(Isn?t it really out of Mayor Fulop?s hands? But that vote on July 17th could be interesting)

From Terrence T. McDonald Jersey Journal's piece?.

Fulop, meanwhile, said he urges Watterman to reconsider.

"While by law her aide is only her decision and Jen is great, I think the appearance is not something I would think is favorable for her," he said. "I think another route would be better."

The council is expected to approve all its members' aides on Wednesday, July 17.

** *
(People will remember things like this in 2017 Councilperson Watterman. Look what happened to Councilman Bill Gaughan he knew he was done. ) ( I am still trying to figure out why Boggiano and Yun abstained from the Jeremy Farrell Corporation Counsel vote. ) (One thing to show your independence from the pack but do you both really think Farrell is unqualified? Anyone is better then the Healy stooge Matsikoudis.)

Open Letter to Councilperson Watterman

Dear Joyce,

I met you when you attended our neighborhood meeting with Steve, Rolando, and Frank. I liked what you had to say and respect your background, and I voted for you. Twice.

I am sure your daughter is a capable and good person and I am also glad she helped you get elected. But now, please, do the right thing and dont hire her as your aide.

I worked my way through high school and college, working in maintenance for a school district. I was one of the few part time employees that was not related to a principal or superintendent, and believe me, I know nepotism first hand. The special kids got the best jobs, were generally not managed, and were clearly favored. I would never want to be in that environment again, and urge you to reconsider.

For the sake of the Fulop platform, wont you please find a qualified person to work for you? Surely with the large number of people underemployed without benefits, you can find a good assistant. And, I am sure your talented and smart daughter will find success on her own.

Sincerely,
Jack

I'm very surprised to read this here today. Our new mayor would allow this? This goes against everything he stands for from what I understand. How this woman can just give her daughter a part time job with benefits?? Insane. I doubt that our new mayor will allow this, I mean how can he? Again it is everything he is against. I cannot believe I'm reading this less that 24 hours after he was sworn in.

'time-honored tradition'!

This is the problem with JC politics and city administration - too many time-honored traditions.

All positions should be advertised, so all can apply for and the BEST person gets the position, which means JC gets the BEST person.
Nepotism has been a cancer for this city and should stop and legislated against.

This is not a question of 15k, it's an ethics issue. She can easily wield her influence to get another higher profile job for her couple of years later.

I am glad she screened her aide. And yes, I never saw her speak at council meetings, she is an unknown. I have no clue since there is no "public address at council meetings, or paper trail" on Candice. In my opinion this is not the way to elect council people. But Candice is not the only one who is an unknown. At least Boggiano is not an unknown. He has spoken before the city council many times and has written numerous "letters to the editor" before he was elected. Boggiano is the type of person that should be on the council and luckily he is.

She's not a stripper, guys. She's a Christian Hip Hop artist. How is this an issue?

Also, as long as she is vetted and is qualified, I have no issue with her working for her Mother as her aide (being qualified and vetted are key - not sure the other aides in question fit these 2 requirements). She really did manage a lot for the Councilwoman during the campaign and was pretty effective. No, I don't personally know her - just giving my 2 cents from what I observed of her work, and Ms. Watterman's

there's really a debate over the hiring of a SECRETARY on $15K a year? I don't see anywhere that specifies if the job is part-time or full-time, but based on who the SECRETARY reports to, i think it's safe to assume full-time?

15k/year = $288 GROSS A WEEK

my point being, who cares?

I felt the same way at first...but think about it. At what dollar amount would it start to become an issue for you?

And what about accountability? Will her mother replace her if she performs poorly?

It's just irresponsible and immature. Considering the history in Jersey City, to go ahead and hire your daughter? It's ridiculous. What happened to common sense?

There are reasons why, in the private sector, there are policies that prohibit the hiring of family members.

How about this solution? You want to hire your daughter to work for you? Pay her out of your own pocket.

This is the reason I do not believe in voting for unknown councilmembers (supported Dan Levin.)

Dan Levin's opponent, Candice Osborne, hired an aide after posting for the position. She and volunteers screened and interview about two dozen candidates through two rounds of interviews.

But.....you never saw her speak at a council meeting.

I don't know anyone that works in the city, but I would like a job that pays benefits and pays into a future pension.

To user1111:
Fulop attacked Willie Flood and Bill Gaughan for hiring family members as a councilman, not as mayor. I used the correct title. Also when I hosted the Ward A, B, C, D debates, I asked that question and all candidates said they were against that idea. I did not host the at-large debate

Now that is the way to go but it would take months, maybe even a year or so for it to pass and be put into law. As of right there is nothing Fulop can do other than advise her it is not a smart choice.

There are plenty of people in Jersey City who would be willing to take on a part time 15k job with benefits.

Children should never be hired by their parents for a government job!

Where is Fulop's response, anyway? The link someone posted just goes to the old article.

Did you even read Mayor Fulop's response? BTW in case you missed it he is no longer a councilman.

I kind of agree with this. It's not like she's heading up the planning department. She'll be scheduling meetings.

I understand it looks bad, but nepotism is a problem when people wind up in positions of influence with no idea what they are doing. When it results is someone answering phones and scheduling meetings for $15k a year it just doesn't seem like that big of a deal.

Well, at least we know she won't be getting a city car.

Pathetic. Come on!

Fulop! Time to make a new anti-nepotism law preventing people from hiring their family members.

This is an absolute disgrace and a horrible start to what should be a new beginning in Jersey City.

Shame on Watterman for her pathetic laziness.
