You guys are way cheaper than my shrink.

RECAP:

Setting: Bar at ZACK'S

Me: "Blah blah blah blah interesting observation about Gilded Age architecture, Newport R.I./The Breakers/whorehouses near Washington Square Park"

Him: "blah blah blah blah my kids/I love Newport/NYC is expensive"

Me: "Blah blah blah"

Him: "You seem very sweet. I guess I should tell you I'm married".

Me: "Goodbye".

As the popular Internet meme goes: pics or it didn't happen!

It all seriously, though. I hope it goes well. You seem like a hopeful romantic, which is A OK in my book. And, apparently, you have several others in this board rooting for you.

We're meeting at Zach's today after work. I will keep you all posted. I don't think I would know what to do on a date if I didn't consult with this board--this is the third one you guys have helped me plan, LOL.

Funny. I was wondering, too. Hopefully, this time around the guy didn't lie and turned out to be close in age to her.

So, Jessica, fill us in!

Tomorrow evening will be perfect for a stroll along the Hoboken waterfront.

My experience is mostly at the upstairs dining room getting their great early bird prix fix, but the Brass Rail seems a pretty decent place. I don't know what their policy is on just drinks up there though.

Teak is pretty, but definately more of a fist-pumper crowd.

Anything right near the PATH is not the best place for you if you like Union Hall in BK.

Louise & Jerry's is similar to a laid back BK bar (before Williamsburg went bonkers).

DCs in the back is the best Dive.

As someone else said - you'd probably like Pilsner House, but it is hard to get to....

Elysian is nice.

Scratch Bin 14 and any place with tapas for that matter. Tapas is Spanish for "Very disproportionately priced food", loosely translated. Not worth it IMHO.

I feel your pain, Jess. Try Bin 14 on the West side of Washington. The Mgr is "a friend of ours." ;)

He's new to the city and definitely new to NJ but he has a meeting in Hoboken so that's why he's asking to meet there and putting the onus on me. Normally I'd mind. I have some go-to bars in the city, so I'm covered there, but I am a neophyte on this side of the river. I'll check out these suggestions, thanks, and I will go to the Hoboken website as well.

Elysian Cafe on Washington is pretty good and less douchy than most Hoboken spots.

Teak is definitely a stereotypical douchy Hoboken spot. Fist pumping crowd. Avoid this.

You could always hit Trinity on Frank Sinatra Blvd. Right on the water, nice views.

A slight pain to get to, but the Pilsner Haus in the Northwest corner of Hoboken is pretty sweet spot.

Havana is pretty laid back and has half price mojitos for happy hour, located on Newark St at Hudson very close to the PATH.

I almost forgot. Check out this website:

http://hoboken411.com

They have a decent grasp of the going ons in Hoboken.....and they have a directory of bars and restaurants and many reviews.

Yeah, I'm still of the mind that the guy should choose the first date place, or at least get consensus on it with the date.

I'd say go to Teak, only because it is a pretty place. However, if you're looking for a place like you showed in your post, the city might be a better option. Rattle & Hum comes to mind.

Not sure how much time you have but why not get a quick cup of coffee at Choco Pain........and then walk about Washington Street. This way if the date isn't going so well...you can end it.....or if things are going smoothly, you'll find a bar that might appeal to the both of you.

And if the guy asked to meet in Hoboken, shouldn't he know of a few great places???

Sadly, the list of non-douchey bars in Hoboken is very short. However, there are a couple of good ones. Louise & Jerry's is one that I can vouch for. Comfortable, never crowded, great jukebox. The other one that comes to mind I haven't been to, but from what I have been told, has great beer and is fairly non-douchey: Cork City.

Does anybody know what happened to Scotland Yard? It used to be a venue for blues and live acoustic acts, but last time I walked by there about 6 months ago there was terrible loud and bad club music being blasted from there. I was like, huh?

The Hoboken part at the request of my date. I don't know of a single place in Hoboken except Amanda's. The date is tomorrow. I hate bars. If I have to go to one, I would prefer that it be relaxed, have a good beer and wine selection and have some character. This is my ideal bar:http://www.unionhallny.com/
THANKS!
