Jersey City gang member gets 10 years in prison for conspiracy to murder

December 15, 2011, 3:00 AM
By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal

A Jersey City member of the Bloods street gang was sentenced to 10 years in prison yesterday for conspiring to murder a rival gang member in 2009.

Thomas Haskins, 26, a member of the Fruit Town and Brick City Brims set of the Bloods, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering and possession of firearms by a convicted felon, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman said yesterday in a press release.

The Jersey City man admitted conspiring with fellow Bloods members including Gerard Jennette, aka ?Swizzy,? 27, of Jersey City, and Samad McCallum, 24, of Elizabeth, to kill the rival gang member identified only as ?M.B.? in court papers, officials said. They believed M.B. was responsible for ordering the murder of two Fruit Town and Brick City Brims members in Jersey City, officials said.

On April 27, 2009, Haskins, Jennette and McCallum were arrested in Jersey City in a van with a loaded Kahr 9-mm handgun, a loaded Intratech Luger 9-mm semiautomatic Tec-9, and three ski masks, officials said.

They were arrested at 10:30 p.m. after Sheriff?s Officer Terrence Murphy saw the van driven by Jennette run a red light at Kennedy Boulevard and Grant Avenue, reports said. When Murphy pulled the vehicle over, he saw open alcoholic containers and a gun on the back seat, reports said. A search revealed a second gun and the ski masks, reports said.

On July, 22 McCallum pleaded guilty to the same charges as Haskins and is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 5, officials said, adding that the charges against Jennette are pending.

District Court Judge Stanley R. Chesler also sentenced Haskins to serve three years supervised release after his prison term.

By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal

Thomas Hawkins, 26, of Jersey City, pleaded guilty in federal court today to conspiracy to commit the murder of a rival gang member, and to illegal possession of firearms.

A Jersey City man pleaded guilty in federal court yesterday to conspiring to kill a rival gang member in April 2009, and to illegally possessing firearms, officials said.

Thomas Haskins, 26, a member of the Fruit Town and Brick City Brims set of the Bloods street gang, admitted that he conspired with other gang members to kill a rival gang member who he believed was responsible for ordering the murder of two Fruit Town and Brick City Brims members in Jersey City, according to officials.

Haskins pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering, and one count of possession of two firearms while a convicted felon. Each count carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
He spent about two years in state prison starting in June 2006 on two weapons offenses, according to the state Department of Corrections website.

Haskins, along with Gerard Jennette, aka ?Swizzy,? and Samad McCallum, were arrested in Jersey City on April 27, 2009 with two loaded 9mm guns and three ski masks.

McCallum pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder and weapons charges on July 22.

Haskins is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 11.

Hudson County sheriff's officers seized a Tec-9 assault weapon and a semiautomatic handgun when they arrested three men who were found driving around Jersey City with three ski masks Monday night, officials said.

"They had the ski masks and they were up to no good," Hudson County Sheriff Juan M. Perez said yesterday of Jersey City residents Gerard Jennette, 25, of Bergen Avenue, and Thomas Haskins, 25, of Carteret Avenue, and Elizabeth resident Samad McCullum, 21.

They were arrested at Motoranoway Avenue and Carbon Place at 10:30 p.m. and charged with multiple weapons offenses, reports said.

Sheriff's Officer Terrence Murphy was on patrol at Kennedy Boulevard and Grant Avenue when he saw a minivan driven by Jennette run a red light, reports said.

When Murphy pulled over the minivan, he saw open alcoholic beverage containers and a pistol on the back seat, reports said.

In a more thorough search, police found the Tec-9 under the driver's seat, as well as the ski masks, reports said.
