Who at the shelter gave permission and allowed this woman to take the dogs? The dogs had been there for a while and all staff knew they were there under court order. What if the dog(s) killed someone while out for the two days?

This is a big faux pas and you can be sure a coverup is being concocted as I write.

The Jersey City woman whose dangerous dogs had been impounded since she violated an order to send them away apparently took the dogs home in the chaos as Hurricane Irene approached, officials said today

"We believe there is evidence she had them but it was in the context of the evacuation of the shelter," said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio today of Susan Kolb, 60, of Sheffield Street, whose South African Boerboels were tied to several Downtown attacks.

"It looks like there was a misunderstanding in that somebody other than the owner should have removed the dogs," the prosecutor said.

The dogs were returned a day after they were discovered missing and police inquiries.

After the attacks in 2008 and 2009, which sent three adults and a baby to the hospital, Jersey City impounded the 160- and 100-pound dogs.

They faced possible euthanization under the state Vicious Dog Law, but Kolb went to trial to defend them in Jersey City Municipal Court.

The dogs' lives were spared as a result of an agreement reached in May 2009 in which Kolb promised in court to send the dogs out of state. Kolb's violation of that court order has triggered new proceedings against the dogs in municipal court under the Vicious Dog Law. Their lives are again in the balance.

In January police found the dogs at Kolb's home and she was arrested on warrants for unpaid municipal court fines and charged with criminal contempt of court in Superior Court. The dogs were impounded at the Liberty Humane Society pending the outcome of the new Vicious Dog proceedings.

On Saturday. the shelter was being evacuated when it was found that Kolb's dogs were missing, police said. Officers went to Kolb's home looking for them but they did not find her or the dogs, reports said. The man that answered the door was uncooperative, police reports said. On Sunday, a man brought the dogs back to the shelter, officials said.

Kolb pleaded guilty to the contempt charge on Aug. 24 and is expected to get probation when sentenced on Oct. 7 by Superior Court Judge Lisa Rose. No new charges have been filed against her for the brief reunion with her pets this weekend.

I think I saw her today at 9:25 AM at the Grove Street PATH Station. She was walking towards the first car of the train going to Manhattan. Her eyeglasses were on top of her head. She was looking down at her cellphone or something.

Gassing is illegal in NJ as it should be. It's a horrible way to die.

Just when I think this woman couldn't do any worse than before, she oudoes herself. Unbelievable. Worse yet, she does not get charged for this little unauthorized reunion (in retrieving her dogs from the shelter, I believe that constitutes trespassing if nothing else), and for not following the previous court order AND skipping out on paying the fines, she will likely get nothing more than probation, no jail time whatsoever.

I can only hope the three different victims of the dog attacks aggressively pursue their civil suits (I know at least one did) and sue her into poverty. Even if its possible she has no assets to speak of and turns out to be judgment proof, let the unpaid civil judgments wreck her credit.

Since she's so above the law, there might be a place for this woman in the Healy administration.

WTF? Why haven't those dogs been either euthanized or sent away? How many times does she get to f*ck up before she actually is sent to jail?

It doesn't seem like all these incidents were "attacks". Seems more like a case of giant, uncontrolled and boisterous dogs in 2 of the incidents. If these dogs really wanted you dead you'd be dead. Woman knocked over? 6 stitches? Just a case of dumb owner with dogs she couldn't/wouldn't control. The dogs should be sent to a new owner who can handle them.

Owner of aggressive dogs set for criminal trial as dogs face being euthanized

The Jersey City woman whose South African Boerboels have been involved in several vicious attacks on individuals is being arraigned today on the charge of criminal contempt.

After a series of attacks in 2009, Jersey City officials impounded the dogs under the state?s Vicious Dog Law and they faced being euthanized.

Susan Kolb, 60, of Sheffield Street, went to trial to defend the dogs, and as part of an agreement reached with the city on May 15, 2009, she promised in court to remove them from the jurisdiction.

Resized Image
Susan Kolb, right, with her lawyer, Gina Calogero, stand at a hearing at Jersey City Municipal Court in March 2009.

But on Jan. 17 this year, Jersey City police got a 911 call from Kolb?s neighbor saying Kolb?s husband was being attacked by the two dogs.

Jersey City Animal Control investigated and the city municipal court issued a search and seizure warrant for the Kolb residence.

On Jan. 28, police executed the warrant and seized the dogs, Jumba and Imani, and arrested Kolb on warrants for unpaid municipal court fines, officials said. She was then charged with criminal contempt.

The dogs once again face possible sentences of being euthanized in Municipal Court, where proceedings under the Vicious Dog Law have been on hold pending the outcome of the grand jury presentation in Superior Court.

Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Leo Hernandez said that after today?s arraignment, the proceedings in Municipal Court will move forward.

The criminal contempt charge carries a possible sentence of up to 18 months in state prison, Hernandez said.
Kolb?s attorney, Gerald Miller of Jersey City, said yesterday that Kolb will plead not guilty.

Today?s proceeding will take place at 9:30 a.m. before Hudson County Superior Court Judge Kevin Callahan at the Hudson County Administration Building.

A date will likely be set today for a pretrial hearing.
The aggressive dogs have history of biting incidents:
On Sept. 21, 2008, at a park at Greene and Essex streets, police said the unleashed dogs knocked down a woman carrying her 6-month-old granddaughter.

James Joyce, 24, said he needed six stitches after being attacked by the dogs on Jan. 9, 2009 at Warren and Morris streets.

The dogs attacked and injured Jonathan L. Rodriguez, 24, of Brunswick Street, on Jan. 19, 2009, at Washington Street and Christopher Columbus Drive.

"Not that there is anything wrong with it" but the more I look at the photo the more it looks like a man in drag.

What kind of 60 year old mother gets not one but two huge AGGRESSIVE dogs to be around their autistic child? Isn't she a bit old to have any "children? The very idea of this scenario makes me sick.

"Trial date is set for Susan Kolb, who authorities say reneged on deal to save 'vicious' dogs

By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal

Susan Kolb faces contempt of court charges after her dogs, Jumba and Imani, were found in her home in February. Kolb had agreed to send the dogs to California in a plea deal.
A trial date was set this morning for the Jersey City dog owner charged with criminal contempt after failing to adhere to a court agreement to send her South African Boerboels -- Jumba and Imani -- away after the dogs were involved in several Downtown attacks.
The deadline for Susan Kolb, 60, of Sheffield Street, to accept a plea deal also came and went at today's hearing where Hudson County Superior Court Judge Kevin Callahan set Sept. 27 as her trial on the contempt charge.

Susan Kolb's dogs, Jumba and Imani.
She faces up to 18 months in prison if convicted, but probation is more likely.
The dogs, who weigh a combined 260 pounds, faced euthanization in 2009 when they were tried in Jersey City Municipal Court under the state Vicious Dog Law. But Kolb, 60, of Sheffield Street, saved them in a plea deal in which she agreed to send the two dangerous dogs to California.
The dogs' lives are in jeopardy again because they were found at her home in February, officials said. The alleged breach of the agreement made in municipal court resulted in Kolb being charged with criminal contempt in Hudson County Superior Court and the dogs again being charged as vicious.
Kolb's criminal prosecution in Superior Court and the Vicious Dog proceedings in municipal court are moving forward simultaneously. Kolb last appeared in the municipal court matter Friday. "

Can somebody explain why it takes so long to have a simple trial?

Court aims to euthanize dogs of Jersey City owner charged with criminal contempt

The Jersey City owner of two dogs that have attacked several different people was told by a judge yesterday that adjudication of charges she faces in Superior Court and proceedings in municipal court aimed at having the dogs euthanized will proceed simultaneously.
Susan Kolb, 60, of Sheffield Street, was charged with criminal contempt after the dogs were found at her home in February in violation of an agreement she made in Jersey City Municipal Court in 2009 to send them away.
The promise to send the dogs away halted a court proceeding to try the dogs under the state?s Vicious Dog Law, which could have resulted in their euthanization. Now the dogs face possible euthanization again under the law and the first hearing in that matter is set for July 15 in Jersey City Municipal Court.
?Criminal court is not going to wait for a municipal court matter to be resolved,? Hudson County Superior Court Judge Kevin Callahan said at yesterday?s hearing. Having said that, the judge noted that the municipal court matter will likely be resolved before the criminal case is.
The next hearing before Callahan on the criminal charge is set for July 25 and that will be the cutoff date for Kolb to accept a plea deal. The judge said that if the criminal case moves forward, he expects a September trial.

At this rate, the dogs will die of old age before it even gets to trial. Then her lawyer will argue the whole issue is moot and get the case thrown out, and she'll have gotten away with breaking the law.

I sure would like to be on the jury but given my bias, that won't happen. I would certainly like to watch the trial too.

Trial date may be set for Jersey City owner of dogs responsible for attacks

By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal

Resized ImageSusan Kolb and her lawyer, Leonard Meyerson, in Superior Court in Jersey City on June 14.

A trial date may be set today for the Jersey City woman who allegedly reneged on her agreement with a court to send away her South African Boerboels after the dogs were tied to several Downtown attacks, officials said.

