This article focuses on the salary raise. Does anybody know where you can read the entire contract so that we can see what teachers actually get in terms of salary and benefits?

The media rarely likes to discuss the "other side" in these kind of negotiations. Typically teacher benefits far exceed most other industries. It's either get paid on salary or on benefits - hard to get both, but the unions always try. Tenure, 3 months of paid time off, health insurance, pension, etc.

It basically translates as losing money signing a new deal...

Teacher's union conflict headlines upcoming Jersey City Council Meeting

By Ben Shapiro | The Jersey Journal The Jersey Journal
June 23, 2015 at  5:30 PM

JERSEY CITY — A relative quiet City Council meeting could get raucous tomorrow, with the local teachers union saying they will descend on City Hall to protest what it says are unauthorized changes to a new teachers contract.

After more than two years of contentious negotiations, a resounding majority of teachers voted to approve a new, four-year contract earlier this month. But now, according to Jersey City Education Association President Ron Greco, the board of education is attempting to alter the terms of the pact.

In a letter to the council, Schools Superintendent Marcia V. Lyles called the proposed changes, which involve scheduling of high school teachers, her managerial prerogative, and do not need to be negotiated with the union.

Jersey City teachers overwhelmingly vote 'yes' on contract

By Laura Herzog | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com The Jersey Journal
June 04, 2015 at 11:00 AM

JERSEY CITY -- After more than two years in limbo, Jersey City teachers accepted a contract agreement on Wednesday night that most union members appear to be happy about.

According to Jersey City Education Association President Ron Greco, "the main battle" during the contentious negotiations was to maintain the contract's historic language, which accounts for teachers' rights. Another goal was to make sure teachers received raises, after going without raises since 2012, he said.

In the end, the 4,000-member union's teachers -- 3,300 district employees -- were presented with a contract Greco was pleased with.

The contract will represent Sept. 1, 2013 through Aug. 31, 2017, he said, and include pay raises "around 2.7 percent."

Jersey City educators said 2,148 teachers voted "yes" and only 139 voted "no" after the votes were tallied when polls closed at 6 p.m. The union's secretaries, para-professionals and non-certified administrators will vote on their agreements later this week, Greco said.
