Well for selling their art on the street I assumed they were more starving than world renowned artists. How exactly do artists price their work anyways, I mean when you are selling your paintings under a tarp and not in a gallery I assumed that would make the pricing more humble.

"Manhattan prices?" You must not buy art.

Id luv to see the local artists displaying pieces all over JC...or made for JC in public spaces. That would be cool.

they do mention that, so they're not being disingenuous

Jersey City is just across the Hudson from Manhattan; like Brooklyn across the East River, it is a source of more affordable housing and work spaces.

Well actually the article ranks cities' artistic levels based upon the census and the number of people who listed themselves as artists. A lot of the people living in JC work in NYC, including the artists. I wouldn't be surprised if there are great artists in JC who just don't show their work here etc. The article does not rank cities based on the art shown in the cities. I agree it's rare I see something really good around here. Though I have seen some ok stuff.

I think it's about art being produced at a third grade quality.

The so-called artists in this city churn out the most crap I have ever seen.

Sooo... gibbons70, You must be one of the foremost art critics in the world to make a statement like this. What exactly are your credentials again?

Unfortunately, it?s probably not unfair to say that a disproportionate number of abstract artists in Jersey City have not mastered fundamental skills.

Jersey City #10 on 'The Atlantic' list of most artistic U.S. cities

Wednesday, November 30, 2011, 6:21 PM
By The Jersey Journal

Jersey City makes it into the top 10 of The Atlantic magazine?€™s list of most artistic cities in the nation.

Jersey City makes it into the top 10 of The Atlantic magazine?s list of most artistic cities in the nation, beating out such hot spots as Miami and Atlanta.

"Jersey City has a vibrant and diverse artist community, which is something we are proud of and use to market our city," said Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy. "Having a robust arts market, with galleries, music, theater, and art and cultural events adds to the quality of life, and we are pleased to have Jersey City ranked with larger cities such as New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles as a home for the arts."

The city, which comes in at #10 on the list, is ?a source of more affordable housing and work spaces,? according to Richard Florida of The Atlantic.

Florida notes that New York and Los Angeles have the largest number of artists, but for his list he used a different measure that takes into account a ratio that compares a region?s share of artists to the national share of artists.

On this list, Sante Fe, New Mexico comes out on top, with San Francisco, Calif. in second place and New York in third.

?Jersey City has a vibrant and diverse artist community, which is something we are proud of and use to market our city,? said Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy. ?Having a robust arts market, with galleries, music, theater, and art and cultural events adds to the quality of life, and we are pleased to have Jersey City ranked with larger cities such as New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles as a home for the arts.?
