How about:

A 90,000 seat beer garden with a Whole Foods on the second floor, an indoor dog-run and a purveyor of all things 'amazing'.

I was thinking a movie theater could fit well in the area. The parking lot does not have to be large. It would create a larger foot traffic presence which can discourage crime. Also maybe we can get a theater that shows movies that do not go into wide release and not be forced to travel to Edgewater or to Manhatten.

FYI, Hollywood video's customer service response is below, seems pretty fair to me. I had asked if i needed to go to another store to return or if there was another method of return.

--begin response--

Thank you for contacting us regarding the DVDs you rented from the closed store in Jersey City.

If mailing the movies in is more convenient for you, you are welcome to mail the to us. The can be sent Media Mail to

Customer Relations
9275 SW Peyton Lane
Wilsonville, OR 97070

Of course, since the store has closed, no Additional Rental Charges would apply in the interim.

If there is anything else we can do for you, please do not hesitate to email us at: E-Mail-Us@hlyw.com.

I think there's a location in Hoboken on Hudson and 13th (more or less). Maybe you could drop them off there, it's at least worth a call before heading out to union city.

I second that...a Whole Foods would be great but I would not hold my breath.

actually, i used to work at a hollywood video (not that particular one) back maybe about 5 years ago. if the systems haven't changed since then, you should be able to just keep your dvds. a store's inventory is local to the computers in a specific store; it isn't fed into a 'master database' spanning the country. that's why if you rent a video at one location (lets say jc) and accidently return it to another location (somewhere in manhattan), they'll probably call you and tell you that you need to pick it up and return it to where you rented it (before its due). since the store is closed, some corporate ppl may dig through the computer system to contact ppl who have dvd's out, telling them how to return their movie. more likely, they'll just scrap the computers and cut their losses (the effort to retreive those dvds is definitely not worth it, seeing as they buy them in bulk for about 5 cents a disc).

at least, that's how it was 5 years ago...

but if you haven't gotten a call by now id just move on with your life.

If you do not return them to Union City, they will likely charge your credit card for the full price of the DVDs. If you do not have a current credit card on file, they will submit the charge to a debt collector to get it from you. If you do not pay, it will show up on your credit report.

Don't think for one moment that there are reasonable human beings working for Hollywood Video. It's all automated.

If they can't even bother to notify you that they will be closing or to give instructions where to return the DVDs, I'd keep them or toss them. I would not feel obliged to schlep to Union City.

I rented a couple of DVDs last week from the Hollywood video on Grand St next to the Pathmark. I went to return them yesterday and they were closed with a sign indicating it was permanent. The sign had a place to reference another location but didn?t. Any idea what happened? I assume it was sudden. If it was expected I would think they might have mentioned they wouldn?t exist by the time the movies were due back! Is the next closest one really in Union City? I have to return these DVDs somewhere I assume?
