As others have said, the decision to devein shrimp is basically a matter of aesthetics. Not a health issue by any means. The little ones--such as those you find in shrimp salad are never deveined.

I bet the OP goes to crab fests and gets all icked out when there are lungs and eggs and other things inside the crabs. ICK!

Hooray! Eating shrimp poo - what a nice surprise! Of course if it's gulf shrimp, you're doubly funked cuz you'll probably get some of those nice carcinogenic oil by-products in there as well. Bon Apetite!

Your getting two meals for the price of one. And the second one is a surprise. Consider yourself lucky.

On a good business? Are you out of your head? Any place too lazy to even clean the sh!t out of their shrimp is a dumpster fire I wouldn't ever crawl into. Feel free to eat your dirt and decaying bits of plant and animal in your meal, I'll be spending my money and time at places that don't include that crap on my plate. I'll also certainly spend free time bashing a place as crappy as that to anyone who will read.

Thanks for NOT answering my very clear question:

"Can you quote a health regulation that supports your claim?

Did you measure the shrimp? Size?

Just the facts, please."

Hooters sells shrimp around that size, that are peel and eat. So those haven't been de veined. Yes some haven't finished digesting their last meal. Its more of a taste and aesthetic issue. If those shrimp were fried and breaded you probably wouldn't have noticed.

Does anyone own a shrimp devainer ? I have one it looks like an old fountain pen without the feather. Long, curved, and pointy on one end. It is really simple and easy to use but can be a bit time consuming if you have a lot. It is just one quick poke, push, and pop under the shell, it takes it all off. Once done either boil water with a side of shrimp cocktail or coat the shrimp in bread crumbs heat up some oil in a pan and fry for a few minutes. Better than ordering from a stinky place like that.

I love shrimp but that picture is disgusting. It literally takes seconds to clean a shrimp. That's just lazy and shows disregard for the product that you're producing.

Seriously? It's still pretty nasty.

If their goal is to create a satisfying and pleasing eating experience and build a loyal customer base, this is decidedly a fail. I can only assume that they just want to make a quick buck by serving up whatever they can convince people to buy.

as long as you cook a shrimp thoroughly, it's not necessary to de-vein it. Stop being a baby. For large shrimp, yeah it looks a bit weird and sometimes it can taste off, but there's no health reasons.

Still, they should just buy shrimp that have already been deveined, so satisfy the weak-willed.

While you're on the subject of tunnel vision, it's still not a health issue.

Thanks for completely missing the point and not realizing it is both a health and aesthetic issue. Good job on whatever tunnel vision you possess that allows you to read one line while completely ignoring the next.

And yeah, dude, I tend agree with ianmmac - go wash your hands about 15 times, and stop projecting your paranoia on a good business.

Eh, yeah, it doesn't look pretty and it can add gritty sand to the texture, but its perfectly fine to eat. I think really what you should be saying is: "Don't eat here if you want your shrimp deveined," not hurling wild accusations about the restaurant. Anyway, stop wasting your time on the internet and go wipe of your countertop with a clorox wipe.

The black stuff is the contents of the intestine and not the intestine itself... There are several reasons for removing the intestine, the most obvious being the aesthetic appearance... In addition, the shrimp's colon and its contents can impart a disagreeable taste and gritty texture to the meat or dish.

What is that grit? Dirt, mostly. If you've ever had occasion to chew on something with even one grain of sand, you know that the grain feels like a pebble in your mouth. Generally speaking, however, you'll find decayed vegetation and decomposing bits of dead animal.

That's a health reason, all right.

Thanks for arguing against yourself.

So I ordered from Big Easy seafood up on Communipaw, and to my nauseating surprise, they didn't clean their shrimp from my grilled shrimp sandwich. I'll upload a picture later if anyone wants, but fully half the shrimp still had the feces attached.

Upon calling them, I was told I would have to bring the food in myself as they wouldn't send the driver back out. They also claimed they don't have to clean the shrimp, which is incorrect for shrimp of that size. I'll be filing a complaint over at the Health & Human Services Dept. on Monday, but in the meantime, do yourselves a favor and don't bother eating at this place.
