We wouldn't need to raise taxes or lay off teachers, fireman, cops, etc. in this state if we did something about GRAFT. For the amount of money New Jerseyans pay in taxes, we could pay teachers and cops as much as CEO's.

I like the suggestions for raising revenues. Here's mine: tax food based on calories/portion. For those of you who hate Christie, this would be a good one.

This is sad but so typically American. I guess Christie doesn't care about the long term damage/issues as long as he doesn't raise taxes because if he raises taxes the world will end. Why not have an emergency tax. Surely if one can spend $200 for dinner, an extra $5 is not gonna kill me.

Why not raise gas, tobacco and alcohol taxes?

What percentage of New Jerseyans do you think spent $200 dollars for dinner in the past year?

Why not raise filming fees, road tolls, make more road have tolls, hunting licenses, create a new lottery, tax soda and candy, up all sales taxes?

Or maybe better yet, get rid of some of the higher up, ineffective, proven to fail Education Suits.

how about lowering speed limits and increasing fines or yearly pet registrations.

Oh, this is wonderful. Get rid of the people who are teaching our children and protect them every day while we work. Sounds like a well thought out plan by someone who has a mandate for "change". Can the City Council be next starting with Rivera?

great, get rid of people involved with the education of our kids so save a buck, so we can pay more to our cops which are the highest paid in the nation.

Jersey City will fire 375 school employees; 114 more will retire

By The Jersey Journal
May 17, 2010, 1:55PM

Jersey City will hand out 375 pink slips to school employees at the end of June after the $29 million cut in the state aid.

The employees that will lose their jobs are 207 non-tenured teachers, 21 tenured teachers, 73 instructional employees, including teaching assistants, and 74 non-instructional employees, including clerks and maintenance workers, district spokeswoman Paula Christen said.

On top of the lay offs, 100 instructional employees and 14 administrators have put in for retirement this year.

Jersey City Education Association President Tom Favia is hopeful retirements will allow the district to rehire some of the laid-off employees.

"The first people to go shouldn't be people in the classroom dealing with children," Favia said. "Cuts should come from somewhere else."
