I just use newspaper mostly or napkins from restaurants.
1. It is economical, virtually free considering how many free newspapers there are. I cut it up into squares and keep it in a tupperware box by the old throne.
2. It is better for the environment.
3. As long as you crumple it a bit, I find it no less effective than the most expensive papers on the market.
4. I have never had an issue with drain blockage. Newspaper turns to sludge when wet, commercial paper has tensile strength.

Vigilante. You are so right about Charmin. Had an issue with that in my main drain. If you google Charmin you will see that many people have indeed had the same problem. It is banned in our house! :)

The only thing that should be flushed down the toilet is human waste and toilet paper, and certain cleaning powder/liquids. Anything else, even if it says flushable on the packaging, like feminine care products or cat litter should be avoided. Condoms, latex gloves, hair - from pets or human - paper towels as mentioned, can (and will) cause problems.

Don't bite my head off, but toilet plumbing isn't nearly as scary as it looks, and it's a great life skill to acquire. It's actually quite easy to pull the whole toilet off it's mount ( drain tank, 2 nuts and disconnecting the water hose) and see if the clog is in the toilet or the drain itself. I've heard that large objects getting accidentally flushed can get lodged in the toilet trap and be impossible to get loose.

Yes.. they have different size bits for different sized pipes. Years back they cleared a bad one that was actually clear out at the end of the sewer line. It happened after we had SEVERE rains, so I am guessing something from the sewer backed up into the line. It took a while for the guy to work through it.

Rust is a big pain to break through. Sometimes the bit breaks right through the pipe if it is weakened by years of corrosion.

when you state that the pipes need to be "power-routed out" is that when they take something like a snake attached to a drill to release the clog?

no kids so its not a toy in there...

thanks for the helpful suggestions

I have used Floodwatch for years to route out drains. If the clog is beyond the toilet itself, it could be grease (happened to one of my building two weeks ago) or rust. Old cast iron pipes can sometimes build up rust that flakes off in the piping elbows.

In either case, you will need the pipes power-routed out. It should run about $125. Can you have it done and just take it off your rent?

I'm not handy at all but i invested in a plunger. Get out some old newspapers, line it around your toilet, pour in a bit of dish washing detergent to lubricate things up and create a good suction to force the crap down. I've done it a few times myself and it surprisingly works. You just need to a good plunger. I've had success with both the regular old fashioned plunger and the one with the coiled apparatus. Good luck!

Hello - Are you by chance near varick or columbus drive? I seem to be having a similar problem. The toilet kind of flushes but not everything goes down.

thanks heights, but id rather have the number to a plumber. will the city do anything even if its only been 5 hours since i told my landlord of the problem?

robin/tern...give me a number to a plumber, im not stupid, who doesn't know how to use a bucket of water to flush a toilet? you'd be pissed too if you couldn't use the toilet and had shit floating in it that wasnt yours.

my freaking landlord just told me she is too busy to find another plumber. and told me to find a bar to shit in.

Call the city health dept, the mayor's office, and housing code authority. This is the J.C. operator's number (201) 547-5000 she will connect you to any city agency. It sounds like you did all you could you may want to call a plumber yourself and save the receipt so you can deduct it off of your monthly rent. Keep records and details when you spoke to your landlord concerning this incidet.

When you say won't flush, is the toilet blocked and full with water, or just no water comes out when you flush?

If the latter, fill a bucket with water and pour it in to flush manually.

That should tide you over until tomorrow.

Robin.

What do I do? The toilet won't flush and I called the landlord this morning @ 9am...she said the maintenance guy she uses cant come until tomorrow. We have only one toilet. My roommate and I don't have another apt we can stay in or place to use the bathroom. I suggested the landlord call another plumber, she wont.

What do I do? I don't have the money to pay for a plumber myself. Can anyone suggest a person I can suggest my landlord can call to come fix the toilet...perhaps she just doest know anyone else to call.

thanks
