With Clear, you are at best only going to get 6mb download and 1-2 mb upload. With Comcast performance I get around 20 Mb download an 4-6 Mb upload for about the same price. Clear isn't worth it unless you travel a lot. I slashed my Comcast services to get my bill under $100/month. Note I stuck with the comcast DVR - it's better/less expensive than the Tivo equivalent. I also picked up their 2 free digital tuners. That way I get to record all regular tv. I also got a Roku for Netflix for $8/month. If you are going OTA, the Magnavox is a decent choice - but its like going back to a VCR compared to Tivo.

I also keep my bill low by shouting down the phone at them when they mess around with my service. "Cancel my account I'm going with Fios/Dtv/OTA" works wonders with their customer service.

I don't have Tivo now; I have a DVR from Comcast which is pretty lousy. Tivo seems to do everything I want it to though, and the price is reasonable. I also have a Mac.

The choices for antennas are overwhelming and the information available on the internet, while voluminous, is too technical for me. I feel like, just tell me what the heck to buy! -)

I suppose an option is to get basic cable without a box along with Tivo if an antenna doesn't work.

Do you already have the Tivo? If not, using a PC as a PVR with Windows Media Center, or other software (I use Snapstream) gives you more flexibility, like streaming Netflix or Hulu. That Clear service's $45 bandwidth seems capable of it. That's a deal compared to Comcast's $59 or FIOS's $75 for broadband alone.

As for OTA, give it a try, you never know, it really depends. I have a giant brick school dead east of me, but a roof antenna gets me good reception even though the school is still blocking it. But ground floor inside my brick building was missing a few network channels. I seem to recall reading the powered antennas were mostly BS.

Help a newbie please! I'm ready to drop evil Comcast. I'm not good at this stuff, but the best I can determine is to go with an OTA antenna plus Tivo. I want DVR, hence Tivo.

As for an antenna, my apt. faces west, opposite NYC. I'm told an amplified antenna is best, but which one? Or do you think I'm out of luck since my apt. faces west?

I have my internet connection with comcast. The connection is fast and generally reliable, but I want to be rid of them. Besides, it's expensive. I'm thinking of Clear, which is a 4g connection. I won't consider using Verizon DSL again and FIOS is not available for me.

Any thoughts and recommendations would be most appreciated.

Since I'm in an Apt, The fios guys came and took the wire from the outside and drilled a hole into the wall, (just like Comcast) and put up a Fios terminal. Its two small boxes which Doesn't take up much space.

Doesn't FIOS require them to put a big box on the wall in a closet or something? Or is that only if your building isn't wired for FIOS? I pay about $125 for phone, Internet, and cable on Comcast with a lot of channels-- but a lot of channels I don't watch. And that was after bargaining down.

I have to say, even though the Comcast phone people are annoying, the service people who come to your house are very friendly and tend to know what they're doing.

It depends on the building. If your entire building was made FIOS ready, then your setup is relatively easy, providing that you're not going to be moving equipment to other locations in your house requiring re-wiring. Verizon told me to expect a four hour install. Was closer to two hours for everything. AND they showed up on time and the tech was very helpful in explaining the equipment.

So $115 is cable + internet + phone? All via FIOS?

How was the install process? Was it easy? I live in a condo appt, is it a pain to get FIOS setup? I've heard some horror stories...

I think the $3 difference may be that I elected to have a non-puplished number. I'll never understand why it costs more to not publish something but that's the way it is.

I have Comcast internet only. The tv is hooked to roku for netflix films/documentaries, and to a netbook controlled from the phone via airmouse for hulu/others eg watchvfree.net.

Some friends of mine switched to fios, internet only, and I am thinking of doing the same. Apparently verizon can plug their system on a house coaxial network. My friends have an HD antenna and a minimac with wireless keyboard to get hulu/others.

Fios ensures one doesn't share the network with a voracious roku neighbor.

You can search by title on Apple TV, it's just a little obnoxious because you have to type the title in by using the apple tv remote by moving it over the letters presented on the TV screen.

However, you can also surf Netflix on your lap top, put something in your queue and it readily appears on Netflix on the tv. So there's no real advance planning involved.

I'm happy enough with the wii streaming and I just watch hulu on the laptop. Heard good things about the roku but havent necessarily needed one yet.

I'm another ex-cabler. As I don't have a bigscreen yet, my biggest complaint with Netflix through the Wii is the show browsing is SOOO much lamer than on a web browser. You can only search by title, and the whole categories thing is unavailable. It's a pain to have to plan ahead enough to fill the instant queue using a PC interface. My mom says it's the same on her new AppleTV. Hopefully they'll improve the interfaces for these devices soon. Maybe when I get a 42" screen I'll just use the HTPC browser and forget about the Wii.

I cancelled Comcast cable TV to go with Apple TV and an HD Antenna. I get all of the basic tv channels plus a few others with my HD Antenna, and Netflix through Apple TV and have the option to pay per drink for HD movies and tv programs. I sort of wish I went the Roku box route to get Hulu. But it's fine as it is.

When I called Comcast to cancel Cable TV the Comcast rep told me I should have asked for the retention group to get a better plan. But even when they reduce your plan it's only for a temporary period.

I'm glad i cut the cord and got rid of cable. I like better being able to decide what I want to watch. Of course eventually prices of Netflix or internet will increase sooner than later as more people cut the cord.

We just bought the Roku XDS to stream Netflix/Hulu/Amazon and HD content looks very close if not identical to Comcast HD. We did find it helpful to upgrade our wireless router to a dual band wireless-N to ensure that content was served as HD as much as possible - before we did that we would get dropped down to medium quality and the difference was very noticeable but still watchable for most kinds of content. If you can run an ethernet cable directly into the Roku or whatever device you use to stream obviously that would be the ideal. All in all we're really happy with the Roku.

What do you use to stream Netflix and Hulu? How does the picture look? I've been wondering how it would look on my 50" plasma.

We have a 32" LCD and use wii and xbox, or plug the laptop straight into the tv with just an hdmi cable, but they now make blu ray players and other devices you can stream content directly through. whichever way you do it it's very seamless.

Verizon DSL is spotty downtown because the CO is in the Heights. Clear 4G has Jersey City covered pretty well. We've been using it for about a month and is much happier with it than Verizon DSL.

Has anyone here on the western slope put an antenna on their roof for the o.t.a. stations? Any success with the reception?

Comcast's pricing just went up, for everything, even the modem rental. I called and complained and was able to get about $22 knocked off my bill for the next 12 months. Not great, but not too shabby.

I have no use for cable TV and their extortionist pricing.

I get free OTA HD channels with an indoor antenna, and if I really need to see a particular show (which is infrequent) I will download it.

I get $29.99/mo Verizon DSL internet and am quite happy.

YMMV.

i have the same comcast plan and pay 90. if you threaten to leave, you should be able to bargain them down. if you still want cable that is.

I'm currently paying $130 for Comcast digital preferred + internet. I live around VVP.

Do I have options for switching to a cheaper vendor, like FIOS? I just think $130 is too much to ask for...

TIA.
