Generally you have to do the written exam, which when I did it consisted of passing 24 out of 30 questions based on the NJ DMV manual. The road test is generally waived. Note you are tested on questions that you mightn't think apply to you - for example how many weeks do you have after marriage to register a name change.

I believe the expiry date on the license will be the end date on your visa or residents card (green card) - so worth making sure your visa/residents card is updated first.
