Sad that this cop is losing his job and years of his life over a hootchie girlfriend. Too bad his emotions got the best of him. He should have called the police on her and the other man for indecent exposure.

I heard something similar happen over on webster ave, but it was a corrections officer (not a police office by the way), and he was upset over a delivery guy pulling too close to his minivan. Pulled a gun that he wasnt supposed to have on him (he wasnt going to or from work), hit the guy for being too close, and when it went to court, all charges were dropped. I heard there were witnesses that testified, and apparently it is ok as this was his 3rd offense. My question is, how did he make it past 1 with his job? It is bad enough with the regular local thugs, but when the powers that be start acting like the thugs why are we paying the tax increase and the re-val? Hmmm...

Jersey City cop sentenced to prison for '08 assault on girlfriend; leaving child alone

Saturday, May 01, 2010

A Jersey City police officer will serve up to five years in prison for assaulting the mother of his child and endangering the 15-month-old girl even though his girlfriend testified at trial that she lied about the incident to police.

Yesterday the girlfriend, Stacy Stackow, tearfully pleaded for leniency before Officer Juan Torres, 29, was sentenced to 3 to 5 five years in prison and led away in handcuffs from the courtroom of Superior Court Judge Fred Theemling.

Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Pete Stoma said he would file paperwork requiring Torres to give up his position on the police department and Theemling said he would sign the order.

On the night of the crime in December 2008 Stackow did not come home for several hours after getting off work. Torres left their 15-month-old child home alone, went to his girlfriend's workplace and found her in a compromising position in a car with another man, officials said. When the officer opened the car door, the man took off running and Stackow went home, officials said.

But Torres stopped at a "couple of bars" before returning to the couple's Lembeck Avenue home about 4 a.m. and that's when the assault occurred, said Stoma, adding the victim did not suffer any significant injuries.

The jury convicted Torres even though Stackow testified at the trial that she instigated the attack and Torres did nothing more than defend himself. She also said that he was not armed during the incident.

Torres also took the stand during his trial, but the jury convicted him on the charges of possessing his service weapon for an unlawful purpose, simple assault and endangering the welfare of his 15-month-old child.

Stackow originally said he had pointed his service weapon at her and pushed it against her several times while she had their daughter in her arms.

Prior to the sentencing Stoma told Theemling that "We are here today solely because of Juan Torres' inability to control his anger in a situation that did not warrant his criminal behavior. . This is truly a tragic set of circumstance, but the tragedy belongs to Juan Torres and he must pay the price."

Torres was facing significantly more time. His lawyer, John Young, said he will be filing an appeal immediately and asked that Torres be allowed to remain free on bail pending the outcome.

Stoma objected, saying "It's time for Mr. Torres to serve his time," and Theemling agreed.

Torres, who has been free on bail since the day after his arrest, was led from court in handcuffs by Hudson County sheriff's officer and taken to jail.

Jersey City cop who beat wife faces up to 10 years in prison

By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal
April 26, 2010, 6:11PM

A Jersey City cop faces up to 10 years in prison and the loss of his job when sentenced Friday for domestic violence triggered when his wife did not return home from work and he then found her in a parked car with a man in Bayonne, officials said.

On March 12 a jury convicted Officer Juan Torres Jr., 29, of Jersey City, on charges including multiple counts of domestic violence, possession of his service weapon for an unlawful purpose, and endangering the welfare of the couple's 18-month-old child.

On the night of the crime in December 2008 the victim did not come home for several hours after getting off work. Torres left their 18-month-child home alone, went to his wife's workplace, and found her in the car, officials said. When the officer opened the car door, the man she was with took off running and the victim went home, officials said.

But Torres stopped at a "couple of bars" before returning to the couple's Lembeck Avenue home about 4 a.m. and that's when the assault occurred, said Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Pete Stoma, adding the victim did not suffer significant injuries.

The jury convicted Torres even though the victim changed her story and testified at trial that Torres assaulted her in self-defense, Stoma said. Torres was convicted of possessing his service weapon for an unlawful purpose, simple assault and endangering the welfare of his 18-month-old child.

The weapons offense carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison and Torres will face a minimum of 3 to 5 years behind bars before becoming eligible for parole, officials said.
Torres' lawyer, John Young of Jersey City, has filed motions seeking a judgment of acquittal on the weapons charge and the endangering charge and oral arguments on the motions are expected to be heard at Friday's hearing

Torres will be sentenced at 9 a.m. by Judge Fred J. Theemling Jr. in the Hudson County Administration Building on Newark Avenue in Jersey City. Torres is also expected to be stripped of his badge by DePascale.

Say cop pulled gun in home dispute

Tuesday, December 16, 2008

A Jersey City police officer has been suspended without pay after allegedly pulling a gun on his girlfriend Friday night, officials said.

Juan Torres, 28, of Jersey City, apparently went to the girlfriend's Bayonne workplace and caught her in a parked car with another man, persons familiar with the case said.

When Torres opened the door, the man took off running and the girlfriend went home to Jersey City, where she lives with the officer, sources said.

Later that night, Torres returned home and there was an altercation between the couple, during which he allegedly pulled her hair and pointed his gun at her, sources said.

The five-year veteran of the department made his first appearance in court yesterday via video link from Hudson County jail in Kearny and his bail was set at $50,000 cash or bond.

He was represented in court by Jersey City attorney John Young.

Torres had not been able to post bail as of 5 p.m. yesterday.

Jersey City spokesman Stan Eason said Torres has been relieved of his service weapon and will remain suspended without pay pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.
