No one black listed Teacher, and Teacher just did not express his or her opinion. To the contrary, teacher was caustic and insulting without supporting the basis for his/her opinion. Then when it became apparent the rest of us were expecting a more intelligent response, Teacher huffed, took her marbles and left.

He said he is off this site forever, moving out of the country, going to live with the Pope. Lets him be. I don't believe any of it, life is not that fair.

Teacher, you seem to have a pretty strong "categorizing" view of the world. How does it work ? Does it make you feel better to look down on other groups ? I also detect anger. Why is that ? Wouldn't it be because what you want to believe in and the reality around you are different ? Did something (or someone) make you feel this way ? Finally, if you are really a Teacher, why are you running away ? Teachers always look for materials for their students. Students are the ones more likely to be running away...

It doesn't matter if you agree with me or not. I am telling you a fact. The Archdiocese of NY is 1011 First Street. Perhaps they will share this data.I believe the year was 1989, I am not sure. However, there was an increase of students. Research the facts. By the way, the majority of the teachers had Masters degrees and our students passed the NY State standards with high numbers higher than the public schools.
Why do you think Vermont reversed its gay law? They were afraid of what was happening in the state of Mass. Some parents tried to remove their children from classes which taught an alternative lifestyle but they couldn't. It gave parents in Vermont a motive to reverse.

Characterizing the parents who took their children out of NYC public schools as "liberal" for purely shock value isn't a "fact" Yvonne.

Nor is your completely bogus assertion about the motivations behind events that actually didn't happen in Vermont.

Ultimately, marriage equality is not about any moral or religious dogma. No one is forcing anyone into a same sex marriage, just as no one is compelled to join an opposite sex marriage. But as long as marriage includes specific legal benefits and married spouses enjoy specific legal standing, then achieving equality under the law mandates a state blind to sexuality, gender and orientation. The only valid reason for same sex couples to be denied a marriage license issued by the state is because the state has ceased issuing marriage licenses.

Teacher, you seem to suggest that life was easier in the past when rules were simpler for folks to follow. What you forget is that plenty of people were denied basic rights at the time, with the few people in power keeping a tight leach on people representation of the world - shall I mention Galileo ? This is what is going on right now again. On one side, the projection of "these people" behaviors, on the other the reality of plenty of them who have been asked to join the communal table in many states and countries. In these states, the majority has learnt to know them, and to see their commonality. The world has not collapsed (which btw is a pretty good argument for God looking benevolently on this). People have realized that the unknown is actually pretty known and that there is no reason to be afraid. But to do that, they had to first make the conscious effort to accept that they might not know everything, which is an impossible task for the brain to do. It was not the easy path but many started it, often out of their own troubled history or the place they came from. Many refused at first to look at ?these people?, because half-truths were easier to model the world and guide their behaviors. Eventually the majority realized that it is easier to include the ?others? in their vision of the world. In the process, they learnt a lot about controlling their own mind instead or leaving it to others ? or I would hope so.

Teacher, you can try to keep to your projections and embellishments of the past (that is what nostalgia is all about which btw is also a way not to ask too many questions), or you can look at this magnificent and scary world and see the many people looking at the many same things you take for granted. Many of them you know already, many more you might gain as friends and neighbors.

Btw, I was raised Catholic too...

That position is the subject of considerable legal academic work, and has a fair share of support in the legal community. I doubt it will ever gain popular support, as that option, while probably the most legally sound position, actually does take something away from "married" opposite-sex couples who otherwise are not impacted one way or another by whether same-sex couples are married or civilly united or domestically partnered.

Telling the majority of people that the state no longer considers them "married" would be a pretty unpopular thing to do.

Right, because most politicians don't care about rights or doing the right thing, but rather, saving their butts come election time.

How does granting gays the right to marry kill this country and or cost employers more money?

Also, what percentage of Roman Catholic priests do you think are gay?

Yvonne, I don't disagree with what may have happened in 1989 in New York. I just disagree with you on what will happen here, now. It's 20 years later than the New York incident you cite. There are way fewer sisters in the good teaching orders from that time past which attracted people to the Catholic schools.

If I had a kid who could go to either Stuyvesant or Regis, I would definitely go with Stuyvesant and I would imagine most parents would as well.

Your claim that any of these schools are actually "teaching" alternative lifestyles is absurd. There may be an occasional mention of same sex parents, but "teaching" is a gross distortion and laughable.

I can't agree with you. Catholic schools have had a very difficult time attracting good teachers. Anecdotally, it seems younger parents are more open to the gay issue. Consequently, they may be more likely to place more emphasis on better teachers than distorted concerns about recruitment into a particular lifestyle. Additionally, I don't know how many younger parents want their children indoctrinated in the Catholic religion early on. Quote:

Apparently liberal parents did not want their children told about an alternative lifestyle.
Jersey City Catholic Schools have been closing since charter schools opened. The passage of this bill will bring back Catholic Schools.
By the way, the Board of Ed in NY cut "My Two Mommies" from the curriculum after parents stormed the meetings.

I'm sure you're not the only person in JC who opposes same sex marriage. But I was wondering whether you would explain why you oppose it? Also, explain why you support civil unions but NOT marriage for same sex couples.

I agree that the State shouldn't be involved in the marriage business. As do a number of legal scholars. But it is. And it's going to be for a long, long time. And so long as the State is in this business, people will fight for this business to treat equally all people who wish to receive the benefits and accept the responsibilities of civil marriage. Regardless of their race, creed, sexual orientation, intention to have or not have children, etc.

Right. And I never said otherwise. I was just illustrating what the best case scenario for everyone (but government) would be.

Again, if the state is going to monopolize marriage licenses, then they should grant the freedom for gays to marry as well. Pointing out an inconsistency is not minimizing the effort since I support the stance. It still is an inconsistency, though.

If anything, legal same sex marriages will help reduce the state's deficit. Think of all the sales tax collected on wedding flowers, marriage ceremonies, catering halls, photographers, tuxedo rentals, bridesmaid dresses, wedding registries, ect.ect. ect.

But that's not really the point.

The point is we need to do away with creating second class citizens. The law should be gender blind just as it is racially blind.
