Good idea about the pothole warnings. I hope the folks who fell are okay.

There turned out to be lots of spots for day-of registration. I got there early, but it looked as though people were still able to register up until close to 11 a.m.

Great ride. Except for some bottlenecks on the route, everything seemed to be very smoothly organized. The police were very helpful, and the motorcycle cops let off fewer sirens than last year, which was much appreciated.

One suggestion: The ride tended to slow down a lot on narrower streets like Grand and Palisade, where only one lane was available for cyclists. If streets could be blocked off entirely so that the bicyclists could use two lanes, the ride would be safer (less crowded) and faster?which might actually mean less inconvenience for motorists, since the street could be reopened sooner.

Fantastic performances by the Defending Champions and the Ones and Nines!

Is it normal for people to crash or was it made worse by potholes? I saw 3 accidents where people just face planted. On grove street I went into a huge hole that knocked a screw out of my back storage support. I have a cruiser and I ride down broadway from WTC everyday on a citibike so I'm good at not falling BC of potholes. Hurt my arms and wrists terribly.

Does anyone know if the girl who was face down on grove st by Montgomery was okay? She looked like she was really hurt.

The potholes were terrible!

Several groups I rode with would announce 'hole' loudly when they came upon a sizeable pothole.

As for water, I brought two bottles for the ride and it was plenty. And there were people in Greenville giving out water.

Yeah, I got warned by others before about 80% of the potholes I encountered (and passed the warning on myself whenever I saw one). With 1300 riders you'll inevitably have a few people have mechanical issues, fall, etc. - but maybe a "code of etiquette" for riders including pothole/obstacle warnings would be good in the future.

What a great day!

I helped with registration and marshaled during the ride - and was really impressed with the work the Bike JC folks did to improve this event. Rider check-in was much smoother than previous years, and it was great having the Grove St Bikes guys there to help pump tires & deal with mechanicals before the start.

Thanks to everyone who came out and did the ride, and congratulations and thank you to the hard-working people at Bike JC for putting it together.

Was there, it was great! We were "corralled" at some intersections, the ride was generally smooth and people attentive to others in need. The party at Exchange Place was nice, next time, I just hope for more food options. Will definitely redo it again next year.

Huge turnout, they said 1300 people signed up. It was quite well organized for the riders, with cops on motorcycles holding traffic at intersections. I think the fact that Fulop took part helped!

It's starting now, with police motorcade.

There is no police at the intersection. Cars cannot go.

The group took ten minutes to leave Exchange Place.

Is there a route map? I'd like to know what streets will be closed to avoid them later when I have to travel.

The BikeJC and City of Jersey City websites are terrible - no map of the route - great work!

Tires checked for correct pressure! Water bottles frozen, ready to go! Iphone charged for Strava recording! Yogurt/granola/strawberry parfait down the hatch for breakfast! Energy bar, washrag, and sunscreen packed! Should be a fun day.

So the answer is get down there early and hope for the best. They may be able to squeeze you in, if not come back at 1 pm for the festival featuring the bikes, bands, and beers...along with some great food options as well.

Answer-sort of. From their FB page

Due to the large number of advance signups (thank you!), we will be cutting off registration for our 5th Annual Jersey City Ward Tour tomorrow, Thurs. June 5, at 8 p.m.; we will also have only VERY limited day-of registration on Sunday morning at Exchange Place, on a first-come-first-served basis. (So don't count on it.)

Okay, I see from Bike JC's FaceBook page that registration closed on Thursday. https://www.facebook.com/bikeJC

Bummer! I wish there had been more advance notice. I follow Bike JC on FB but this notice never showed up in my feed.

We prepare for some growth every year, but with over 1,100 riders already registered this year (Woooo!), we need to set these cutoffs to ensure a safe and enjoyable ride."

Bike bump! The big bike tour of JC is a week from tomorrow. Are you registered yet?

From our Facebook page:

Come ride all over this town with us! Bike JC's 5th Annual Jersey City Ward Tour will roll out of Exchange Place at 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 8, taking you and about a thousand of our closest friends on a 15-mile tour of our great city (and passing through all of its political wards).

When the tour ends back at Exchange Place around 1 p.m., you can enjoy our equally great finish festival there all afternoon, featuring live music, food and drinks, and local vendors and community groups, all on our scenic waterfront.

Registration is free, with a suggested donation of $5 to aid our year-round efforts to improve, promote and teach safe and fun cycling in Jersey City.

More About the Ride

The Tour starts downtown at Exchange Place and travels up Montgomery to Grand Street, heading south on Garfield Ave in Greenville, where it hooks back north via Danforth and Mallory to Lincoln Park. Exiting the park, it heads north along Kennedy Blvd to North Street and Palisade Avenues in the Heights, eventually coming down Newark Ave and Seventh Street to end up back downtown and finish at Exchange Place.

We ride on streets (or sometimes on one side of a street) that are closed to motor-vehicle traffic by the Jersey City Police Department. Officers on bikes and motorcycles will escort us throughout the ride.

Riders must be age 10 or older, and must wear helmets.

All riders must also be able to maintain a pace of approximately 10 mph for 15 miles. This is a fairly relaxed pace, and we do take some breaks to allow for smooth traffic control, including one long break at roughly the halfway point in Lincoln Park.

The tour rolls at 11 a.m., but you will need to pick up an official tour bib before the start; we will announce details about how to do that soon.

Bike JC is a citizen-based advocacy organization that aims to make Jersey City streets welcoming for bicyclists, by promoting bike-friendly policies, including bike lanes; bicycle education; and traffic law enforcement.

Lineup of musical acts at the Festival:
1:00 Sandra Small and the Smallworld Band
2:00 The Defending Champions
3:00 The One and Nines
NEW: MotorFunker spins between gears?expect to get derailed!

Food vendors will include:
Mordi's Food Truck
Two Boots Jersey City
Cocoa Bakery

Beer by:
White Star Bar

We hope to see you June 8! With bike lanes, a bike share system and other cycling amenities rolling out in Jersey City, this is shaping up to be a banner year for biking. Come celebrate with us!

Check out the great lineup of bands playing the finish-line festival at our big bike tour!

When you ride back to Exchange Place Sunday, June 8, after our 15-mile Jersey City Ward Tour, you'll hear:

1:00: Sandra Small and the Smallworld Band -- "a sound infusion of genres from every era and flavor of contemporary classic funk, jazz and rock"

2:00: The Defending Champions -- who "blend reggae, ska and rock together for a delicious, danceable sound that is undeniably groovy, funky and jammy"

3:00: The Ones and Nines -- "straight, no chaser rock & roll, served well above room temperature"

Many thanks to tour sponsor and impressario extraordinaire Rock-it Docket for putting together this tight musical peloton!

Hey, bikey folk:

Many more details coming soon!
