Jersey City woman tells police 2 scammers lured her into car in Heights, then snatched money and jewelry and before pushing her out and fleeing

Saturday, June 26, 2010

A 31-year-old Jersey City woman was threatened with a gun and robbed of $1,000 worth of cash and jewelry on Thursday after falling victim to a street scam, reports said.

After withdrawing $700 from the Bank of America on Zabriskie Street, the woman was approached by a man in his 60s and a middle-aged woman wearing a flowery summer dress, reports said.

The victim initially told police that she was pulled into a Jeep by the couple after buying a bottle of water for the woman, who said she wasn't feeling well. Once in the car, the victim said, the woman grabbed her purse and stole the money and gold jewelry, reports said.

When questioned further by police, the woman admitted she had been deceived by the man and woman, who said they had a winning lottery ticket and offered $1,000 if she "helped them out," reports said.

The victim stated that as she got into the vehicle, she became scared upon realizing the man had a gun. When the victim refused to go to North Bergen with the two, the man and woman took the money and jewelry by force, reports said.

The woman was pushed out of the vehicle, which fled on Congress Street, police said.

The woman said she would be able to identify the pair, although no arrests were made, reports indicate.
