market when they will open -- and let them know what you want/need from them. Here is their email:

Pathmark isn't perfect, but this is a big loss for a lot of neighborhoods...

This means that Shoprite will get even more crowded, which sucks.

I regularly use that location. The stock in house has been diminishing with regularity. I was wondering when the last day would come.

rickels???? you really know how to make a person feel young? I have heard that name before but never realized there was one so close.

No Trader Joe's -- but the Stop N Shop in Bayonne is not bad -- I would take it any day over either A&P or Pathmark

There used to be ??.

-Acme on Five Corners where the Hudson City Bank Drive Thru is now.
-Shop Rite in Bergen Square across from PS #11 where C-Town Supermarket is now.
-Shop Rite on Sip and Romaine Avenue where Twin City Supermarket is now.
-A&P next to the State Theater (ripped down for an ugly cold apartment bldg.) where Dollar Dream is now.
-Many little A&P?s scattered all over the JC neighborhoods.. I?m talking bodega/deli sized stores.

-Shop Rite down in the Hudson Mall area after Two Guys was divided into many stores and where Loew?s /Party City are now. Two Guys was ripped down and Loew?s was built new but I am pretty sure PC Richards and Party City were part of the original L-shaped Two Guys building.

This is how the area looked when it was Two Guys ?the future Shop Rite was on the right. The "new" Loew's would be where the Grand Opening sign is hanging. (cool picture)

Albertson's I've been to on west coast have been fine, but then I've got no problem with Shoprite as a midmarket store. Still would have preferred a Fairway, they've got great cheese.

With the 100 storey condos going up in Journal Square, maybe the area will finally get a decent supermarket.