Susan Kolb, 60, of Sheffield Street, was charged with criminal contempt after the dogs were found at her home in February in violation of her agreement to send them away that was made in Jersey City Municipal Court in 2009.

The promise to send the dogs away halted a court proceeding to try the dogs under the state?s Vicious Dog Law, which could have resulted in the dogs being euthanized. Now the dogs face possible euthanization again and Kolb faces a possible criminal conviction.

Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said he believes it is unlikely the lives of the dangerous dogs will be spared a second time, but their fate will be decided in Jersey City Municipal Court.

Information on the timeline for those Jersey City proceedings is likely to come out at today?s hearing before Hudson County Superior Court Judge Kevin Callahan at 9 a.m. in the Hudson County Administration Building on Newark Avenue in Jersey City.

Two large dogs responsible for 3 attacks in Jersey City may face death because owner didn't honor court agreement to send them out of state

Published: Wednesday, June 15, 2011, 3:03 AM
By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal

Two South African Boerboels responsible for at least three vicious attacks in Jersey City may have to be put down because their owner reneged on a promise to send them away, officials said yesterday.

The owner of the dogs, Susan Kolb, 60, of Sheffield Street was arraigned yesterday on the charge of criminal contempt for allegedly violating the agreement she made in court in 2009 to send the dogs away.

The promise to send the dogs away halted a court proceeding to try the dogs under the state's Vicious Dog Law, which would likely result in the dogs being euthanized.
But in January this year, Jersey City police discovered Kolb still had the dogs at the her home.

"There will be a trial there as to the fate of these two dogs," Hudson County Superior Court Judge Kevin Callahan said yesterday regarding the Vicious Dog Law case that will proceed concurrently with Kolb's trial on the contempt charge. She pleaded not guilty yesterday to the criminal charge.

After a series of attacks in 2008 and 2009, which sent three adults and a baby to the hospital, Jersey City officials impounded the 160- and 100-pound dogs, and they faced being put down. Kolb went to trial to defend the dogs and as part of an agreement reached on May 15, 2009, she promised in court to send them out of state.

But in January, Jersey City police got a 911 call from Kolb's neighbor saying Kolb's husband was being attacked by the two dogs. Jersey City Animal Control investigated and the city municipal court issued a search and seizure warrant for Kolb's residence.

On Jan. 28, police executed the warrant, seized the dogs, put them in an area animal shelter, and arrested Kolb on warrants for unpaid municipal court fines, officials said. She was then charged with criminal contempt in Superior Court.
New proceedings against the dogs in municipal court under the Vicious Dog Law were being held pending presentation of the contempt case to a grand jury in Superior Court.

Yesterday, Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Leo Hernandez released the Vicious Dog Law aspects of the case back to municipal court, where a trial is expected to be expedited.

Kolb faces up to 18 months in prison if convicted of the criminal charge in Superior Court, and the next hearing in the matter is set for July 6 before Callahan.

Kolb and her attorney had no comment after yesterday's hearing.

I don't see how she could even plead "not guilty". They told her to get rid of the dogs and she didn't. What a joke.

And the sad thing is, she supposedly got the dogs for her child who has autism. So now she is facing jail time and the kid will have no dogs and possibly no mom if she is sent to jail for 18 months!

She didn't even pay the fines! A joke indeed. But, finally, an update on this never ending saga.

So, does anyone know if she plead guilty or not at the arraignment?

Owner of aggressive dogs set for criminal trial as dogs face being euthanized

Published: Tuesday, June 14, 2011, 3:15 AM
By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal

The Jersey City woman whose South African Boerboels have been involved in several vicious attacks on individuals is being arraigned today on the charge of criminal contempt.

After a series of attacks in 2009, Jersey City officials impounded the dogs under the state?s Vicious Dog Law and they faced being euthanized.

Susan Kolb, 60, of Sheffield Street, went to trial to defend the dogs, and as part of an agreement reached with the city on May 15, 2009, she promised in court to remove them from the jurisdiction.

Just another mundane status hearing, it turns out, and it wasn't even newsworthy. No future court dates set as of yet. Still, this story must not die... that woman really needs to be punished for defying the previous court order. If only Arnold Diaz could pay her a visit.

The next hearing is schedule for May 6 (tomorrow), before Judge Nesle Rodriguez, I believe.

I've called Judge Callahan's chambers, because he is the judge that is supposedly assigned to this case, whereas Judge Rodriguez is hearing pre-trial motions (I think) but they never seem to have any real information about the case. Its so frustrating. I don't know exactly where www.nj.com gets its information about the case but I guess they are able to go down to the courthouse and see everything.
