Sounds like a good move to me. I bought a coffee from Carrino once (meh) and I think my wife ate at the Osteria twice. I don't think we are outside the DTJC norm, so it doesn't seem unreasonable that Carrino Provisions didn't do well here. It was a good idea, but probably wasn't right for the area, even regardless of the execution.

While Bell + Gray doesn't sound like it is breaking new ground for our area, it does seem more likely to be a success, and it could still be a good addition to the neighborhood. While JCListers might prefer more bars without televisions and fewer restaurants serving burgers and slightly elevated American bar food, the fact is that those kinds of places are successful in JC and elsewhere. All it takes is one walk around downtown to find a dinner table on a Friday night to realize there is still demand for more of this kind of restaurant. If the food at B+G is up to Dale Talde's standards and it has a cool/fun environment, I'm sure it will do well.

OK, JClist, the new Carrino spot will be called Bell + Gray: https://instagram.com/bellandgray/

One glimmer of hope (for me at least) is the TVs seem to be removed. Hopefully not just during the construction.

Actually, that writeup sounds like exactly what I was hoping for - an expanded (bigger space), JC-specific version of Pork Slope, which is awesome.

Why take the risk for a bunch of whiny, cheap, self-entitled yuppies.

Although I think a large part of the fail associated with the market was their half-ass execution. It never seemed like they were fully committed.

Funny, and a little bit too true, but speaking as someone who shopped there, it really was an execution issue. Expensive, excellent, with good service is completely fine - expensive, mediocre, with lazy, un-knowledgeable people behind the counters is a different story.

Here's hoping that they use the extra space to make something awesome, TVs notwithstanding - I would kill for a JC version of Pork Slope, with an expanded menu, and I think it would do quite well, here.

my girlfriend tried to set up a small work event (10-12 people) at carino's... they asked for $150 per head (not including drinks) and then said there would also be a $25 per person entrance fee.

entrance. fee.

wtf is an entrance fee?

Admittedly, I only shopped there for burgers and sausage for BBQs, and even then, shelling out $30 for six burgers stung a little bit, but I'm still sad to see the place go.

Wish them luck with the sports bar, but I'll still be watching my games at O'Hara's.

Just to quibble a bit, I think the main point of why it failed wasn't merely the price - which was high - but the price coupled with the very few options and the up-and-down quality. Not sure that really fits the narrative you described, mainly because they brought it on themselves. You can't charge a premium and give less.

Cuore, for example, seems to be doing alright, despite charging double Raffetto's, because so far it seems the quality is consistent enough that people are willing to pay that for the convenience.

You are so right! I *am* an idiot! Somehow I clicked onto a previous page, thought the last posting was still speculating as to whether or not Carrino Provisions was going away.

Here's the reason. They own the space. You don't. I don't like it either but it is not my right to tell others what to do with their own property.

If you want to come up with a better concept, go right ahead, get your own space, and take the necessary actions.

What gets me is, the space is cool looking and industrial. It's a nice spot. A sports bar? Seems so out of place. Especially with the fancyish Italian restaurant. Like, what?

Everything in Jersey City is a sports bar. You want to watch a game at a bar, you're in luck, there are a lot of options. The problem is, sports bars attract a bunch of loud, brash bros wearing oversized football jerseys. This is precisely what ruined the nightlife scene of Hoboken. Like 3rd St Hats said, you cater to the lowest denominator of people, and you attract caveman bros.

I'm a sports fan by the way.

I'm not encouraged or impressed by the direction of Jersey City's nightlife. Still moderately hopeful for The Archer, and the spot across the street from it. And maybe White Star's new spot on Grove.

Seriously these guys just lost major points as restauranteurs too. A sports bar attached to an Italian eatery...we might as well be in the suburbs.

Complete lack of innovation and vision. Maybe JC is actually becoming Hoboken.

I agree with you in that who wants another TV sportsbar? However, this is clearly what people are demanding. The original concept didn't bring in enough business because not enough people wanted it.

So instead of blaming the owners for a "lack of vision," blame fellow people who continue to patronize the unoriginal TV sportsbars, making them profitable.

My issue is with the owners going with the easiest out and pandering to the lowest common denominator. We don't need another bar playing the game on 5 70" tv's and we certainly don't need any more people hanging out on the street in front of the building.

I understand that the market was struggling as implemented; I live right across the street. It had some overpriced items but some that were actually of decent quality. Overall it was too small a variety in too large a space. But it wasn't like it failed overnight either, this has been 6 months in the making. Plenty of time to come up with a better concept than the one they opted for.

That being said, I see no reason why they couldn't have expanded the footprint of the Osteria and cut the size of the market. They already have a bar in the Osteria, a bar in Talde, and a bar in the basement.

HopsScotch is solid. PJ Ryan's is very good. Zeppelin Hall would be another place. I don't know if South House has TVs.

Agreed, it made no sense. Went in there once and bought super expensive dessert.

Wasn't impressed and wondered how they could make a large space like that profitable.

Still would like to try restaurant in back, heard good things about it.

The market wasn't making any sense to me anyway - way too big a space for way too little stuff. It's a really nice spot, so they (or somebody) will turn it around.
