You're right, I misread your Commissioner title vs the Exec.

But after ranking dead last, CME vaults to win the bid after getting extra 'points' after the interview process.

How are the bids weighed? What is a 'point'? Is this a standard method of awarding bids? How much does a 'presentation' count vis a vis the dollar amount bid?

And if CME was so impressive, how did they underbid the contract so much they came back and asked for double the amount they contracted for?

You should re-read the article.

For AC he just announced that NJ will not enforce a federal law against sports gambling. Obviously intended to help the casinos.

Well, he could have passed the law put on his desk last year which would have made sports gambling in NJ legal. Instead, he vetoed it and now he claims that the casinos can go ahead after several of them have closed their doors. That?s leadership! (PS: It is still illegal in NJ because he vetoed the bill so federal prosecutors certainly can go after casinos.)

Yes. He gave a boatload of tax credits to pharmaceutical companies that chose to split off branches into subsidiaries (http://finance.yahoo.com/news/nj-gove ... tie-visits-140000318.html). Woohoo! He?s awesome!

Young people moved to Brooklyn and Harlem?

I said the two weren't equivalent. You can keep trying though...

I'm stealing the ball away from the "big boys", so the rest of us can get back to the game - if anyone else is still paying attention, that is...

Here is one of many articles I found researching the issue of why NJ's economy is lagging compared to surrounding states: https://www08.wellsfargomedia.com/down ... omic_Outlook_06162014.pdf

It's concise and probably oversimplifies some of the conditions, but it avoids editorializing and reminds of us key areas the Governor could be proposing initiatives to enhance NJ's economic picture:
- reinforcing key industries, such has big pharma
- investing in tourism overall, in particular rebuilding AC
- encouraging more young people to move here (hint to the naysayers - young people, while I am not one I have lots of younger friends and they don't care about taxes! They care about amenities, opportunities, being part of the growing urbanization of American life - all of which our area of NJ has to offer a lot of).

So, to recap and rebut the original post - what has Christie been doing to build NJ's assets?

That happens. You set an hourly rate. You quote how much you think it will take. It is underestimated. I've done it before, just as every other law firm on the planet. Even buying my house, the lawyer gave one rate and it came out higher due to "additional unexpected costs".

Yes, and it's just a coinky dinkee that the MUA head was Fulop's campaign manager, that CME came in last for the contract until there was a 'do-over' set of interviews with the bidders that shifted them to win it with unspecified criteria, and that CME staff had donated almost $40,000 to Fulop's campaign!

I don't think there is any denying why this firm received the contract.

I fail to see what this has to do with Samson and his morally bankrupt actions. Are you trying to use this as some means to justify Samson's actions or make them legitimate?

I'm sorry, but you'll need to actually explain how a law firm doing what it was hired to do is the same as Samson dropping the rent that the PA receives for property after Samson receives money from the renter.

At least he was able to save us more than a billion dollars by using PA money to fix the Pulaski Skyway in a tit-for-tat with NY over money going to the Freedom Tower.

The Freedom Tower, while overwrought with expenses is at least owned and operated by the PA as opposed to the Pulaski. I see it as highly possible/probable that someone else running the PA may come in looking for that money back. We?ll see.

You can wager all you want. Obama, like Christie, was the better options of what was supplied. He?s not lived up to the billing. I don?t think there is much that any president can do in regards to the national economy. Much of the problem comes from the idea that lessoning the tax burdens on companies will increase their ability to hire. Since this is a Republican meme and Obama has pushed forward with it to little avail, I fail to see how anyone would have done better.

Ultimately, we don?t have menial jobs paying decent wages any longer. Thus, the divide grows.

You seem intent on blaming this on the president. I don?t blame Bush for the crap economy he left behind, either. We live in a global market where shipping from China is about as costly as shipping from Idaho. Thus, why hire the Idahoan when you can hire the Chinese?

The low end jobs have become service jobs. These are stock workers, check-out clerks, waiters/waitresses, garbagemen/women, bus drivers, etc and there are only so many of these jobs available.

Your point? While working to reform the PA will they also double dip and take money to lobby the PA and then pass changes in the PA so that the companies which they lobbied for get sweetheart deals?

No matter how you dice it, if the PA is saying that they need to raise the costs of fares then they shouldn?t be lower the rent of property from $1m to $1.00. That is what Samson did because his firm was paid to lobby for a parking lot.

