No, they are walking down to the Israeli moving company. It's a shortcut. Stay out of the White Star when the Moishe's crew are partying, those guys and their gals are KRAZY!

There are two tunnels, the active one pictured above, and a disused one.

The disused one is the one you walk through to go up the Bergen Arches to Tonele Aveneue.

i've been through there a few times. on the first there was a homeless camp not 100 feet west of Palisades Ave., where we nervously (we were 7 or 8 people) walked past three men cooking canned food over a barrel fire.

another time (i was with one other person -- my brother), i saw a man hiding behind a trestle nearer the end of the cut, under one of the shorter tunnels. not sure if he had malicious intent or was just concealing himself from us, but we kept a close eye on him for a good distance. after that experience, i haven't been back. you're definitely taking some risk traipsing around there.

And here's a link to a thread (not the only one), of someone dying in the nearby tunnel.

not downtown, but probably the coolest spot in JC is the Reservoir at Pershing Field in the Heights.

http://new.jcreservoir.org/

I think it is generally closed to the public, but there is a small gate near the corner of Summit Ave and Reservoir Ave that is unattended

I'm surprised the police did not clean up that area sooner. By getting rid of the "comforts" the people will leave. Such as the OWS crowd. Well at least they are finally going to put up a barrier.

With the new security fence going up, Bergen Arches and the train tracks will be pretty much sealed off in the coming months. As CSX pointed out, there are increasing fewer ways in and out of that area, making it a good place to avoid.

Is it safe for a healthy person to walk the Bergen Arches during normal daylight hours?

PS: Careful along the train tracks beside Enos Jones Park suggested by tern/Robin. Thos tracks and tunnels still have freight trains running on them - a homeless man died recently in one of the tunnels.

Other outdoor spots:

Service road between Pacific/Merseles and Johnston Ave under the Turnpike leads to a vacant parking lot.

Enos Jones hockey rink, and 16th & Coles for DIY skateboarding.

Bergen Arches, go through the fence down by the White Star Park, across the train tracks, scramble over and along the Pallisades a way, through the disused rail tunnel and you can walk all the way down to Tonnele avenue.

It's an urban oasis with trees and flowers, birds and butterflies, skunks, those fat beaver-like creatures, and a few homeless encampments.

Robin.
