Throwaway packaging is not much of an issue... in fact when used with food products, it actually reduces waste. Some years back, a study was done on the amount of trash rich America produced per capita compared to Mexico. Mexico was higher in part because good packaging prevents / reduces breakage and spoilage.

Between Trash & Recycling collection on a daily basis Jersey City has over 60,000 Household Units being collected each night. If the 5 complaints a night are posted this translates into .000083 % complaint to household serviced percentage. The amount of complaints that are being posted are isolated, sporadic and limited to recycling issues. Why would an entire block be collected except for one or two homes? Perhaps, items were put out for collection after collection trucks passed already? Or perhaps, the presentation of collection items (Recyclables) are not clear for the collectors to determine at night.

I have witnessed a much cleaner Jersey City after collection days. Outstanding job is being done by the city collectors. Keep up the good work!

JCIA has always had a no plastic bag policy that isn't enforced.. most of the time. I try not to put out cans because they keep getting stolen.

I would love the new administration to do a full audit of the city's recycling program, as I suspect it may be costing us more $$ than it saves.

Aluminum had always been valuable. Paper is only because we currently export it to China and India. If China's economy goes South (which I think it will), we could end up where we were in the early 90's: Loads of recycled paper and cardboard without a market. Glass is of questionable value and so is the recycled plastic.

There is also the cost of sending three collection groups instead of one (general trash, paper, plastic/glass/cans). Would it be worth it to invest in a full trash separation system and just do one pickup? Combining everything into one pickup would save in labor and fuel costs.

Eddy current separators are able to take out the valuable non-ferrous metals from the waste stream. If the prices are poor for paper and plastic, they can be used to make electricity instead. Glass can crushed and land filled.

Note: paper recycling doesn't save trees. Years back, a coworker of mine purchased some fallow farm land down in Virginia. Kimberly Clarke paid him to grow trees to provide a future paper supply for their mills. He was thrilled over the arrangement.

I always put my recyclables in a clear plastic garbage bag and haven't had any trouble. Have the guidelines changed?

I would like to see someone authorized to give summons ride with the trash collectors some nights and give out summons to owners who don't do it correctly.

It is much worse where I am in the heights. My trash is infrequently picked up, if at all. I've had two bags of recyclables on the curb for weeks. Anyone know the number to call to register a complaint. I'm very unhappy about this.

They left my paper recycling behind this week. It was in a blue plastic container with the recycling symbol on it.

We've been bagging our trash/recyclables the same way for the last 8 years with no pickup problems, and the past 2 or 3 weeks every pickup they decide to leave a different bag.
It's not just us either, all down the street the next morning I notice random bags left or bins left full.

yup. worse in the Erie - Manilla - Bay - 3rd radius, and we honestly didn't think it could get any worse.

I bring home an empty carton that formerly held 10 reams of copier paper. When the carton is full I place the whole thing at the curb for disposal. On windy days I put 2 pcs of duct tape across the top so the paper doesn't blow around the street.

I notice that some people don't put the recycling out properly. Here are the rules.

The Jersey City Incinerator Authority implemented a curbside recycling program in 1985. Currently the Authority requires residents to recycle all mixed newspaper in addition to magazines, junk mail, office paper, telephone books, cardboard boxes, corrugated boxes and laundry detergent boxes.

Such materials must be tied or placed in recycling containers and placed curbside no earlier than 7:00 PM the night before your scheduled collection day.

Co-mingled materials which include glass bottles, aluminum cans, metal cans, milk cartons, drink boxes, water containers, food containers, household cleaner containers, laundry detergent bottles, shampoo bottles, and other related plastic containers can all be placed curbside in a recycling container no earlier than 7:00 PM the night before your scheduled collection day.

Recyclables must not be placed out for collection in plastic bags. Placing such in plastic bags seriously hinders our recycling process. Recyclables shall be placed in large plastic containers.

It has happened plenty of times in the past. Recently I have called to make a complaint due to them missing my paper pickups 2 weeks in a row. They will come later in the day though to pick up but its just aggravating. Also, a couple of houses down had bottles broken all over the street. They came down and cleaned that up after a few calls.
I pay 10k in annual property taxes. I do expect sanitation to get it right and keep our streets clean.... and on the flip side.... issue tickets to homeowners who dont care about upkeep.

It was a disaster last week, but this most recent one was OK. A bunch of pictures of the mess were taken and given to the city. They did come back and cleanup later in the day because of the complaints so hopefully they'll start monitoring it a bit better.

When it sucks let the city know.

Excellent so far, they come earlier than the last contractors so they haven't been waking us up at 1:45 in the morning or not showing up until the next morning. No garbage has been left behind. No complaints here.

Same here. Under the old contract at least 1 or 2 houses on my block were skipped every pickup, that's not happening anymore, so far. They are also a lot quieter.

I still think the biggest problem with garbage pickup is how poorly people put their stuff at the curb - multiple small grocery bags, paper poorly secured, etc.
