But please please. Never, ever question anyone that signs up and serves for our country. They check -in their egos on sign-in. They agree to do everything their country asks of them, without question. LeRoy. I didn't know you. It breaks my heart to know you served, and sacrificed your life at such a young age. You served your country, and you have our thanks. We are safer down to your service, and others like you.

I called over to the funeral home and they told me the procession will be leaving about 10:00am on Saturday. They weren't sure of the route and advised me to call tomorrow afternoon for details - St. Pauls Ave apparently has construction so they're not sure if they're going that way.

LeRoy DeRonde III's was brought to a Jersey City funeral home this morning. In a solemn display of military precision, the members of the Honor Guard removed casket from the hearse at 10 a.m. this morning and carried it into McLaughlin Funeral Home on Pavonia Avenue, where people can pay their respects tonight and tomorrow from 5 p.m. to 9.m. DeRonde will be buried Saturday at the Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington. DeRonde was a member of the 125th Brigade Support Battalion and on a tour in the Chak-E Ward District of Afghanistan when was killed in an attack by enemy forces on May 27. He was 22. DeRonde's cousin, Jason Owen, said that planning the funeral has been a blessing because it's taken his mind off the incredible grief of DeRonde's death. Still, Owen never expected to lose him, soldier or not. "During his first deployment, I spent a week and a half thinking about it. This time I dropped him off and it didn't even cross my mind. It's funny how things work out. This time is when something happened to him,"said Owen. Staff Sgt. Michael Bevenuto has been with the Honor Guard, a special detail that escorts the bodies to funeral homes and attends the funerals, for about a year. He has performed a few escorts, but he said DeRonde's death stands out. "It's harder with that age -- someone that young, it hurts. I lost a good friend in my first tour," said Bevenuto, who's done two tours in Iraq. Of his work in the Honor Guard, Bevenuto said, "It never gets any easier." DeRonde's cousin, Jason Owen, said that for a kid who seemed a little misguided during his teenage years, joining the military was almost a calling. "If he had to write his own eulogy, I think he would say he took out insurgents,"said Owen, smiling. "He'd be prideful, he knew the risk. He wanted combat and he was living his dream. Pride is the only word for it." In tribute to DeRonde, Gov. He is survived by his father, LeRoy DeRonde, Jr.; his sister, Jennifer DeRonde; brother Harold DeRonde and a host of loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends that are too numerous to mention. Visitation will be on Thursday and Friday, June 7th and 8th, from 5-9p at McLaughlin Funeral Home, 625 Pavonia Avenue, Jersey City . Tonight, I?d like to speak to you about this transition. But first, let us remember why we came here. It was here, in Afghanistan, where Osama bin Laden established a safe-haven for his terrorist organization. It was here, in Afghanistan, where al Qaeda brought new recruits, trained them, and plotted acts of terror. It was here, from within these borders, that al Qaeda launched the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 innocent men, women and children. This kid was 10 or 11 when the twin towers fell. None of us will ever know all the reasons he signed up. But he signed up, served, and gave his life for our country.
In my book, that's a hero and deserves our respect and thanks. And prayers and tears.

LeRoy DeRonde III grew up in a "tight knit family" and enlisted in the Army to support his struggling family, his cousin Jason Owen said today. The Department of Defense announced that DeRonde was one of two soldiers that was killed in Afghanistan when his unit was attacked by enemy fire during patrol on May 27. The 22 year-old DeRonde grew up in Jersey City and was the middle child of three, leaving behind his younger brother Harold ,18, and older sister Jennifer, 33. In 2002, the passing of DeRonde's mother from ovarian cancer shook the family to its core. "At that time the family was going through rough times," Owen said. When Owen was 27, he and his fiancee became the guardians of DeRonde and his younger brother after DeRonde's mother's death. DeRonde was 16 at the time. DeRonde briefly attended Dickinson and Lincoln High Schools, Owen said today. "At 20, it clicked for him. He would have to put the family on his shoulders to survive," said Owen, adding that DeRonde began to seriously consider the military. After getting his GED and taking a few college credit courses, DeRonde left home for basic training in January 2011. Three months later he was one of five basic training graduates to be promoted to second-class private and was awarded the 1st Battalion 48th Infantry Regiment Order of the Dragon Soldiers. DeRonde was stationed in Fort Bliss, Texas, and was assigned to the 125th Brigade Support Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division. Owen said his cousin was reserved, and had a heart of gold. "I think his legacy will be that when he realized that his purpose in life was to help his family, he stepped up to the challenge," Owen said. On Monday, Soldiers' Angels of New Jersey -- a nonprofit dedicated to helping soldiers and their families -- created a tribute Facebook page for DeRonde. The viewing for Army Pfc. LeRoy DeRonde III has been scheduled for Thursday and Friday, 5 to 9 p.m. at the McLaughlin Funeral Home, 625 Pavonia Ave. off of Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City. The burial will take place 11 a.m. Saturday at the Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, the funeral home announced. DeRonde will be buried at the cemetery's 9/11 Veterans Memorial section with a full military service.

LeRoy DeRonde III was coming into his own, distancing himself from a hard-luck childhood and stepping up to take care of his family. The 22-year-old Jersey City man saw the military as a way to do that, his family said, in a plan that began to form eight years ago when his mother, Elizabeth, died of cancer. Her absence shook the family?s foundation and then profoundly galvanized her eldest son. "He realized he was going to put the family on his shoulders. The military was his calling to do that financially," DeRonde?s cousin, Jason Owen, said last night outside the soldier?s family?s apartment on West Side Avenue. "From the time he decided that it was full steam ahead." But DeRonde was one of two soldiers killed on May 27 when their unit was attacked in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said today. DeRonde, assigned to the 125th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Fort Bliss Texas, died in the Wardak District in central Afghanistan. DeRonde is at least the 44th service member with ties to New Jersey to be killed in Afghanistan since the war began in 2001. An additional 102 service members from New Jersey have died in Iraq since 2003. "His life didn?t take hold until he was 22," said Owen, who noted DeRonde sent monthly checks home. "He was really taking the reins, he was ascending. The real tragedy here is from an upbringing that wasn?t so good he was working ... to help his family and to better himself." DeRonde was born and raised in the city?s Bergen neighborhood. As a child, he kept mostly to himself. His father, Leroy DeRonde Jr., said he loved playing PlayStation 3 with his brother, Harold, who is now 17. "The two were inseparable," DeRonde?s father said. He added that since his son?s deployment a year ago, they would talk using the online video chat service Skype. "If he wasn?t on, my hands would shake," he said. "It?s a terrible thing." Through the years, and in DeRonde?s short life, the tight-knit family has known both the fear of loss and tragedy. At 5, Harold was diagnosed with leukemia and given three weeks to live. The family went to Disney World on a Make-A-Wish vacation. It was the only real vacation they ever took together, Leroy DeRonde Jr. said. By luck, Harold survived. But when their mother died, DeRonde made a plan that required groundwork. He got his GED and then 15 college credits, both of which were required before he could join the Army, which he did in January 2011. DeRonde, his family said, was kind of person who, when he figured out where he wanted to go and what he wanted to do, nothing could stop him. After basic training, DeRonde?s family saw him off at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. ? as one of a handful of graduates to have been immediately promoted to a Private E2. "He?d been so quiet, but he knew everyone, they knew his name," his half-sister, Jennifer Owen, said. "In six months, he really came out of his shell." Funeral arrangements are pending.
