September 16, 2011 | 6:24 pm At least 5 people were killed after a plane crashed into the VIP stands at an air show in Reno late Friday afternoon. The plane crashed near the bleachers at the National Championship Air Races, said Michelle Anderson, a spokeswoman for the Reno Fire Department. The pilot was reported dead, as were four others. Mike Houghton, president and chief executive of the Reno Air Racing Assn., said at a news conference that 40 to 50 people were injured in the crash. He identified the pilot as Jimmy Leeward, a real estate developer from Ocala, Fla., who has been racing in Reno since 1975. The full scope of the disaster was unclear. Officials described a scene of chaos as they tried to assess the damage. "We have five bodies out there, but they transported a whole load to hospitals," Lt. Mac Venzon of the Washoe County Sheriff's Department told The Times. "We're just trying to establish a scene and get everybody cleared out of here, and then we'll know more," he said.

LAST BODIES RECOVERED
Wednesday, August 12, 2009 By CARLY BALDWIN JOURNAL STAFF WRITER HOBOKEN - The bodies of the two remaining victims of Saturday's midair crash were recovered when a large piece of the Piper PA-32 plane that collided with a helicopter was lifted from the Hudson River shortly after 5 p.m. yesterday. All nine victims of the midair disaster have now been accounted for. Saturday's crash killed three Pennsylvania residents on the plane and five Italian tourists and a pilot on the helicopter. Recovered near the Lackawanna Terminal, yesterday's wreckage was hoisted from 60 feet of water with a crane by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Recovery workers immediately covered the tangle of crushed steel and wires with a tarp. The Liberty Tours helicopter that collided with the small private plane was recovered from the Hudson River on Sunday. The helicopter was brought ashore to the 12th Street pier in Hoboken, where it was unveiled Monday morning. Last night, the plane was taken by boat to Pier 40 in Manhattan. Debris from the plane and helicopter remains scattered along the riverbed off of Hoboken. Divers fought extremely strong currents and murky conditions, with visibility less than one foot at times, as they tried to locate the two aircraft. Parts of both aircraft have been located in water between 30 and 60 feet. Recovery crews announced they had located the plane Sunday night, but the currents and cloudy water slowed attempts to haul it out of the river. They tried to tie straps around the plane Monday and yesterday, but often had to take breaks because of hazardous conditions.

Since I know JCList readers have uncommonly big hearts, here's a story I picked up at Hoboken411.com - it is a message from councilwoman Beth Mason:

I would like to inform you that Frank Sinatra Drive is currently closed from 4th ? 12th streets while rescue workers continue to aid in the recovery effort of Saturday?s plane and helicopter crash. Recovery workers are currently trying to pull the plane out of the Hudson, as well as recover the bodies of the last two crash victims. I want to thank the rescue workers for all of their hard work and efforts. Currently there are six recovery boats and numerous divers in the river working to secure the plane. These workers could use donations of water, Gatorade, and/or ice. On Sunday alone, rescue workers went through 20 cases of water. I ask that you please consider donating these supplies. You can drop off your donations at the rescue station located at the entrance to Frank Sinatra Drive between 11th and 12th Streets. In addition, I would also like to thank Benny Tudino?s for assisting me in supplying lunch and water to the workers yesterday. Flying a small plane above the Hudson River can feel like ducking into a crowded, urban canyon ? with towering skyscrapers on each side and more than a dozen helicopters and planes all buzzing lower than the nearby Empire State Building. The city?s worst air disaster in eight years has drawn calls for more regulation of the air corridor over the Hudson, which is less than three-quarters of a mile wide at the site where a helicopter and small plane collided midair. It serves as an air highway for helicopters, police patrols and small planes flown by pilots of varying ability. ?That?s not a lot of space,? said Ray Adams, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association union at Newark (New Jersey) Liberty International Airport. ?And it?s not unusual at all for us to have 10 to 20 aircraft between the George Washington Bridge and the Statue of Liberty.? Pilots are largely free to choose their own route, radioing their position periodically but not communicating regularly with air traffic controllers. Planes often fly as low as 500 feet to get a good look at the Statue of Liberty. ?So, what you have is a lot of helicopters. You?ve got the sightseeing tours. You have police helicopters. You have the weekend warriors who fly up and down the river,? said Justin Green, an aviation attorney and former military pilot who has flown the route. ?All these airplanes are flying 1,000 feet or lower, and a lot of the pilots are up there to see the sights, so they may not be seeing and avoiding things as they should be,? he said. Pilots must stay under 1,100 feet to avoid straying into jetways used by commercial aircraft. They also aren?t allowed to fly over Manhattan?s tall buildings or stray into restricted zones around several major airports. ?What makes it kind of hairy is that, to stay out of all the restricted airspace ... you are kind of shooting the gap,? Green said. Planes and helicopters have blind spots just like cars do, making it difficult at times to spot an approaching aircraft, said Stanley Ferber, a flight instructor from Brooklyn. ?The only way to compensate is to have your head constantly on a swivel, moving your head around and scanning all parts of the sky,? Ferber said. In Saturday?s deadly crash, the plane approached from the north and clipped the helicopter from behind, witnesses said. A warning from a pilot on the ground apparently came too late. The collision may lead to the separation of helicopters and planes in the congested airspace above the New York City, said Hubert ?Skip? Smith, an associate professor emeritus of aerospace engineering at Penn State University. ?There probably needs to be more regulation,? Smith said. ?Restricting the helicopters to 500 feet and below and having the airplanes fly between 500 and 1500 feet would probably help by separating these two distinctly different types of air traffic. I know that?s what the helicopter pilots want.? U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer called for toughening flight restrictions over the Hudson, and New York City Council Member Gale Brewer said tourist helicopters should be banned from the corridor. ?All of us in this region also need to take a long and serious look at the circumstances surrounding this crash to ensure that significant air traffic over the Hudson doesn?t come at the risk of the safety of New Jersey families who live along the riverfront,? New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine said. The National Transportation Safety Board will look into the congestion issues, Chairman Debbie Hersman said Sunday. But Mayor Michael Bloomberg, himself a recreational pilot, has argued that keeping the skies open to general aviation aircraft is necessary for the city?s economy. After Saturday?s crash, he said that cutting off flights is ?not something that anybody wants? and referred to the city?s ?commercial interests? in catering to the tour helicopters that take off daily from the West Side helipad. Accidents are rare, he said, despite many daily flights. The city?s heliports alone handle an estimated 88,000 takeoffs and landings a year. ?It is a crowded, busy area. And generally pilots that fly in this area are well trained and they certainly have plenty of practice,? Bloomberg said. ?When the roads are crowded and going fast, you really want to pay attention, and pilots here typically do.? But other accidents have happened in the crowded airspace around Manhattan. New York Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle and his flight instructor died in 2006 when they smashed into an apartment tower while flying a popular sightseeing route around Manhattan. After that crash, federal officials banned all small, fixed-wing planes from flying over the East River unless the pilot had specific permission from air traffic controllers.

