You call Risk Management they handle insurance claims for the city. (201) 547-5034. They usually send out a ton of checks every month due to all the pot holes out there. It would be wise to photograph and note the date, time, and weather conditions of the damage incident.

This city is managed so poorly. When will the people start demanding things get done. I still cant believe they started removing some of the snow. I have never seen potholes like this in my life.

just drilled one of those this morning on Monmouth b/t Wayne and CC. Will go photograph/send to the city. there's one pothole that is so wide that you can't really avoid it with both sides.

Drive very slowly or you will bend the hell out of your wheels...

How do we get the city to repair the potholes before the Spring?
Chirstopher Columbus Drive between Monmouth and Varick is so bad that it's undrivable. This is just one of many roads in terrible condition - it was bad before the snow, and they never repaired the potholes from last year.

to penalize all the residents and non-speeders by keeping Columbus a warzone is ridiculous. If speeding is a problem, station cops with radar on Columbus. A few months of that and people will alter their driving speed accordingly.

All I do for the most part is cross Columbus and those 30 feet require prayer and crossed fingers.

I'm going to pursue reimbursement for my two tires, we'll see...

I agree with what someone posted at a similar thread. The speed limit on the smaller, one lane streets should be 20mph. I would love to see some of those speed bumps like Hoboken has installed. Rumble-strips are useless and not well thought out as they disturb the home-owners who live near them. Potholes suck but they are our temporary speed bumps on the side streets and CC Ave.

First thing first: Slow down! It's hard to hit a pothole big enough to do damage if you are driving the appropriate speed (25MPH for most areas of Jersey City.) At that speed, you have a better chance of avoiding road hazards and if you do hit one it won't be as bad for your tires as if you're driving 40. Obviously this advice is more for residential sections than highway driving.

Second: Make sure your tires are properly inflated. An under-inflated tire is much more likely to take sidewall damage from hitting a pothole. At least one of the gas stations at the Holland Tunnel approach has a free air dispenser (I believe it's the BP on 12th.) Take advantage and make sure you're at the proper pressure.

Third: Get Road Hazard insurance when you buy your tires. I buy all my tires from www.tirerack.com and I always add the extra insurance. It does take a little paperwork and can add a day before you get your new rubber, but I have had several tires replaced for free (minus the cost of the insurance, obviously) by Tire Rack due to sidewall bubbles from potholes. In the long run, even with the premiums, it's saved me hundreds of dollars.

Say what you will about Jersey City roads, but I've ruined a number of tires over the years driving on Route 78 through "nice" towns like like Maplewood and Watchung. It's tough to avoid a nasty pothole at 65mph on the highway. Just one of the perks of owning a car!

the bottom of my beetle is pulverized. i had to buy a steel skid plate for the bottom of my car after replacing the stock one 3x in the past 5 years. to top it off, when the last plastic skid plate fell off, i ripped my fan belt and broke a rear strut and a front axle on various potholes. the ones on manilla coming from 139 are awful.

I can say from experience this site works.

I had what could be described as a small sink hole in front of my old house on 7th. reported through this site and JC had a crew repaving it 2 days later. they didn't fix the problem, because the hole just came back, but the bandaid helped

They did ask for pics, I'm not sure if it's required. If you have the exact location I'm sure they would send someone out there to check it out, if they even go out of their way to do that. Just call them and inquire.

The potholes are our only defense against speeders. They paved Coles Street between JC and Hoboken and now cars hit the residential area doing 45-50mph.

Thank you all for confirming what I've suspected every time I've seen "low profile" tires here: that it's a completely stupid idea for city driving. Maybe in LA, but not for snowbelt always dug up old northeast cities.

I'm a self-proclaimed pothole magnet. Since my purchase of a car with low profile tires in 2006, I've gone through 5 tires and 1 rim from potholes.

There's a ton of them on 1&9 from Jersey City through Elizabeth.

Does the dept. of Public Works require pictures as evidence of the pothole? I one on Pulaski Skyway and I have no idea how I'd get a picture of that one without causing a traffic jam and/or risk getting demolished by another car.

I was reimbursed by the city when I had a bubble in my tire due to hitting a huge pothole on columbus drive. I took pics of the pothole and the damage and gave them a receipt. I contacted the department of public works and I had to go to city hall to pick up the paperwork.

Dear Jersey City,

Your roads are killing my car. Everywhere I drive, there are potholes that eat my tires, rims and shocks. Christopher Columbus is sooooo out of control that it is beyond a speed bump, you can barely drive down it. And it is also deceiving because you get off the ramp to head down town and the road it all smooth and nice and then WHAM! You are right in front of Dixon Mills and every curse word has slipped out of your mouth. All of Jersey City is in need of some lovely road repair. I know last summer Jersey Ave was repaved, which was not in bad condition compared to other parts. Any word on fixing other roads? Or a tax rebate so that we can get some new shocks?

Low profile tires are especially susceptible from what I'm told. I had an old truck for years and never had this issue.

Now I've got a nicer/newer car with 235/45 R17 tires and they clearly aren't meant for the 3rd world driving conditions around here.

Nother regressive tax compliments of JC...

porkchopsoda's advice is heed worthy.

Montgomery blew my wife's low profile tires out. Lucky the rim didn't get bent. Even without wheel replacement/hammering out, the tire cost was through the roof.

Funny, I always thought of SUVs and dirtbikes in the urban areas as excessive, but when you're driving over Moon Patrol territory, they're quite practical.

Good luck on those sidewall pimples.

I typically buy the optional road hazard warranty when i get tires. It covers stuff like that.

Anyone else having problems with tire blisters due to the abundance of meteor sized potholes?

I discoverd blisters on both driver side tires and will have to get them replaced. I drive less than 2000 miles a year, so no I'm not pleased. I'm convinced these are compliments of Chris Columbus Drive.

Curious if people bother to insure against this sort of thing, I'm told there are options out there.
