I've used both Turbo Tax and HR Block's Tax Cut. I found Turbo Tax more user friendly. I've seen accountants make mistakes that neither package would have - unless one has very complicated issues I think a software package used by millions is the way to go.

I'm pretty sure that there are only 45 state return packages because some of the states don't have an income tax. Hard to believe but true.

We're in the same position. In the turbotax interview you specify where the income was from, it does the rest. Accountants use essentially the same software.

I will say the only time TT gets confusing is the state returns, I guess they don't get the same attention since there's 45 of them. Why only 45 is a good question.

You CAN, but why would you give the IRS an interest free loan for longer than you need to?

If you've planned your advance payments (witholding, estimated taxes) closely enough, the amounts owed to state or federal may be a pittance and 3% of that pittance is even MORE of a pittance.
(At my most lazy, I postponed filing for 3 years but alas it doesn't get any easier. But heck, I could have DIED during that time and really won out, my executor would have been stuck with the work.)

Okay, a proviso...if you need to file for two states you MAY need to be timely to get the writeoff of one state against the other.

I just did mine to be sure I get something back, might not be the case in 2 weeks... This year I paid $30 extra to talk to a Turbotax consultant to confirm something, it was worth it.

If you do that, I would recommend you write your question(s) in advance and as detailed as possible, it will clarify your mind and help speed the process. They also email you the recap of the conversation including know-hows.

I owe Federal but am getting a refund from NJ.

You can bet I'm waiting to pay the IRS until the last minute.

For us, it's the opposite. A refund from NYS and payment to NJ.

You would need to file in both states, but be sure to file NY taxes first - that way, you can deduct the NY taxes from your NJ taxes (for most folks, this means you don't owe any NJ taxes).

BE CAREFUL if you use TurboTax! I did, and either it made a mistake or I got confused, but it didn't credit me - unless I can fix it before 4/15 I will pay taxes all over again to NJ!

Has anyone had this experience themselves? When should I file my amended return?

My husband in I did ours Feb 1st and I didn't get NY return a month later. WE still haven't got his back yet but it is only like 25 bucks so whatever.

I got my federal really quickly, nj took a little longer, and ny takes forever.

On the NYS non-resident tax, you have to fill out your taxable income submitted on the Federal 1040 and then halway through the form you pull out what was earned in the other state if you live in the other state.

Get your refunds in the mail ASAP. Both California and Kansas have issued refund delays of indefinite periods of time due to their fiscal situations. Give NJ's position, that's not out of the realm of possibility.

Good luck finding one that's worth what you pay him, rather than paying a high priced Turbotax data entry clerk. I started doing my own with Turbotax because the high priced acccountant's clerk made stupid mistakes, and was never reviewed properly. With extra forms for rental property and NYS taxes a return can get real expensive.

Once all forms are in from your employer and investment companies along with any reciepts from throughout the year than that is the time to make the appointment with your accountant.
