It's not fair to assume anything based on this article. The mother was probably stunned, panicked, and not thinking straight. And that comment on the article page, blaming the mother for letting the boy out run into the street-- there are tons of trick or treaters in that area. In those crowds, you can't always control a sugar-fueled kid. Thank goodness the boy is going to be OK.

Wow! I love the mother's reaction. Perhaps she was seeing dollar signs? 16th Street resident usually equals Holland Gardens. The driver is screwed even if he was under the speed limit. Lawyer up!!

Jersey City 7-year-old hit by SUV while trick-or-treating is released from hospital

Published: Wednesday, November 02, 2011, 3:00 AM Updated: Wednesday, November 02, 2011, 7:40 AM

By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal

A 7-year-old Jersey City boy spent Halloween night in the hospital after being struck by an SUV while trick-or-treating Downtown just before 6 p.m. Monday, officials said.

The 16th Street boy was at Coles and Ninth streets when he was struck by a Honda Pilot driven by a New York City man, reports said.

An official at the Jersey City Medical Center said the boy was admitted to the pediatrics ward but was released yesterday at 3:10 p.m.

The driver told police the boy ran into the street in the middle of the block from behind a parked car, reports said. The 38-year-old, who was issued no tickets, said he didn?t see the boy enter the roadway, reports said.

Patrick Kinsella witnessed the incident and said the SUV was only going 15 to 20 miles per hour. He was the first to get to the boy, who was thrown about 10 feet and landed partially beneath a parked car.

?His eyes were open and he was terrified,? said the 39-year-old Jersey City resident and Army veteran, who used his training to assess the boy and found he did not appear seriously injured.

The boy?s mother rushed into the street and ?she freaked out and started screaming and crying,? Kinsella said. ?She said ?Who did this?? and I said ?It doesn?t matter who did this, kneel down here and hold your son?s hand.? ?

An off-duty emergency medical technician happened by and took over until an ambulance arrived, Kinsella said.

Yea thats why I decided to take them to hoboken. We hit up some stores on washington then came down bloomfield then back down garden before the kids and I got tired.
Lots of nice decorated houses on bloomfield.

Well I have a two year old who was pooped and crying that she wanted to go to bed so we had to cut it off. That's 4 lbs total for two kids! And combined with all of the candy we got at Halloween parties, we decided to cut it short. There's only so much candy that these kids can eat!

We got at least 2 lbs of candy each for both of our kids from Trick or Treating in Jersey City. We could have easily have gotten more but the kids were so pooped that we stopped. You just have to know where to go. We were in Paulus Hook. It was awesome. Lighthorse made a haunted house.

A young girl was struck by a car around 6pm on Coles St. between 8th and 9th. She was awake when the ambulance took her away. Later I saw a teenager walking through Hamilton Park and urinating on the lawn as he strolled with a large group of friends. Maybe making the HP area the center of all things Halloween is becoming a bad idea.