That plane is expected to be the focal point of recovery efforts today. Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio authorized the Hudson County Rapid Response Team, which guarded debris from the wreckage that fell in Hoboken, including a tire from the private plane that fell onto Sinatra Drive and metal that landed on the Stevens Institute of Technology campus. The Jersey City Fire Department dispatched 12 companies, including fire boats, Marine 1 and Marine 2, at 11:56 a.m. Saturday and searched the waters for four hours using thermal imaging equipment, officials said. North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue dispatched the fire boat Vincent Neglia at 12:15 p.m., but stopped searching for survivors and started looking for debris after about three hours, when it was clear this was "not going to be a rescue, it is going to be a recovery," said Jeff Welz, co-director of the agency. Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer held at least four news briefings over the weekend -one with Gov. Jon Corzine, another with National Transportation Safety Board officials. Hoboken Police Capt. James Fitzsimmons, coordinator of the city's Office of Emergency Management, served as the media's primary contact until NTSB officials took over Saturday night. The Jersey City Police Department dispatched Sgt. Greg Kierce, its Office of Emergency Management coordinator, and six divers from the Emergency Services Unit to the scene. The divers served as backup for the New York Police Department divers who conducted the search.

And the few accidents that have occurred, the pilots have been quite good about trying to avoid crashing on land and aim for the river. By the way, we really don't have any air shows in New York City. A few flybys every now and then is nothing more unusual than the typical air traffic we have flying overhead and does not constitute and airshow. Out of curiousity, did you want the military stop it's training flights at the Warren Grove Gunnery Range after they shot up a school in Little Egg Harbor in 2004 on a training flight? Or when an F-16 started an 18,000 acre fire down that way in 2007? Or when an F-16 crash across the GSP there in 2002? Or when another F-16 started a 1,600 acre fire in 2001? Or when an A-10 started a 12,000 fire there in 1999? Note to all of those folks out there looking for an argument or don't know sarcasm - I do not support the banning of any of the above or the closing of WGGR.

That could have happened whether he was flying the Hudson River corridor or whether he was on approach to Newark (something I assume you're not suggesting we prohibit). Plus, you're making it sound like these helicopters and planes are flying over the city. Unless they are under positive control of air traffic control, they're not. All of the uncontrolled traffic must remain over the river. The fact remains that midair collisions---and other accidents resulting from congestion---over the corridor are extremely rare. There are procedures in place to keep it this way. Of course, accidents can happen, but instead of overreacting, let's learn whatever we can from this tragedy and continue flying safely.

We are lucky a lot of people on land also didn't get killed because of these deadly joy rides - ban this activity around heavily populated areas - and ban air shows in these areas too.

i happened to be in hoboken when all this was going down. the amount of police response to this was overwhelming, to say the least:
i saw almost a half dozen undercover cop cars swarm the area (including a lincoln town car, which is going to make me think twice before trying to pass a limo car late night) dozen or more ambulances by sinatra park setting up a triage at least a dozen hudson county sherrifs walking around by the waterfront EMT's (i believe) wearing shirts that said 'special ops'.. not gonna lie, i was going to try to buy or barter one of them for those shirts. pretty kickass a ton of firefighters jersey city emergency services unit truck department of homeland security truck humvee with 2 soldiers in full camo driving around washington street either there's more to this than the media is stating, or maybe they did state something (i was out all day afterward so i stopped listening to the reports).. or this is juststandard protocol now for even seemingly small incidents like this. signs of the times i guess

There is no reason to ban small aircraft from flying the Hudson River VFR.
Do you know why this story has made front-page news and dominated the cable news shows all day? Because accidents like this are so very, very rare! Hundreds of these flights operate safely every single day. This was a tragedy to be sure, but there is no need to overreact.

How does a stupid thing like this happen ? Maybe all small crafts should be installed with collision radar to warn pilots to focus on what they are doing - flying their craft safely

I took a walk down to Exchange Place earlier and could only see a helicopter flying low around and around over the water. CNN is now reporting I think via Mayor Bloomberg, that it is now a recovery operation. 5 Italian tourists from Italy and the helicopter Pilot are dead as well as the 3 on the small plane from Teterboro including they are reporting a child. Horrible.