Should Fulop become elected and should Fulop hire his buddies and should his buddies act as corruptly as Samson has, I will feel the same way. But, that?s a lot of ?should? and all we have to go on is what Christie?s good buddy Samson is doing and it shouldn?t be acceptable to anyone.

That?s a strawman. Fulop isn?t governor and while it is possible that Lesniak?s law firm might get business, it is possible they?ll be less corrupt than Samson. Regardless, it is pure conjecture.

No. She would have appointed somebody else to rob the Port Authority. Can we stop pretending that one party is more virtuous (or less criminal) than the other? NJ politics is rotten. Period. Democrats do it. Republicans do it. And because of the insane amount of local government here and the desire to preserve "home rule" at all costs, it will never change. Ever.

Nobody is saying she'd be more virtuous. But is it not possible to fathom the fact that the prior governors were capable of not hiring completely morally bankrupt individuals like "General" Samson?

Buono sucked and she was a sacrificial lamb as the Democrats didn't feel like challenging the human version of Audrey II. It certainly didn't help that Corzine was a criminal, thus opening the door for someone that was basically gifted everything in life.

It should be no surprise that the most densely populated state in the union is suffering the Obama economy so badly. Of course, if all the previous administrations had put any money into the pension fund that Christie has been putting into, and the cozy relationship the unions (Corzine/Katz, anyone?) have had with politicians didn't cost so much, we'd be solvent.

And when Christie tries to remedy the situation without making our crippling level of taxation (and killing the economy further) worse he gets heat.

Go figure.

It's been proven time after time after time that just about every other state is doing better economically than NJ. Yet, somehow, Jaba the Governor remains blameless from you. Just face it, the guy sucks at his job.

Jabba? Fat jokes?? Really??? I'm sure you'd laugh if I talked about Madame Hilary's ass in a pantsuit, right?

Yeah, between the courts costing NJ billions of dollars a year in lost revenue directed to Abbott schools, the Obama economy forcing thousands out of work in Atlantic City (who has money to gamble?), gasoline costing NJ taxpayers about TWICE what it was when Obama took office (imagine how better our economy would be if you had the equivalent of not paying for every other fill up!), the damage caused by the largest national disaster EVER IN THE HISTORY OF NJ (Christie's fault??), our Democratic Senators inability over decades to bring back our tax dollars from Washington (always last or next to last in the nation), I got it.

Blame Christie. He took the Lindbergh baby too I heard!

Does her ass turn you on? Not my thing, but hey, it's your fetish!

I never said it was all Christie's fault. However, it is a curious coincidence that NY, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, etc have all been able to rebound better than New Jersey in this "awful Obama depression" as you like to call it.

By the way, is it intentional on your fault that you get to blame Obama for NJ's failures but when all of those states around us are somehow able to make do, yet NJ can't, you refuse to point any fingers at our resident blob...

If I was half as bad at my job that he is at his, I'd have been fired.

It should be no surprise that the most densely populated state in the union is suffering the Obama economy so badly.

As if New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) didn?t have enough troubles, in the spring, political conditions for the scandal-plagued governor deteriorated further. New Jersey?s debt was downgraded for the sixth time since Christie took office, right around the time the governor scrapped his state pension-reform plan, once considered Christie?s ?landmark achievement.?

Late Friday afternoon, the news got just a little worse.
Wall Street analysts at Fitch Ratings today downgraded New Jersey?s bond rating for the second time this year, citing the state?s poor economic performance, Gov. Chris Christie?s rosy revenue forecasts ? which failed to materialize ? and his decision to plug the resulting budget gap by cutting $2.4 billion in funding for the state?s strained pension system. [?]

?New Jersey?s economic performance continues to lag that of the nation and a multitude of long-term spending demands are expected to prolong the achievement of sound financial operations,? the analysts wrote. Fitch is keeping a ?negative outlook? for New Jersey, meaning an upgrade of the state?s credit rating is unlikely.
This was the second time Fitch downgraded New Jersey?s debt, but the Garden State faced similar judgments from Moody?s Investors Service and Standard & Poor?s. All told, since Christie took office, New Jersey has faced seven downgrades ? and as the Star-Ledger?s report noted, that?s ?the most under any New Jersey governor.?

Of course, Christie has only been in office five years. Presumably he still has time to break his own record.

What?s more, as we talked about in May, it?s hard to even imagine what Christie will say when he launches his presidential campaign about his only experience in elected office. He can?t talk about his management skills, or his jobs record, or his fiscal record, or his legislative accomplishments ? and bluster does not a national campaign make.
