Arrest made in street robbery try

Friday, January 02, 2009

Police have arrested a Jersey City man who they said struck a woman on the back of the head, possibly with a stun gun, during an apparent robbery attempt.

A 28-year-old Jersey City woman said she was walking on Second Street near Colgate Street Monday at about 6 a.m. when she felt something hit the back of her head, reports said. She believed it was a stun gun, according to the report.

A man then stepped in front of her, grabbed her by the arms and started shaking her while making a "stuttering sound," reports said.

The victim pulled a bottle out of her bag and hit the man, who let go of her and ran away, reports said.

On Tuesday, Luis O. Perez, 41, of Jersey City, was arrested and charged with robbery in connection with the incident, reports said.

The original post stated that the victim "screamed" and he "panicked and left the purse on the ground". This and the Police account lead me to believe it was only a robbery.

Great Job that the police got this guy -- but what do they mean by "victim was able to get away from an actor who may have been trying to rob the victim."

No big deal and maybe I'm just being a little dense -- but do they mean it might have been a robbery as oppose to an attempted sex crime - or as oppose to something else altogether? I don't think it is clear.

Many thanks to the Police Department for their quick response and resolution to this extremely unfortunate incident. It is a strong reminder for all of us to remain vigilant this holiday season.

Also, the next Captain's meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 27, 2009, 7:00 p.m. at M.S. 4, everyone is welcome so please stop by in support of your Police Department.

Happy New Year

One of my friends was woken by a woman's scream for help around 5:30am Monday. The neighbors called 911 and two police cars questioned the whitnesses and searched the neighborhood. The attack happened as the woman was about to get into her car on her way to work. She was able to fight him off and alert the neighbors, panicked he left her purse laying on the group. The cops said they were able to find and arrest the man who the woman later identified. Has anyone heard the official word on this? There was another attack on a woman December 27th at Varick and Mercer so I definitely want to encourage everyone to stay extra vigilant, especially when walking alone at night.
