I've known people who have allergies and have been able to live with a poodle--they have hair so require grooming but don't shed, so maybe something to consider. They're also easier to find through rescues. Big poodles with shaggy haircuts are so cute too!

A lot of times, the "doodle" rescue dogs are first generation mixes and the "slightly curly, but shaggy labs or golden retrievers will be available; they are not multi-generation labradoodles. They're up for adoption because these furry pups will shed and aggravate the allergies.

Dogs with hair - not fur - will be your best bet, no matter the breed. They will need regular grooming because the hair keeps growing, not shedding. My niece is allergic to the fur and saliva, so no matter what dog I have she'll be slightly miserable.

Please please please do not give a commercial dog breeder any money! They profit off the euthanization of millions of dogs every year and there are so many dogs young and old available for adoption. It amazes me so much that educated people even contemplate the idea of "buying" a dog.

This rescue's in NJ: http://doodlerescue.org/

I don't know anything about them personally, but you can usually find a rescue for just about any breed you're looking for ("hypoallergenic" or not). Petfinder's a good resource, though I'm not seeing any of that type of dog locally. I'd contact rescuelife and see what they can do--anything but a breeder.

I think if you want a labradoodle, you'll have to pony up the cash for one.

don't count on any one breed to be hypoallergenic. it varies from dog-to-dog, and depends largely on how you maintain your home:

http://articles.washingtonpost.com/20 ... uese-water-dog-dog-breeds

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-kare ... llergy-dog_b_1917329.html

http://www.dogchannel.com/dog-breeds/ ... oallergenic-dog-myth.aspx

but you will always hear anecdotal evidence to the contrary, from somebody whose highly-allergic friends have fared well with their shih tzu, maltese, whatever...

good luck!

I'm an adoption counselor for a great rescue organization in the city and we always have a few hypoallergenic dogs available. Please don't go to a breeder, there are so many reasons not to and I can get you a great young hypo dog. Want to drop your email here and I'll be in touch?

Would love to rescue a Labradoodle. Does anyone know of any nearby/local groups? Or suggestions on where to look?

I've never gone to a breeder and really don't want to start now but my son has allergies and it's been suggested that a Labradoodle is the best choice for us.

Thanks.
