"The Elegance of the Hedgehog" by Muriel Barbery is the best novel I've read in a while. Loved it.

And a big high five to everyone who recommended "Three Cups of Tea" by Greg Mortensen. That book is fantastic.

"Freedom: Creedos From The Road" by Ralph Sonny Barger.

An interesting little book that explores the concept of freedom and what it means to be free.

The author does admit not recommending "living your life the Sonny Barger way".

The Wind Up Bird Chronicles by Haruki Mirakami. Very nonlinear, experimental unusual book. I would also recommend Platform by Michel Houellebecq

Just finished Rona Jaffe's 'The Best of Everything' ... a great, guilty pleasure read about five women working at a New York publishing house back in the mid-50's. The other side of Mad Men.

Edmund White's latest book, City Boy got a good review in the New York Times last Sunday. I read several of his other books including The Farewell Symphony, My Lives, The Married Man and Hotel Deville - all very good.

I typically tend to throw or give away my books soon after reading them to prevent clutter build up.

In the latest pile of to be thrown away is The Sixteen Pleasures, but Robert Hellenga which I read while on vacation in Italy about 3 years ago.

I'll probably be dropping this off with the rest of the pile off at Grace Van Vorst tomorrow or next week. There's a bunch I have sitting under my stairs for disposal.

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova.

The Historian has been described as a combination of genres, including Gothic novel, adventure novel, detective fiction, travelogue, postmodern historical novel, epistolary epic, and historical thriller.

Excellent read.

Something about the Internet brings out the Kurt Vonnegut people. I read a bunch of them in my early twenties but I can?t remember a thing about them. But I assure you I read novels all the time and after all these years the only novel I could recommend to anyone, without knowing their reading tastes or what makes them tick, the only novel I could recommend to anyone is A prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. Anyone could read this novel and love it and never want it to end. If I knew more about the person I could tailor the recommendation more. Don?t get me started I am a book over that loves to talk about books.

If you like Freakonomics, you should check out Gang Leader For a Day by Sudhir Venkatesh. I'd also recommend it for any fans of the Wire.

His U of C research study was covered in the Freakonomics chapter on why drug dealers still live with their mothers. The book expands on his work at U of C and elaborates on gang life in the 90s in Chicago.

It was a really quick read for me.

I like Freakonomics, just pre-ordered Superfreakonomics by the same authors.

I also read The Undercover Economist and The Logic of Life, both by Tim Harford. And ordered Dear Undercover Economist by him.

These are fun read!

I would say anything by Kurt Vonnegut (a real sci fi writer) and if you are looking for non-fiction, you can't go wrong with "The Devil In The White City"

"Deer Hunting with Jesus" by Joe Bageant.

Obama must have studied it just prior to "Bittergate". Laugh, cry, be outraged, and touched, all at the same time.

Just finished Duma Key by Stephen King - which was pretty good - and I read it on my Kindle. I so love this thing. Books are mostly $9.99 at Kindle store on Amazon - they have more than 100,000 titles.

You order the book on the web or on the Kindle and it wirelessly downloads the whole book in 30-45 seconds. It's light to carry, you can change the font in a blink if you forget your reading glasses, and it has a perfectly functional web browser (free web access at least for now).

I read "Drown" a while back, maybe as much as ten years? I recall enjoying it but my aging brain can't remember why. I've been intrigued by "Oscar Wao" but have yet to pull the trigger.

otoh, over the last couple of months, I've belatedly discovered the writing of the late W.G. Sebald which is very beautiful.

I recommend, People of the Book, by Geraldine Brooks. It has action, history, mystery, and romance.

Wow a mini-series, that's such a great idea, that way we don't have to watch a rushed, watered down version of such a great book...if only there was a way to let him know =)

Ender was 4 when the book starts...it would be interesting to see how children can handle the roles. I actually saw Orson Scott Card at a book signing at B&N a few years ago and he talked about the script them. I can't imagine doing the whole book in a two hour movie. Maybe a mini series on Sci Fi channel or something.

Trying to read 'Enders Game'. Pretty good so far.

Thanks for reminding me, I finished Ender's Game but didn't get to finish the rest of the books in the series, I think I'm going to pick up where I left off at on "Speaker for the Dead"

but first I want to start Stephen King's "The Cell"

Ender's Game is one of my favorite books! I read it the summer before my freshman year in High School (yes, I was one of those dorky sci fi girls). Speaker for the Dead is also very good. I read most of the series, except for the last one, which was pretty bad. His parallel series, which focuses on Bean is also readable, although I did not like it as much as the original.

I really want to read Ender's Shadow because they're going to mix Game & Shadow together to make the movie (even though it'll probably be a flop, I want to see how they pull it off

I can't imagine that they'll make a good movie out of the books. Are they filming? They've been saying that they are going to make a movie out the Ender's Game for years and nothing has even happened.

Well the good thing is that Orson Scott Card is still in control of the script last I heard and he threw out every pitch they came to him with. That's when they decided to mix the 2 stories together to make the movie work, thus making the bond between Ender & Bean more relevant. Again, I doubt it'll be good, but i want to see it nevertheless. They're in pre-production, but no filming has started yet. He still wants kids to be the actors and not the WB style 28 yr old posing as kids...so they're looking for middle ground now.

All we are doing is discussing books we enjoyed reading. I personally don't care who does what with their spare time, nor would I tell someone what to do with the spare time they have. This conversation is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. I'm not trying to be high and mighty because I like to read rather than watch TV. I think we all watch TV, too. Let's just drop it. Now, back to the topic of this thread.....
